INDIA: Do all women have ten invisible arms?

Diez brazos. Diez manos. Diez formas de proteger, crear, sostener y luchar.

Ten arms. Ten hands. Ten ways to protect, create, sustain, and fight.

Para quien observa por primera vez una imagen de la diosa Durga, sus diez brazos pueden parecer simplemente un elemento extraordinario de la iconografía hindú. Para un bengalí, sin embargo, esa imagen contiene muchas más capas. Durga es poder, protección y victoria sobre el mal, pero también es hija, madre y mujer.

To someone seeing an image of the goddess Durga for the first time, her ten arms might simply appear to be an extraordinary element of Hindu iconography. For a Bengali, however, that image holds many more layers. Durga represents power, protection, and victory over evil, but she is also a daughter, a mother, and a woman.

Y quizá por eso su imagen sigue resultando tan contemporánea.

And perhaps that is why her image remains so contemporary.

Cada otoño, Bengala espera su regreso.

Every autumn, Bengal awaits her return.

Durante Durga Puja, una de las celebraciones más importantes del este de la India, la diosa deja de sentirse distante. Según la tradición bengalí, Durga regresa simbólicamente a la casa de sus padres acompañada de Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati y Kartikeya.

During Durga Puja—one of the most important celebrations in eastern India—the goddess no longer feels distant. According to Bengali tradition, Durga symbolically returns to her parents’ home accompanied by Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kartikeya.

No llega únicamente como una divinidad poderosa. Llega como una hija que vuelve a casa.

She arrives not merely as a powerful deity, but as a daughter coming home.

Durante unos días, las calles cambian de aspecto. Aparecen enormes pandals, esculturas, luces, música y multitudes. Las familias salen juntas, visitan las diferentes representaciones de la diosa y comparten largas comidas.

For a few days, the streets are transformed. Huge *pandals* appear, along with sculptures, lights, music, and crowds. Families go out together, visiting the various representations of the goddess and sharing long meals.

Toda la ciudad parece prepararse para recibir a alguien querido.

The entire city seems to be preparing to welcome a beloved guest.

Esta manera de entender a Durga es especialmente significativa dentro de la cultura bengalí.

This way of understanding Durga holds special significance within Bengali culture.

La misma figura que aparece venciendo al demonio Mahishasura con diez brazos también es tratada con la ternura con la que una familia recibe a una hija después de una larga ausencia.

The very same figure who appears vanquishing the demon Mahishasura with her ten arms is also treated with the tenderness a family shows a daughter returning after a long absence.

Aquí no existe necesariamente una contradicción entre fuerza y afecto.

Here, there is no necessary contradiction between strength and affection.

Durga puede combatir y cuidar. Puede representar autoridad y, al mismo tiempo, pertenencia. Puede ser temida por sus enemigos y recibida con cariño en el hogar.

Durga can both fight and nurture. She can embody authority and, at the same time, a sense of belonging. She can be feared by her enemies and welcomed with love into the home.

Quizá ahí aparece la primera conexión con la vida de muchas mujeres.

Perhaps this is where the first connection to the lives of many women emerges.

¿Cuántas veces una mujer cambia de papel a lo largo de un mismo día?

How often does a woman shift roles over the course of a single day?

Hija. Madre. Hermana. Profesional. Cuidadora. Amiga. Compañera. Organizadora. Consejera. Protectora.

Daughter. Mother. Sister. Professional. Caregiver. Friend. Partner. Organizer. Advisor. Protector.

No tienen diez brazos visibles, pero muchas parecen necesitar diez.

They may not have ten visible arms, yet many seem to need ten.

Los diez brazos invisibles / The Ten Invisible Arms

En las representaciones tradicionales, cada una de las manos de Durga sostiene un arma o un objeto con significado simbólico. Sus brazos expresan su capacidad para enfrentarse simultáneamente a diferentes fuerzas.

In traditional depictions, each of Durga’s hands holds a weapon or an object of symbolic significance. Her arms express her ability to confront different forces simultaneously.

Pero fuera de los templos y de los pandals, existe otra versión de esos diez brazos.

But beyond the temples and the *pandals*, there exists another version of those ten arms.

Son los brazos invisibles de las mujeres que preparan una comida mientras responden a una llamada de trabajo. Los de una madre que acompaña a sus hijos mientras cuida también de sus propios padres. Los de una joven que estudia, trabaja, ayuda a su familia y sigue intentando construir su propio futuro.

They are the invisible arms of women who prepare a meal while answering a work call. Those of a mother who looks after her children while also caring for her own parents. Those of a young woman who studies, works, helps her family, and keeps striving to build her own future.

Los brazos invisibles no llevan necesariamente espadas ni tridentes.

These invisible arms do not necessarily wield swords or tridents.

A veces llevan un ordenador, unas llaves, una bolsa de la compra, un libro, un teléfono o simplemente la mano de otra persona.

Sometimes they hold a computer, keys, a shopping bag, a book, a phone, or simply another person’s hand.

Y quizá ahí está la fuerza de la imagen de Durga. No representa únicamente una fuerza física extraordinaria. Representa la capacidad de sostener muchas realidades al mismo tiempo.

And perhaps therein lies the power of the image of Durga. She represents not merely extraordinary physical strength; she represents the capacity to sustain many realities at once.

Sin embargo, también existe una pregunta necesaria.

Yet, a necessary question also arises.

¿Debemos admirar que una mujer pueda hacerlo todo, o preguntarnos por qué esperamos que tenga que hacerlo?

Should we admire the fact that a woman can do it all, or ask ourselves why we expect her to?

Cuando la celebración también se sienta a la mesa / When the celebration also takes a seat at the table

Durga Puja también muestra otra característica particular de Bengala: la relación entre espiritualidad y vida cotidiana.

Durga Puja also highlights another distinctive feature of Bengal: the relationship between spirituality and everyday life.

En muchas regiones del norte de la India, las festividades religiosas de este periodo están asociadas con el ayuno y la alimentación vegetariana.

In many regions of North India, religious festivities during this period are associated with fasting and a vegetarian diet.

En Bengala, la experiencia puede ser muy distinta.

In Bengal, the experience can be quite different.

The arrival of Durga is not marked solely by austerity; it is also celebrated through gatherings, food, conversation, and the joy of being together.

Después de todo, si una hija vuelve a casa después de mucho tiempo, ¿no intentaría su familia recibirla con aquello que más disfruta?

After all, if a daughter returns home after a long time, wouldn’t her family want to welcome her with the things she enjoys most?

La divinidad entra así en la vida cotidiana. Se vuelve cercana, familiar, casi doméstica.

In this way, the divine enters everyday life—becoming close, familiar, and almost domestic.

Una tierra vestida para recibirla / A land dressed to welcome her

Durante estos días, el otoño parece adquirir otro significado.

During these days, autumn seems to take on a new meaning.

Las calles se llenan de personas que pasan de un pandal a otro. El arte ocupa temporalmente espacios urbanos enteros. Barrios completos construyen estructuras que pueden inspirarse en templos, acontecimientos sociales, culturas diferentes o problemas contemporáneos.

The streets fill with people moving from one *pandal* to another. Art temporarily claims entire urban spaces. Whole neighborhoods construct structures inspired by temples, social events, diverse cultures, or contemporary issues.

Durga Puja no es únicamente una ceremonia religiosa.

Durga Puja is not merely a religious ceremony.

Es también arte, diseño, gastronomía, identidad y comunidad.

It is also art, design, gastronomy, identity, and community.

Pero en el centro de todo permanece ella.

But at the heart of it all, she remains.

Una mujer con diez brazos.

A woman with ten arms.

Una imagen imposible que, de alguna manera, resulta sorprendentemente familiar.

An impossible image that, somehow, feels surprisingly familiar.

El poder femenino y sus contradicciones / Female power and its contradictions

Durga representa también Shakti, la energía femenina.

Durga also represents Shakti, the feminine energy.

Su victoria sobre Mahishasura constituye una de las imágenes más poderosas de la tradición hindú: cuando otras fuerzas no pueden detenerlo, es una diosa quien finalmente lo derrota.

Her victory over Mahishasura stands as one of the most powerful images in the Hindu tradition: when other forces fail to stop him, it is a goddess who ultimately defeats him.

Por eso, Durga puede interpretarse también como símbolo del poder femenino.

For this reason, Durga can also be interpreted as a symbol of feminine power.

Pero quizá nuestra lectura contemporánea debe ir un poco más lejos.

Yet perhaps our contemporary reading should go a little further.

Admiramos a Durga porque tiene diez brazos. Admiramos a las mujeres que consiguen combinar trabajo, familia, estudios, cuidados y responsabilidades.

We admire Durga because she has ten arms. We admire women who manage to juggle work, family, studies, caregiving, and responsibilities.

Pero existe una diferencia importante entre reconocer la fortaleza de alguien y convertir esa fortaleza en una obligación.

But there is a significant difference between recognizing someone’s strength and turning that strength into an obligation.

Una mujer no debería necesitar diez brazos para demostrar su valor.

A woman should not need ten arms to prove her worth.

Tal vez la verdadera fuerza no consiste en poder cargar con todo, sino también en tener derecho a no cargar con todo.

Perhaps true strength lies not in being able to shoulder everything, but also in having the right *not* to shoulder everything.

Cuando Durga vuelve a marcharse / When Durga leaves again

Al final de la celebración llega Vijaya Dashami.

Vijaya Dashami marks the end of the celebration.

Las imágenes de Durga son llevadas hacia el agua para su inmersión. Hay música y celebración, pero también cierta melancolía.

Images of Durga are carried to the water for immersion. There is music and celebration, yet a touch of melancholy, too.

La hija debe marcharse.

The daughter must depart.

La despedida contiene, sin embargo, una promesa sencilla: volverá el próximo año.

The farewell, however, holds a simple promise: she will return next year.

Y tal vez por eso la imagen de Durga permanece mucho después de que terminen las luces y las celebraciones.

And perhaps that is why the image of Durga lingers long after the lights and festivities have faded.

Nos deja pensando en sus diez brazos.

She leaves us thinking about her ten arms.

En todo aquello que sostienen.

About everything they hold.

Y también en todas las mujeres que, sin poseerlos, parecen utilizar diez cada día.

And also about all the women who—without actually possessing them—seem to use ten arms every single day.

Quizá sí.

Perhaps they do.

Pero tal vez la pregunta más importante sea otra:

But maybe the more important question is this:

¿Cuándo dejaremos de admirarlas solamente por todo lo que son capaces de sostener y empezaremos también a preguntarnos cuánto deberían tener que sostener solas?

When will we stop admiring them solely for all they are capable of holding, and start asking ourselves how much they should really have to carry on their own?
