THE THINKER: WE ARE GONE

Conocí a Jorge Lanata, hace ya unos cuantos años, cuando decidió tomarse un año sabático en su país, para recluirse en su casa de José Ignacio, en Punta del Este, e intentar, alejándose de tanta presión como la que sentía en ese momento, un descanso reparador, mientras escribía un libro y sin abandonar su ciclo de periodísticos.

I met Jorge Lanata a few years ago, when he decided to take a sabbatical year in his country, to seclude himself in his house in José Ignacio, in Punta del Este, and try, getting away from as much pressure as he felt at that time, a restful rest, while writing a book and without abandoning his journalistic cycle.

Prueba de que todos podemos errar un penal o un gol en la puerta del arco, semejante periodista -de quien se ha dicho, con razón que modificó el periodismo de su país y creó un “antes y un después” de sus éxitos esplendorosos- cayó en las redes argumentales de Federico Fasano, propietario entonces del diario “La República”, que además de una radio FM había montado un canal cable en el que le ofreció el espacio que necesitara.

Proof that we can all miss a penalty or a goal in the goal, such a journalist – of whom it has been rightly said that he modified the journalism of his country and created a «before and after» of his splendid successes – fell in the argumentative networks of Federico Fasano, then owner of the newspaper “La República”, which in addition to an FM radio had set up a cable channel in which he offered him the space he needed.

Hasta hoy, ni el espíritu de Mandrake ha podido explicar el paso en falso de Lanata. Ese canal era de cartón, con todo respeto, me había nombrado a mí como Gerente de Programación, rodeándome de un montón de personas con escasa experiencia.

To this day, not even the spirit of Mandrake has been able to explain Lanata’s misstep. That channel was made of cardboard, with all due respect, it had appointed me as Programming Manager, surrounding me with a lot of people with little experience.

En un almuerzo destinado a organizar el lanzamiento del programa, que presidió Federico, obviamente, y al que concurrí con algunos otros doctores Merengue de la empresa, vi a un Lanata sobrio, pensante, agudo, con las ideas muy claras, ante un pequeño auditorio donde sólo conmigo alcanzó, creo, a sentir que estaba cometiendo un error. Tuve un aparte con él y después de explicarle con mucha delicadeza que iba a encontrarse con un escenario diferente a los que estaba acostumbrado, alcancé a sugerirle que analizara si no estaba cometiendo una equivocación. Se quedó mirándome y vi que aparecía el embrión de la duda; pero, claro, todo parecía conveniente. Federico le ofreció cincuenta mil pesos por mes -único momento en que lo vi muy colorado de cara- a lo que Jorge respondió:

At a lunch intended to organize the launch of the program, which Federico presided over, obviously, and which I attended with some other Merengue doctors from the company, I saw a sober, thoughtful, sharp Lanata, with very clear ideas, in front of a small auditorium. where only with me did he manage, I think, to feel that he was making a mistake. I had a conversation with him and after very delicately explaining to him that he was going to encounter a different scenario than what he was used to, I managed to suggest that he analyze whether he was making a mistake. He stayed looking at me and I saw the embryo of doubt appear; but, of course, everything seemed convenient. Federico offered him fifty thousand pesos per month – the only time I saw him very red-faced – to which Jorge responded:

-No. Yo lo haré gratis. Pero ya que usted está dispuesto a gastar semejante cantidad de dinero -ahí apareció su famosa ironía acerada- distribúyala entre los tres productores que han sido contratados para darme una mano. Es una condición irreversible.

-No. I will do it for free. But since you are willing to spend such an amount of money – there appeared your famous steely irony – distribute it among the three producers who have been hired to give me a hand. It is an irreversible condition.

Fasano entendió el mensaje y cerró el acuerdo. Le había ofrecido lo que Lanata gastaba al mes en algunas propinas y algún UBER que usaba muy de tanto en tanto. Le había faltado el respeto, pero Jorge era un señor.

Fasano got the message and closed the deal. He had offered her what Lanata spent a month on some tips and some UBER that she used very occasionally. He had disrespected him, but Jorge was a gentleman.

Lo malo de la experiencia de Lanata en Uruguay fue que su pasaje por La República fue breve, porque todo lo que pedía faltaba o era manejado sin profesionalidad; exceptúo de esto a sus productores, de los que siempre estuvo agradecido. Las cámaras eran de segunda, las luces nunca estaban en su lugar y, siendo verano, el calor lo volvía loco porque con una frecuencia inusual el aire acondicionado no funcionaba. Un día, casi sobre el final del programa, sudando como esquimal en el Sahara, perdió la calma, vio con claridad lo que seguiría y, de modo muy sonoro, pegó un portazo y se fue a la mierda. Perdón, lo dijo él.

The bad thing about Lanata’s experience in Uruguay was that her time in La República was brief, because everything she asked for was missing or was handled without professionalism; He excepted his producers from this, for whom he was always grateful. The cameras were second-rate, the lights were never in place and, being summer, the heat drove him crazy because with unusual frequency the air conditioning didn’t work. One day, almost towards the end of the program, sweating like an Eskimo in the Sahara, he lost his cool, saw clearly what would follow and, very loudly, slammed the door and went to hell. Sorry, he said it.

Luego, casi de inmediato, lo contrató Canal 12: otro escenario, realmente profesional, que lo hizo iniciar el nuevo ciclo con entusiasmo; pero también duró poco, pero no por el aire acondicionado sino por la censura, que cayó como un dron desde el aire sobre su cabeza. ¡Censurar a Lanata! Había hecho subir el rating del canal, el programa crecía y sin embargo… Bueno, es el Uruguay que tenemos. Otro portazo y, supongo yo, otro viaje a la mierda.

Then, almost immediately, Channel 12 hired him: another scenario, really professional, that made him start the new cycle with enthusiasm; but it also did not last long, but not because of the air conditioning but because of the censorship, which fell like a drone from the air on his head. Censor Lanata! It had raised the channel’s ratings, the program was growing and yet… Well, it’s the Uruguay we have. Another slam of the door and, I suppose, another trip to hell.

Una humilde aclaración: yo renuncié antes.

Preferí, para referirme a Jorge Lanata, contar estas anécdotas, que conozco bien, porque además miden la capacidad o el interés real de las empresas locales por hacer un periodismo valiente, incisivo, profesional a toda prueba, sin meter la cuchara.

I preferred, to refer to Jorge Lanata, to tell these anecdotes, which I know well, because they also measure the capacity or real interest of local companies to do brave, incisive, professional journalism that is foolproof, without putting in the spoon.

Ahora bien: Lanata fue un gran periodista; sería ocioso que yo alargara esto recordando todos los impactos impresionantes que encabezó en prensa escrita, radio y televisión. Fue un creador valiente y muy inteligente, que, tal vez, tenía cierto hábito de exhibicionismo cuando aparecía en la pantalla; fumando siempre, el colorido de sus trajes camisas y corbatas y cierta ironía borgeana muy filosa podían incomodar o distraer a gente que, en la pantalla, ve los colores y presta menos atención o entendimiento a lo que se dice.

Now: Lanata was a great journalist; It would be pointless for me to lengthen this by remembering all the impressive impacts that he had in the written press, radio and television. He was a brave and very intelligent creator, who, perhaps, had a certain habit of exhibitionism when he appeared on the screen; always smoking, the color of his suits, shirts and ties and a certain very sharp Borgesian irony could bother or distract people who, on the screen, see the colors and pay less attention or understanding to what is being said.

Yo, en mi breve contacto con él, repito, lo sentí como un hombre mucho más sereno, reflexivo y benevolente de lo que, en apariencia, “vendía” su estilo.

I, in my brief contact with him, I repeat, felt him to be a much more serene, reflective and benevolent man than what his style apparently “sold.”

Cometía errores, sí; era un enorme hombre público al que nadie veía con indiferencia. Dejó una herencia incalculable, más allá de todos los conmovedores cambios que propició en el periodismo de su país durante décadas.

He made mistakes, yes; He was an enormous public man whom no one viewed with indifference. He left an incalculable legacy, beyond all the moving changes he brought about in his country’s journalism for decades.

Se ha ido un grande. ¿Con excesos? Sí. ¿Con errores? También. Era un ser humano intelectual y culturalmente muy rico, con claros -enormes- y algunas oscuridades.

A great one has gone. With excesses? Yes. With errors? Also. He was an intellectually and culturally very rich human being, with enormous – and some – dark lights.

Chau, Jorge. Ahora no te preocupará lo que digan, que, al contrario de lo siguen propalando tus detractores, generaban una explosión de tu supuesto carácter arisco…

Bye, Jorge. Now you will not worry about what they say, which, contrary to what your detractors continue to propagate, generated an explosion of your supposed surly character…
