Let me tell you a story: Paulita and Tachi

As she swam, she encountered a school of sardines moving with the northern current; she paused to admire the amazing sight of the fish all lined up together.

Paulita miro con cuidado y observó que había un ser marino que no había visto nunca, ¡wooow! Paulita looked closely and spotted a sea creature she had never seen before—wow! It was a small manta ray moving with extraordinary grace; it was simply fascinating! It glided through the currents, moving up and down, and she wondered, «Who is that? Does it fly or float? It looks like it has wings!» She had never seen movement quite like that, and she was utterly enchanted.

Ella se acercó suavecito y exclamo ¡oye! Yo soy Paulita, sabes ¡parece que tienes aaaalas! Te vez tan ligera que pareces volar ¿Cómo te llamas?

She approached gently and exclaimed, «Hey! I’m Paulita, you know… it looks like you have wiiiings! You look so light, it’s as if you’re flying. What’s your name?»

La mantarraya se detuvo en ese momento y le sonrió.

The manta ray stopped right then and smiled at her.

¡Hola! Me llamo Tachi y soy una mantarraya, muchas gracias por tan lindo comentario de tu parte, Paulita, tú eres una preciosa ballena y eres admirada por muchos de nosooootros ¿sabías eso?

«Hello! My name is Tachi, and I’m a manta ray. Thank you so much for such a lovely comment, Paulita. You’re a beautiful whale, and you’re admired by many of uuuus—did you know that?»

Contesto Paulita No, solo sé que estoy muy pesada y aunque nado grandes distancias y soy conocedora de las corrientes del mar, nunca lo hubiera sabido, casi nadie se detiene a saludarme porque piensan que me los voy a comer, pero no es así, reconozco que eres muy especial Tachi y le sonrió.

Paulita replied, «No, I only know that I’m very heavy. Even though I swim great distances and know the ocean currents well, I never would have guessed that. Hardly anyone stops to say hello because they think I’m going to eat them, but that’s not the case. I can see that you’re very special, Tachi,» and she smiled at her.

Mira, le contesto Tachi, tal vez para ti sea común, pero eres un ser marino muy bello y de gran tamaño, además siempre eres muy amable con todos.

«Look,» Tachi replied, «it might be ordinary to you, but you are a truly beautiful and magnificent sea creature—and you’re always so kind to everyone.»

Tachi continued, «Can I tell you something? You don’t need wings; you are very lucky. You lead a rich life in the deep and can discover a thousand secrets of the sea.» She smiled while moving gracefully. «You know, every creature has its own unique nature. Here’s something I love to say: We are one of a kind!»

Paulita sonrió agradecida, tienes razón amiga ligera y linda, cuando tú quieras yo te llevo a viajar conmigo a conocer otras partes que son preciosas en nuestro extenso habitad marino, por ejemplo, los arrecifes rojos, tú me dices y con gusto yo te llevo amiga. Además, con tu forma de mantarraya y tus movimientos fascinantes de verdad que parece que vuelas de una forma extraordinaria y es un honor verte, como surcas en el agua paseando ligera.

Paulita smiled gratefully. «You’re right, my lovely, graceful friend. Whenever you like, I can take you along to see other beautiful parts of our vast marine habitat—like the red reefs. Just say the word, and I’d be happy to take you. Besides, with your manta ray shape and those fascinating movements, it really looks like you’re flying in an extraordinary way. It’s an honor to watch you glide so effortlessly through the water.»

Entonces contesto Tachi sonriendo -je, je, je- además somos muy platicadoras las dos, -ji, ji, ji- tienes razón, comento Paulita.

Tachi smiled and replied, «Hehe… and we both love to chat, too—heehee.» «You’re right,» Paulita agreed.

Tachi emphasized, «I think we’re both lucky to live in this wonderful paradise called the ocean; meeting each other is a joy, too.»

Paulita nodded. «Living a fulfilling life in this wonderful paradise is a true treasure.» They both realized that each possessed different talents and a unique, magical way of swimming.

Paulita thanked Tachi for the lovely conversation and said, almost as a farewell, «It was a delight to meet you.» The manta ray smiled back and replied, «It is wonderful to fly with someone like you—someone so special. See you soon, Paulita.» «See you soon, Tachi.»

Entonces se perdieron entre los bellos arrecifes azules y dorados junto a las algas verdes marinas en el mar.

Then, they disappeared amidst the beautiful blue and gold reefs and the green seaweed of the sea.

Ambas se dieron cuenta que nunca existió la envidia sino al contrario la admiración y el respeto por ser cada una diferente, ese es el gran tesoro, vivir en armonía con quien compartir tu bello habitad de vida.

Both realized that there had never been any envy—quite the opposite; there was admiration and respect for their differences. That is the true treasure: living in harmony with those who share your beautiful habitat.
