Let me tell you a story: The snail and the beetle

En una pradera del bosque mágico junto al laguito de los lirios se encontraban un par de animalitos conviviendo entre las charlas surgía una duda quien era el más audaz entre los grillos, saltamontes, escarabajos, conchitas, cien pies moscardones y los caracoles.

In a meadow in the magical forest, next to the lily pond, a pair of little animals were living together, chatting away. A question arose: who was the boldest among the crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, shells, horseflies, and snails.

Encontraron un bello lugar para hacer una especie de competencia, en la entrada del valle de los Olivos entre saetas con flores de teresitas moraditas y margaritas silvestres.

They found a beautiful place to hold a sort of competition, at the entrance to the Valley of the Olives, between saetas with purple teresitas and wild daisies.

Así que el grillo comento estas serán los tres desafíos para determinar quién es el más audaz – ¡carambolas! – ¿Quién se apunta?. Prosiguió.

So the cricket said, these would be the three challenges to determine who was the boldest—»Damn!»—»Who’s up?» He continued.

Tendrán que pasar por tres pruebas:

They’ll have to pass three tests:

Se arrimaron más animalitos para saber quién entraría a esa competencia tan maravillosa y desafiante. Apareció entonces un escarabajo y un caracol haciendo pareja. Entonces nadie comento nada ya que eran los únicos valientes, además ambos tenían cualidades muy diferentes.

More little animals gathered around to see who would enter this wonderful and challenging competition. Then a beetle and a snail appeared, paired up. No one commented on it, as they were the only brave ones, and besides, they both had very different qualities.

Asombrada exclamo una chicharra que andaba por allí ¡puringato! Eso quiero ver yo ¡Je, je, je! Y más intrigados animalitos se iban arrimando. Empezó entonces el escarabajo corría sin parar que su velocidad a veces no pudiese ser visto por los demás – ¡rumiiiiiii!

Amazed, a cicada that was hovering nearby exclaimed, «Puringato! That’s what I want to see!» Hee hee hee! And more intrigued little animals began to gather around. Then the beetle began to run nonstop, so fast that sometimes the others couldn’t see him. «Rummiiiiiii!»

Mientras que el caracol caminaba muy despacio, persistente, sin salirse del camino concentrado en cumplir sus metas, ambos lograron la primera meta ¡recontra chispas que emoción! Pero al llegar al lago de las guitas saltarinas. Tenían ambos que atravesar en una hoja, el escarabajo intento pasar solo por su rapidez, ¡No pudo! se quedó pendiente en la orilla triste y pensativo. Al llegar el caracol con su paso más lento lo miro en la orilla y le dijo, ven por favor, para pasar el rio debemos estar unidos, y el escarabajo sin preguntar se arrimó, y le dijo sabes no tengo idea de cómo pasar el rio.

While the snail walked very slowly, persistently, without leaving the path, focused on achieving his goals, they both achieved the first goal. What excitement! But when they reached the lake of jumping strings, they both had to cross on a leaf. The beetle tried to cross alone because of his speed. He couldn’t! He remained hanging on the shore, sad and thoughtful. When the snail arrived, with his slower pace, he looked at him on the shore and said, «Come please, to cross the river we must be together.» And the beetle, without asking, approached him and said, «You know, I have no idea how to cross the river.»

El escarabajo le dijo que el sí, mira esperemos esa gran hoja flotante que viene a la orilla y la tomamos ya le pondrás un poquito de mi baba que uso para caminar para que ambos quedemos un poco pegaditos a la hoja y ninguno se vaya a caer y te trepas junto conmigo, entonces interrumpió el escarabajo – ¡gran amigo! – Ah ya se y yo con mi rapidez are que las olitas suaves del rio nos lleven más rápido y preciso al dirigirla con mis patitas en combinación suave con mis alas, aremos un gran equipo ¡si! Y el caracol muy contento asistió, entonces realizaron el plan que les quedo a la perfección y salvos y ambos cumplieron su misión.

The beetle said yes, look let’s wait for that big floating leaf that comes to the shore and we’ll take it and you can put a little of my slime that I use to walk so that we both stay a little stuck to the leaf and neither of us will fall and you climb with me, then the beetle interrupted – great friend! – Ah I know and with my speed I will make the soft waves of the river take us faster and more precisely by directing it with my little legs in gentle combination with my wings, we will make a great team yes! And the snail very happy attended, then they carried out the plan that was perfect for them and safe and both fulfilled their mission.

Al llegar con los demás animalitos todos les echaban hurras, pero al preguntar el sr grillo quien de ellos dos era el más audaz, los dos sonrieron juntos, francamente dijo el caracol unido somos mejor, no hay necesidad de competir creo yo, todos tenemos talentos para servir, y eso de ayudarnos mutuamente a nosotros nos hizo feliz. Además, ambos llegaremos a casa a encontrarnos con nuestra familia, para decirles que ya somos de los escarabajos, nuestros nuevos amigos y eso nos trae felicidad.

Upon arriving with the other little animals, everyone cheered them on, but when Mr. Cricket asked who was the boldest of the two, they both smiled together. The snail frankly said, «United we are better. There’s no need to compete, I think. We all have talents to serve, and helping each other made us happy. Besides, we’ll both get home to meet our families, to tell them that we’re now beetles, our new friends, and that brings us happiness.»

El escarabajo dijo a continuación sé que ambos ganamos desde hoy ¡grandes amigos somos! Y platicaremos a nuestras generaciones que si todos nos damos la mano y somos motivo de unión podemos cualquier desafío lograr.

The beetle then said, «I know we both win from today on. We are great friends! And we will tell our generations that if we all join hands and unite, we can overcome any challenge.»

El grillo estuvo de acuerdo y todos los animalitos los felicitaron, entonces algunas gotas de lluvia comenzaron a llegar y cada uno a su familia decidió retornar. En el camino el sr caracol le dijo a su pequeño crio una pequeña lección, no importa si eres el más rápido o el más lento, sino que seas más gentil con los demás, de seguro buenas cosas en este jardín te traerán, vivir con armonía y paz.

The cricket agreed, and all the little animals congratulated them. Then a few drops of rain began to fall, and each decided to return to his family. Along the way, Mr. Snail taught his little snail a little lesson: it doesn’t matter if you are the fastest or the slowest, but be kinder to others. Surely good things will come to you in this garden, and live in harmony and peace.
