THE THINKER: SOCIAL NETWORKS

La civilización, hoy fragmentada como pocas veces antes en ámbitos separados por ideas políticas, dogmas, creencias religiosas, fanatismos varios y demás, sigue avanzando. Eso no puede discutirse, sobre todo si se piensa en el desarrollo científico –madre de todas las dudas y llave para abrir todas las certezas- y en el arrollador progreso de la tecnología.

Civilization, today fragmented as rarely before into areas separated by political ideas, dogmas, religious beliefs, various fanaticisms and so on, continues to advance. That cannot be discussed, especially if you think about scientific development – ​​the mother of all doubts and the key to unlocking all certainties – and the overwhelming progress of technology.

A decir verdad, ese proceso es el mismo desde hace milenios, aunque, claro, los resultados van teniendo con el conocimiento ampliado distintas consecuencias que van llegando a los habitantes del planeta a una velocidad cada día mayor.

To tell the truth, this process has been the same for millennia, although, of course, the results are having different consequences with expanded knowledge that are reaching the inhabitants of the planet at an increasing speed every day.

Estas expresiones darían, si quien las escribe tuviese capacidad suficiente y tiempo, como para escribir una enciclopedia de la aventura humana y su incierto futuro. No me anima semejante impulso ni creo estar preparado para asumirlo. Pero hay un aspecto del nuevo mundo que se va construyendo ahora a ritmo de carrera, sobre el que quisiera exponer unos argumentos para incitar a la reflexión colectiva.

These expressions would, if the writer had sufficient capacity and time, to write an encyclopedia of the human adventure and its uncertain future. I am not encouraged by such an impulse nor do I think I am prepared to take it on. But there is an aspect of the new world that is now being built at a racing pace, about which I would like to present some arguments to encourage collective reflection.

Entresacando del complejo cosmo tecnológico las llamadas “redes sociales”, me parece posible lograr ese objetivo de que cada vez seamos más los que analicemos el camino que por ellas se transita y su influencia en la vida social.

By removing the so-called “social networks” from the complex technological cosmos, it seems possible to achieve the objective of more and more of us analyzing the path that they take and their influence on social life.

Si uno pretendiera ser irónico, al borde de la grosería, ubicándose como lejano pero atento observador de lo que ocurre, podría decir que hay una enorme mayoría de población, de toda clase social y económica, y de toda calidad intelectual y moral, que anda por la vida como unos robots estúpidos pegados a pantallas de distintos tamaños: las más pequeñas de los celulares, que permiten fijar la atención en ella mientras se camina tropezando con los demás, mientras se conduce y se pasan semáforos en rojo y se precipitan accidentes de tránsito o se cruza la calle sin advertir el maremoto vehicular que se viene encima; y las más grandes, generalmente asociadas a las variadas computadoras instaladas en cada casa, cuya consecuencia más relevante es que se patea a un costado –literalmente- todo lo que ocurra alrededor mientras los globos oculares aceleran su desgaste y el cerebro concentra todas sus posibilidades en un sola cosa: los entrecruzamientos supuestamente divertidos, los insultos, las amenazas, las pretensiones intelectuales dignas de letras de murgas del carnaval y, al fin, la certificación de un aumento de la presión arterial, de la ansiedad patológica, de la excitación y de una sensación que deja las manos al final quietas pero como garras dispuestas a despertar en cualquier momento.

If one tried to be ironic, on the verge of rudeness, positioning oneself as a distant but attentive observer of what is happening, one could say that there is an enormous majority of the population, of all social and economic classes, and of all intellectual and moral qualities, who walk through life like stupid robots glued to screens of different sizes: the smallest of cell phones, which allow you to focus your attention on it while walking, bumping into others, while driving and passing red lights and precipitating traffic accidents. traffic or crosses the street without noticing the vehicular tidal wave that is coming upon us; and the largest ones, generally associated with the various computers installed in each house, whose most relevant consequence is that everything that happens around is kicked to the side – literally – while the eyeballs accelerate their wear and tear and the brain concentrates all its possibilities on a single thing: the supposedly funny intertwinings, the insults, the threats, the intellectual pretensions worthy of carnival murga lyrics and, finally, the certification of an increase in blood pressure, of pathological anxiety, of excitement and of a sensation that leaves the hands still at the end but like claws ready to wake up at any moment.

Tratemos de reflexionar acerca de lo que ocurre en nuestro universo individual a diario y la mayor parte del tiempo y confesemos si aquí hay exageración o, pobres de nosotros, estamos dibujando la cotidianidad con extrema prolijidad.

Let’s try to reflect on what happens in our individual universe on a daily basis and most of the time and confess if there is an exaggeration here or, poor us, we are drawing everyday life with extreme prolixity.

He ahí, en esas complejas redes sociales, el peor de los males que la sociedad contemporánea está soportando del peso tecnológico.

Therein, in these complex social networks, the worst of the evils that contemporary society is bearing from the technological weight.

Apenas se piensa con serenidad unos minutos, se cae en la cuenta que no es posible sustituir la conversación cara a cara por ese remedo de frases cortas mal escritas, con letras fuera de lugar, faltas de ortografía insultantes y reacciones imprevistas, de niño caprichoso, cerrando un extenso contacto sin que, al final, nadie tenga claro realmente qué idea o información se quiso exponer e imponer, ni cuáles fueron los argumentos en contra que le cayeron como en cascada.

As soon as you think calmly for a few minutes, you realize that it is not possible to replace face-to-face conversation with that imitation of poorly written short sentences, with out-of-place letters, insulting misspellings and unexpected reactions, of a capricious child, closing an extensive contact without, in the end, anyone really being clear about what idea or information they wanted to expose and impose, nor what were the counterarguments that cascaded down.

Elija, lector, el tema que quiera. Y luego imagine cómo dirimiría ese tema con un grupo de amigos o simples conocidos a través de las redes sociales y cuál sería el resultado. Choose, reader, the topic you want. And then imagine how you would resolve that issue with a group of friends or simple acquaintances through social networks and what the result would be. Then do the same with the conversation with four or five friends or acquaintances over coffee and chatting face to face.

Tengo para mí que he sido claro en exponerle mi preocupación y acercarle una serie de elementos sencillos para que usted haga –apague la computadora y encierre el celular en un cajón- el desarrollo de su propio pensamiento sereno sobre el asunto.

I believe that I have been clear in explaining my concern and providing you with a series of simple elements so that you can do – turn off the computer and lock your cell phone in a drawer – to develop your own calm thinking on the matter.

Y algo para el final. Quizás lo parece, pero no soy un fundamentalista. Por eso añado que el punto es el uso que se hace de una determinada tecnología. Ella en particular siempre es buena, porque implica avance, y hasta de las redes sociales se pueden extraer aspectos positivos. No olvide que la tecnología no tiene moral. La cuestión está en usted.

And something for the end. Maybe it seems that way, but I’m not a fundamentalist. That’s why I add that the point is the use made of a certain technology. She in particular is always good, because it implies progress, and even positive aspects can be extracted from social networks. Don’t forget that technology has no morals. The question is up to you.
