A single day can hold many lives.

COLUMNISTA
Sometimes I wonder, how can so much life fit into a single day?
Uno se despierta feliz.
Sin una razón concreta.
You wake up happy. Without any specific reason.
Perhaps because the day dawned beautifully, because a long-awaited message arrived, or because, for a few minutes, the world seems to be exactly where it should be.
Desayuna.
Sonríe.
Hace planes.
He has breakfast. He smiles. He makes plans. And he thinks that today could be a good day.
Después sucede algo.
Then something happens.
Una llamada.
Una noticia.
Una palabra dicha en el momento equivocado.
A phone call. A piece of news. A word spoken at the wrong moment.
And the person who was smiling an hour ago is now looking out the window, trying to understand why something so small managed to move their heart so deeply.
Así somos.
That’s how we are.
A rollercoaster that no one sees. We can go from joy to nostalgia in a matter of minutes. Laugh while walking, only to feel an inexplicable urge to cry upon arriving home. We can be excited about a project in the morning and doubt ourselves by the afternoon. We can miss someone we know we shouldn’t miss. We can feel like we are enough at ten o’clock, only to wonder again if we matter to anyone by eleven.
Y no siempre significa que estemos mal.
And it doesn’t always mean that we’re doing badly.
Perhaps it means we are alive. That we feel. That every day, we are touched by small things we cannot always name.
There are days when we are brave. Others when we need someone to tell us that everything will be okay. There are days when we want to take on the world. And others when we can barely manage to get out of bed.
Then there are those strange days when everything happens at the same time.
Nos reímos.
Nos preocupamos.
Nos enamoramos un poquito.
Nos decepcionamos.
Recordamos.
Perdonamos.
Extrañamos.
We laugh. We worry. We fall a little in love. We get disappointed. We remember. We forgive. We miss.
fuimos humanos.
And before going to sleep, we ask ourselves what on earth happened to us during those twenty-four hours. Perhaps the answer is simple: we were human.
We have become accustomed to believing that we should feel only one thing at a time.
As if being happy meant we couldn’t be sad. As if feeling fear invalidated our courage. As if missing someone meant we hadn’t learned to let go.
Pero el corazón no funciona así.
But the heart doesn’t work that way.
El corazón no tiene horarios.
No revisa una agenda antes de sentir.
The heart keeps no schedule. It doesn’t check a calendar before feeling.
That is why he can wake up full of hope and go to bed tired.
You might laugh in the morning and cry at night. You might want to stay and, at the same time, need to leave. You might remember something beautiful and feel pain because of it.
Quizás no deberíamos exigirnos tanta coherencia emocional.
Quizás algunos días simplemente vienen a enseñarnos que podemos sentir muchas cosas y seguir siendo nosotros.
Perhaps we shouldn’t demand such emotional consistency from ourselves. Perhaps some days simply come to teach us that we can feel many things and still remain ourselves.
Porque mañana volverá a salir el sol.
Y tal vez despertemos diferentes.
O tal vez no.
Because the sun will rise again tomorrow. And perhaps we’ll wake up different. Or perhaps not.
We might still be carrying today’s sadness, but find a reason to smile. And that will be okay, too.
Sube.
Baja.
Nos sacude.
Nos asusta.
Nos hace reír.
In the end, life isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes it’s a roller coaster. It goes up. It goes down. It shakes us. It scares us. It makes us laugh.
And just when we think we’ve understood the route, an unexpected curve appears.
Quizás crecer sea precisamente aprender a viajar en ella.
Perhaps growing up is precisely learning to travel within it.
Without demanding that the heart stop feeling. Without being ashamed of our contradictions.
And understanding that even on a difficult day… there can also be small moments worth remembering.
