Es tiempo de que no nos caiga encima un aforismo de Ernesto Esteban Etchenique, tal como “Intercambiemos ideas, una mía por cuatro tuyas”. O “te regalé flores y me reclamaron el florero”.

It is time for an aphorism by Ernesto Esteban Etchenique not to fall upon us, such as “Let’s exchange ideas, one of mine for four of yours.” Or “I gave you flowers and they claimed the vase.”

Pero no sólo espíritu y actitud serena. También honestidad intelectual.

El gobierno, frente a la crisis que vivimos, está haciendo sus deberes con cierto temblequeo pero también realismo, sin histerias, de tal modo de resolver la compleja construcción de los índices de pobreza y, particularmente, de pobreza infantil, en el contexto de la recuperación paulatina de la economía, que no le puede llevar a cerrar los ojos y dormir.

The government, faced with the crisis we are experiencing, is doing its homework with a certain hesitation but also realism, without hysteria, in such a way as to resolve the complex construction of poverty indices and, particularly, child poverty, in the context of gradual recovery of the economy, which cannot lead you to close your eyes and sleep.

Pero ahora parece que, según la oposición, el sistema usado para construir estos índices no es el adecuado, dejando correr, como chorrito de agua de una canilla, la difusa duda de que podrían ser sujetos de una manipulación que los disminuya.

When the country desperately needs consensus aimed at the ultimate goal of improving situations that no one denies, there is a clear hostility that grows driven by minuscule political interests, by hypocrisy, by cynicism and even by ignorance, like that which certain Spaniards intellectually obscure comments were made about Churchill during the Second World War: -This fat old man is a fool! No se trata de caer en la ingenuidad de pedir unanimidades. Hablo de un clima ahora cruzado por vientos de hostilidad, que amenazan llevarse al diablo lo que Konrad Lorenz llamaría “la función compensatoria de la moral responsable”.

It is not about falling into the naivety of asking for unanimity. I speak of a climate now crossed by winds of hostility, which threaten to destroy what Konrad Lorenz would call “the compensatory function of responsible morality.”

Quizás el lector se sorprenda al saber que esa función, que desalienta los conflictos capaces de arriesgar el futuro colectivo, es común a todas las especies superiores. Por la incidencia del factor moral, inexistente en los animales y presente en los seres humanos, aquellos terminan siendo más “lógicos”, persistentes y efectivos en su conducta compensatoria por el mero instinto, que nunca les falla. A la inversa, hombres y mujeres suelen errar, tropezar o sencillamente ignorar ese esfuerzo constructivo, debido a la debilidad moral, ética, de sus ideas.

The reader may be surprised to learn that this function, which discourages conflicts that could jeopardize the collective future, is common to all higher species. Due to the incidence of the moral factor, non-existent in animals and present in human beings, they end up being more “logical”, persistent and effective in their compensatory behavior due to mere instinct, which never fails them. Conversely, men and women often make mistakes, stumble or simply ignore this constructive effort, due to the moral and ethical weakness of their ideas.

Los más grandes peligros que han acechado y lo hacen aún a la humanidad tienen su origen, según Gehlen, en los trastornos causados por sus propios miembros en las sociedades, debido a que eso que, a lo largo de los siglos, llamamos “cultura” desde el punto de vista antropológico, les ha ido inoculando los virus del egoísmo, la ambición y hasta los celos.

The greatest dangers that have and still do threaten humanity have their origin, according to Gehlen, in the disorders caused by their own members in societies, due to what, over the centuries, we call “culture”. From the anthropological point of view, it has been inoculating them with the viruses of selfishness, ambition and even jealousy.

Hoy lo observamos con tanta claridad que no hay necesidad de centrarse en la oposición para ponerlo sobre la mesa de disección, ya que es advertible, aunque parezca más sutil, entre miembros de la propia coalición de gobierno.

Obvio es que debemos despejar el camino de todo esto y potenciar la referida “función compensatoria”.

Claro, no resultará fácil, aunque las situaciones límite como la que atravesamos suelen servir para devolver sensatez a algunos, ojalá en este caso a la mayoría.

Of course, it will not be easy, although extreme situations like the one we are going through usually serve to restore some sense, hopefully in this case to the majority.

Supongo que me he repetido sobre esta cuestión. O será, nomás, que es necesario dar vueltas como en calesita sobre lo que se intuye esencial.

Ciertamente, ni yo, sacudido a veces por un optimismo que ya no brota del alcohol porque el cardiólogo no me lo permite, puedo sentir esperanzas sólidas al respecto cuando, entre tanta falsedad, guarangadas y malas intenciones que se tiran al aire, ahora nos inventamos un debate absurdo: el gobierno abre la boca y antes de emitir sonido alguna cae sobre él la vociferación del otro lado: ¡Todo ha sido un fracaso y no dejan lugar al diálogo!

Certainly, not even I, shaken at times by an optimism that no longer comes from alcohol because the cardiologist does not allow it, can feel solid hopes in this regard when, among so much falsehood, nonsense and bad intentions that are thrown into the air, we now invent an absurd debate: the government opens its mouth and before making a sound the vociferation of the other side falls on it: Everything has been a failure and they leave no room for dialogue!

No sigamos jodiéndonos la vida al santo cohete, perdiendo de vista que ésta es una causa común, de tal manera que nos merezcamos un viejo poema gallego cuyo autor he olvidado:
