The explanation, the concern, and the reality of the American economy

Donald Trump is kicking off a tour that will take him through Texas and Oklahoma, asserting that his administration’s problem has not been managing the economy, but explaining it.
The president himself acknowledged that he has done a «very poor job» of communicating his economic achievements, maintaining that his administration is doing a great job running the country but a very poor one when it comes to promoting it.
According to Trump and his administration, there are reasons to celebrate: economic growth, business strength, technology investments, energy production, and a tariff policy aimed at protecting American industry.
Y algunos números ciertamente muestran fortaleza.
And some figures certainly show strength.
Gross Domestic Product grew at an annualized rate of 2.2% during the second quarter of 2026, driven by consumption, investment, and exports.
But looking at the economy from a podium is one thing; viewing it from a supermarket checkout counter is quite another.
President Trump presents an economic picture dominated by favorable indicators. However, that snapshot fails to fully capture what many citizens experience when paying for housing, fuel, groceries, cars, or credit card bills.

PCE inflation stood at 3.4% year-over-year in August—still above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.
The mortgage market isn’t exactly thriving either: the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage hit 7.03% on September 24.
Meanwhile, consumer confidence fell in September to its lowest level in roughly twelve and a half years.
And there remains another guest at the table whom no one wants to invite to dinner: federal debt and the associated interest costs. The Congressional Budget Office projects net interest payments of around $1 trillion for 2026.
So, perhaps the United States’ economic problem isn’t merely a matter of how the situation is explained.
After all, you can spend an hour explaining to the average citizen that the economy is doing magnificently.
But then that citizen leaves the speech, walks into the supermarket, fills half a cart, looks at the receipt, and says:
«Mr. President, explain it to me again… because it seems my wallet missed that class.»
The reality of the U.S. economy presents a stark contrast between the strength of certain macroeconomic indicators and the financial anxiety still felt by a large portion of the citizenry.
The economy is growing, business investment is happening, and markets may be showing strength. Yet, that bird’s-eye view doesn’t always align with the picture a family sees when they open the fridge, pay the mortgage, fill the gas tank, or look at a credit card statement.
Trump insists that one of his major problems has been failing to adequately explain his economic achievements.
And here, my investigative memory inevitably leads me to another product that also bore his surname: Trump University.
That wasn’t an accredited university, but rather a business focused primarily on real estate seminars. After years of litigation over allegations of deceptive practices, Trump agreed to a $25 million settlement without admitting liability.
I am not saying that the two cases are legally identical.
What strikes me is the way an explanation is sold.
Back then, seminars were sold under the banner of a university.
Today, an economy described by the White House as strong and successful is being sold.
Y puede existir crecimiento económico. Puede subir la bolsa. Puede aumentar la inversión empresarial. Todo eso puede ser cierto.
And economic growth may well be happening. The stock market might be rising. Business investment could be increasing. All of that may be true.
But at the same time, it can also be true that the average citizen remains worried about the cost of living.
The Federal Reserve itself acknowledges that inflation remains high, while consumers face high interest rates and a still-uncertain economic outlook. And Fed studies on the 2025 tariffs found that a portion of those costs ended up being passed on to the prices paid by households, disproportionately affecting lower-income families.
So, the problem doesn’t seem to be just that Donald Trump failed to explain his economic policies.
It may also be that ordinary citizens are doing the math themselves.
And that math doesn’t happen at a podium.
It happens at the kitchen table.
Con una calculadora.
With a calculator.
Un montón de facturas.
A stack of bills.
Y alguien diciendo:
And someone saying:
«Donald, explain it to me again, because your numbers and mine still don’t add up.»
