WALT Whitman nació el 31/05/1819 en West Hills, New York Estados Unidos – Falleció el 26/03/1892 en Camden New Jersey Estados Unidos). Gran Poeta, considerado el gran representante del verso libre y uno de los escritores más influyentes del canon norteamericano. Hijo de madre holandesa y padre británico, fue el segundo de nueve hermanos de una familia con escasos recursos económicos. Pasó sólo ocasionalmente por la escuela y pronto tuvo que empezar a trabajar, primero, y a pesar de su escasa formación académica, como maestro itinerante, y más tarde en una imprenta que fue donde se le despierta su afición por el periodismo, interés que le llevó a trabajar en varios diarios y revistas. Posteriormente fue nombrado director del Brooklyn Eagle en 1846, en el que duró solo dos años por su inconformidad con la línea abiertamente pro esclavista defendida por el periódico.
