THE THINKER: WOLF IN LAMB’S DISGUISE

Nuestra sociedad sigue degradando el concepto de convivencia, cuestión esencial, de un modo progresivo. Sí, lector, ya he escrito acerca de esta desgracia. Y hoy regreso a ella a través de ejemplos advertidos en una actividad teóricamente formativa: el deporte y, en particular, el más popular y expandido de ellos, el fútbol.

Our society continues to progressively degrade the concept of coexistence, an essential issue. Yes, reader, I have already written about this misfortune. And today I return to it through examples announced in a theoretically formative activity: sport and, in particular, the most popular and widespread of them, soccer.

En momentos en que la cotidianidad social exhibe continuos actos de violencia, falta de respeto por el otro, intolerancia, fanatismo y malevolencia corrosiva, expresada en las calles, en los comercios de cualquier tipo, en los espectáculos públicos y –aquí ingresamos al punto crucial- en los liceos y escuelas, ese deporte, creado para un objetivo absolutamente contrario y que abarca no sólo a la juventud y la madurez sino también, y en este ámbito las consecuencias son terribles, a la niñez cada vez desde más temprano, está contribuyendo a toda la insanía que parece habernos ganado para destruirnos.

At a time when daily social life exhibits continuous acts of violence, lack of respect for the other, intolerance, fanaticism and corrosive malevolence, expressed in the streets, in shops of any kind, in public spectacles and – here we enter the crucial point – In high schools and schools, this sport, created for an absolutely contrary objective and which encompasses not only youth and maturity but also, and in this area the consequences are terrible, to childhood ever earlier, is contributing to all the insanity that seems to have won us over to destroy us.

Por supuesto, no es ninguna novedad que los partidos de fútbol –profesionales o de simples aficionados, en todo el país- son escenarios donde resulta cada día menos probable hallar normalidad; entusiasmo, celebración o frustración, sí, pero también serenidad en todas las actitudes. Al contrario, lo corriente son la agresividad, los insultos, los tumultos, las peleas y una suerte de incitación a descalificar “a los otros”; no hay adversarios sino enemigos y las cosas, como vienen, dejan la impresión que estos actos –que ya han generado tragedias- nos empujan hacia situaciones que hacen recordar las viejas y sanguinarias guerras tribales de tiempos arcaicos.

Of course, it is nothing new that soccer matches –professional or simple amateurs, throughout the country- are scenarios where it is less likely every day to find normality; enthusiasm, celebration or frustration, yes, but also serenity in all attitudes. On the contrary, what is common is aggressiveness, insults, riots, fights and a kind of incitement to disqualify «others»; there are no adversaries but enemies and things, as they come, leave the impression that these acts –which have already generated tragedies- push us towards situations that remind us of the old and bloody tribal wars of archaic times.

Coincidió, días más, días menos, con textos que circularon en las redes sociales, pero ahora desde varias tiendas, incluyendo mensajes de similar contenido y hasta amenazas directas a magistrados de la República.

Confieso que con intenciones de investigación periodística concurrí a presenciar, cual un paseante casual, uno de esos partidos de baby fútbol que se juegan en canchas abiertas con un público mayoritariamente constituido por padres de los chiquilines, cuyas edades, según sea la categoría en que militan, pueden ser seis, siete años, hasta doce o trece.

I confess that with intentions of journalistic investigation I went to witness, like a casual walker, one of those baby soccer matches that are played on open fields with an audience made up mostly of parents of the children, whose ages, depending on the category in which they play They can be six, seven years, up to twelve or thirteen.

No exagero si digo que fue poco menos que una representación estremecedora de lo que reina en el universo de los mayores. Padres y madres gritando e incitando a sus hijos, volviéndolos locos, tanto como los remedos de “entrenadores” que deberían poner orden, disciplina e instar a un comportamiento verdaderamente deportivo, correcto más allá de las fricciones menores que son inherentes al juego, respetuoso de los rivales y preocupados sólo por ser mejores pero no a cualquier costo.

Fathers and mothers yelling and inciting their children, driving them crazy, as well as the imitations of «coaches» who should order, discipline and encourage a truly sporting behavior, correct beyond the minor frictions that are inherent in the game, respectful of rivals and concerned only to be better but not at any cost.

Hogares donde se han perdido valores de convivencia y se traslada a los hijos una idea de individualidad feroz y prepotencia “para ser los mejores” y un desprecio por cualquier tipo de autoridad.

Una educación que, frente a tamaños espectáculos, está también degradada, envejecida y carece de respuestas constructivas que no se queden en lo escrito en los textos y en los aislados y poco efectivos mensajes –cuando los hay- buscando restablecer, ¿recuerda, lector?, aquellos viejos valores que supimos mantener hace mucho, pero mucho tiempo, de benevolencia, de tolerancia, de no discriminación y de respeto, y que aparecen como vestigios borrosos a los que un huracán de barbaridades, año tras año, va diluyendo como un castigo inexorable que… ¿nos merecemos?

Hay que pensar en todo esto. Hay que sincerarse. Hay que asumir las responsabilidades que a cada uno tocan. Estamos a un paso de convertir nuestra sociedad en una selva habitada por ominosas tribus salvajes.
