Reflections: The Sense and Significance of Women in Cultural Manifestations

YUMAK APONTE Dra. Ciencias de la Educación, Escritora, CDG de Educación, Productora de Radio Hola Mundo. Gerente Gral. Eventos Internacionales, Adjunta Presidencia APCSX GROUP Prensa Especializada

Embarking on the Master’s program in Popular Culture at the University of Carabobo led me to a wonderful encounter with culture and its sociocultural fabric. Along this journey, one stumbles upon living knowledge that springs from direct experiences within communities. It was then that I sought to understand and embrace worlds that were perhaps not originally my own; yet, as a woman, I felt a compelling need to delve deep and uncover the sense and significance that cultural expressions hold for the growth of the individual, the community, society, and—most especially—women. This is what inspires the love, passion, commitment, sense of responsibility, magic, and beauty I find in what I do and experience within the realm of popular culture.

Mexican anthropologist Guillermo Bonfil Batalla defines culture—and, by extension, its practical manifestations—as the “set of symbols, values, attitudes, skills, knowledge, meanings, forms of social communication and organization, and material goods that make the life of a given society possible and enable it to transform and reproduce itself as such.”

We could say, then, that based on this perspective, a cultural manifestation is the practical embodiment of that repertoire of meanings: the way a people externalizes its history and worldview through rituals, festivities, art, cuisine, or oral traditions.

«All true culture is popular: it is born and grows from the periphery to the center and from the bottom up.»

Cultural expressions are imbued with wisdom, beliefs, magic, linguistic richness, values, and art—expressed by their practitioners, participants, observers, and historians—forming an indivisible part of their sociocultural world. As Hermoso (1999, p. 2) notes, this is the realm where individuals interact and forge relationships because they share the same «life-space» within the same «lived time»; it is where bonds of belonging are forged, language is acquired, and action is oriented toward mutual understanding. Consequently, there is an undeniable presence of knowledge rooted deeply in both cognitive and affective dimensions.

In my capacity as a researcher, I set out to weave together a comprehensive framework in this article addressing cultural expressions, gender, research processes, and epistemological approaches within the educational and pedagogical spheres. As Dr. Schavino suggests, the aim is to foster a setting that recreates multiple identities, diversities, interactions, and interconnections—one that, through autopoietic potential, promotes the emergence of new social spaces for generating socially relevant knowledge. Viewed in this light, the findings of this research—which explored the sense and significance of women as cultural practitioners and how they are valued—enabled the creation of a categorical framework. From this framework emerged new conceptualizations woven from the threads of popular knowledge by the social actors themselves (the female informants); these concepts will aid in constructing, deconstructing, learning, unlearning, understanding, and sharing knowledge within school settings from a perspective that is both human-centered and dynamically harmonizing. All of this is grounded in the phenomenological-interpretive paradigm, thereby breaking away from the deeply ingrained positivist view that still permeates the research practices of some educators.

Cultural expressions are the living memory and identify of peoples, and a reflection of their history over time

By way of concluding reflection, it is important to note that gender—within the realm of popular cultural expression—often reproduces or repeats behavioral patterns that imply exclusion, whether consciously or unconsciously. It is a fact that, even in the twenty-first century, a reductionist or chauvinistic perspective permeates human activity and evolution regarding the role of women or concepts symbolically associated with the feminine. Indeed, while one cannot definitively assert the existence of discrimination in the strict, etymological sense of the word, there remain pockets and norms that reflect elements of differentiation. Perhaps—just perhaps—we are dealing with a deeply rooted phenomenological aspect, one that has been internalized and transmitted as part of the very semiotic structure of tradition. This is a reality that awaits examination and transformation, and addressing this unfinished business falls to our schools.

Elementos valóricos de este nuevo concepto sociocultural

Value-based elements of this new sociocultural concept

Constructed Reality: A culture is a network of conversations defining a way of living, being, and existing—in both the human and non-human realms. It entails a way of acting, experiencing emotion, and growing through action (Maturana).
Distinctive Elements: Every culture—and by extension, every folk expression—contains unique, specific elements. These serve as heuristic tools for better understanding the cultural processes that unfold when two groups with contrasting identities connect the familiar with the unfamiliar.
Folk Wisdom: Wisdom is a form of «knowing-how» rooted in life experience and a spontaneous pursuit of the magical, love, respect, dance, and the intrinsic meaning of culture; it allows us to weigh and discern the daily lives of cultural practitioners within their sociocultural world.
The Historical Dimension: This relates to our past events and a sociocultural heritage comprising happenings, legends, narratives, poetry, rituals, and dances. These are transmitted faithfully and authentically from generation to generation, enriching a people’s culture.
Thought Structure: This encompasses all ways of articulating and organizing thought. It takes tangible form through the power of visualization—embodied in the image and bearing of the female dancers—as well as through symbols that connect with the absent (traveling to the past via the imagination) and the oral and gestural signs specific to each cultural expression.
