“La bola negra”. Un paradigma de la cultura queer

“The Black Ball.” A Paradigm of Queer Culture

Impacto. Ambientación. Inquietud.

Impact. Atmosphere. Unease.

O ambas cosas.

A work that demands multiple viewings—because once is not enough to fully grasp its depths or to decide whether it is truly the acclaimed film that won awards at Cannes, Toronto, and San Sebastián (and a potential 2027 Oscar contender), or merely a melodramatic, cinematic adaptation designed to win prizes. Or perhaps, it is both.

Impact: An exceptionally high percentage of the frames in *La bola negra* play out as climactic moments. This creates a state of unease in the viewer that borders on sensory overload—pushing the limits of what is bearable. It is one of the elements that makes this story unique.

Setting: The atmosphere is so authentic, true-to-life, and masterfully realized that the viewer feels completely immersed in the wartime environment—amidst the violence, the hatred, the panic (that extreme form of fear), the love forged by war, the executions mandated by war, and the reality of being gay in that era. War transforms every emotion—for better, for worse, or for both. War makes the unrealities of peacetime real. This is what makes the story unique.

Unease: It is so real, authentic, and effectively instilled in the viewer that the atmosphere becomes stifling during many of the climactic moments. This also makes the story unique.

Two real-life events added intensity to the drama of the fictional *La bola negra*: the breakup of the directing duo—Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo—after thirteen years as a couple; and the threat of a brain aneurysm while Penélope Cruz was playing her brief, intense role as the *cuplé* singer Nené Romero. Fortunately, it was a false alarm.

In the 1930s, a jury would vote on whether or not to admit someone as a member of a casino using white and black balls. Homosexuality was one of the grounds for rejection—a trauma that tore families apart and destroyed lives.

It appears that a machine-gun attack on an entire town—while the residents were cheering the arrival of supposed friends—did actually take place. It is unusual for a film to begin with its most shocking climax.

Sebastián—the most fictional of the characters, a soldier for the rebels, and the most dramatic of the protagonists, whose greatest secret is revealed eighty years after the events in a way that impacts his descendants—is the true core of the story. As always, fiction surpasses reality, which in turn is embedded within the fiction of a reality. This, too, makes *La bola negra* unique.

Cipriano Rivas Cheriff was the first custodian of this work that Federico García Lorca was unable to finish writing.

Snow: an image of death. Like the moon.

*La piedra oscura* (The Dark Stone)—where «dark» (*oscura*/*oscuro*) is synonymous with «secret» in Lorca’s poetry and drama. Its author, Alberto Conejero, was essential to the screenplay of *La bola negra*.

Veánla dos veces.

Watch it twice.
