Acabo de leer el último libro de Vicente Vallés, La caza del ejecutor. El autor lleva más de treinta años en el periodismo político, es el actual Jefe de Informativos de Cadena 3 TV y en mi opinión uno de los profesionales más objetivos del panorama actual, tan sesgado, tan al servicio de ya sea tirios o troyanos. Por tanto un gran conocedor de intrahistorias que nunca llegan a los medios de comunicación, historias secretas que tratan de lo que hay detrás  de los conflictos (inventados) que afligen al mundo en general y a buena parte del mundo  en particular.

I just finished reading Vicente Vallés’s latest book, *The Hunt for the Executioner*. The author has been a political journalist for over thirty years, is currently the Head of News at Cadena 3 TV, and in my opinion, one of the most objective professionals in today’s media landscape, so biased and beholden to one side or the other. He is therefore a great connoisseur of the behind-the-scenes stories that never reach the mainstream media, secret histories that reveal what lies behind the (manufactured) conflicts that afflict the world in general and a good part of the world in particular.

La caza del ejecutor revela la intrahistoria, con personajes reales y los necesarios ficticios de toda bioficción, aunque aquí hay más de bio que de ficción. Con nombres falsos ahí están los presidentes de Rusia, Estados Unidos, primer ministro británico, jefes y miembros de los correspondientes servicios de inteligencia, la CIA, FBI, el MI6 británico los rusos SVR, (Inteligencia exterior) GRU, (Inteligencia militar) FSB, (Servicio Federal de Seguridad y Contrainteligencia) el chino MSS, (Ministerio de Seguridad del Estado) el español CNI, (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) los marroquíes DGT (Contrainteligencia y Contraterrorismo)  y DGED, (Inteligencia Exterior) y algún otro. Y los necesarios ejecutores, por supuesto.

The Hunt for the Executioner reveals the inner workings of the story, featuring real people and the necessary fictional characters of any biographical work, although here there’s more biographical than fictional. Under pseudonyms are the presidents of Russia and the United States, the British prime minister, heads and members of their respective intelligence services: the CIA, FBI, the British MI6, the Russian SVR (Foreign Intelligence), GRU (Military Intelligence), and FSB (Federal Security and Counterintelligence Service), the Chinese MSS (Ministry of State Security), the Spanish CNI (National Intelligence Center), the Moroccan DGT (Counterintelligence and Counterterrorism) and DGED (Foreign Intelligence), and others. And, of course, the necessary executioners.

Un mundo en el que nadie se fía de nadie, -con buenas razones para ello – un mundo de topos, que todos los implicados saben que existen y que cuando alguno es descubierto o tiene la suerte de escapar a tiempo al país que lo protegerá, o es eliminado, a veces aparentando suicidios, o fulminantes ataques al corazón, o cualquier otra causa ficticia, nunca la verdadera. La traición al jefe supremo no tiene otra solución que la eliminación sin contemplaciones. Un mundo oscuro, deshumanizado, donde nadie se siente seguro, regido por el temor, en el que la confianza no digamos el amor no pueden existir ni por norma interna que debilitaría el servicio, ni por desconfianza mutua, aunque en el libro que citamos el autor, maestro de la novela de espías, se ha permitido una excepción entre una espía ficticia del CNI y otro de la CIA.

A world where no one trusts anyone—with good reason—a world of moles, whose existence is known to all involved, and where, when one is discovered, they either manage to escape in time to a country that will protect them, or they are eliminated, sometimes staged as suicides, sudden heart attacks, or any other fictitious cause, never the real one. Betrayal of the supreme leader has no other solution than ruthless elimination. A dark, dehumanized world where no one feels safe, ruled by fear, where trust, let alone love, cannot exist, neither due to internal regulations that would weaken the service, nor due to mutual distrust, although in the book we are citing, the author, a master of the spy novel, has allowed himself an exception between a fictional spy from the CNI and one from the CIA.

El caso troncal de  La caza del ejecutor es la filtración a los servicios de inteligencia amigos pero en realidad enemigos por parte de un importantísimo y casi indetectable topo, de un conflicto inventado con la intención de producir una reacción de los servicios adversarios que justifique la contra reacción del gobierno constructor del plan original. Nada se hace de forma directa, siempre utilizando caminos oblicuos para que el engaño parezca certeza. Por supuesto ninguno de los implicados por el camino conoce la verdadera intención del filtro que recibe, que parece tan creíble, tan fiable. De eso se trata, de una aparente credibilidad que no lo es en absoluto.

The central case in *The Hunt for the Executioner* is the leak to friendly but actually enemy intelligence services—by a crucial and almost undetectable mole—of a fabricated conflict intended to provoke a reaction from the opposing services, thus justifying a counter-reaction from the government that conceived the original plan. Nothing is done directly; oblique paths are always used to make the deception appear certain. Of course, none of those involved along the way know the true intention of the leak, which seems so credible, so reliable. That’s the point: an apparent credibility that is anything but.

La caza del ejecutor se desarrolla en los dos meses que transcurren entre las últimas elecciones norteamericanas y la toma de posesión del nuevo presidente. La acción principal y las acciones colaterales tienen que consolidarse y ejecutarse necesariamente antes de este cambio que todos saben que cambiará todo y en el que el plan quedaría obsoleto, porque el nuevo presidente va a ser muy amigo y cómplice del presidente adversario. Los jefes de los servicios de inteligencia norteamericanos serían cambiados por otros al gusto de los intereses del nuevo presidente, como así fue.

The hunt for the assassin unfolds in the two months between the last US elections and the new president’s inauguration. The main action and its collateral actions must be consolidated and executed before this change, which everyone knows will alter everything and render the plan obsolete, because the new president will be a close friend and accomplice of the opposing president. The heads of the US intelligence services will be replaced by others who suit the new president’s interests, as indeed happened.

En ningún momento se mencionan los nombres reales de ningún presidente, ni de ningún director de servicio de inteligencia. Pero los lectores saben desde el primer minuto de quienes se está hablando.  Porque se habla claramente de países, gobiernos y servicios de espionaje.

At no point are the real names of any president or intelligence director mentioned. But readers know from the very first minute who is being discussed. Because it clearly refers to countries, governments, and intelligence services.

Pero los hechos, la filtración de falsos planes de un conflicto para hacer reaccionar al adversario según los propósitos del astuto promotor, la desconfianza más que justificada, los asesinatos más o menos disfrazados, el no fiarse nadie de nadie, sin olvidar la ciber inteligencia, todo eso son hechos magníficamente documentados en La caza del ejecutor.

But the facts—the leaking of fabricated conflict plans designed to provoke the adversary according to the cunning instigator’s purposes, the more than justified distrust, the more or less disguised assassinations, the complete distrust of everyone, not to mention cyber intelligence—all of these are magnificently documented in *The Hunt for the Executioner*.

Engancha. Más que entretener hace pensar en qué mundo vivimos. Un mundo que da miedo, ahora a corto plazo.    

It’s gripping. More than entertaining, it makes you think about the world we live in. A world that is frightening, especially in the short term.
