NICOLÁS RENDON NOGUERA, ICON OF THE INCLUSION OF THE CARNIVAL OF BARRANQUILLA 2002 IN MIAMI (ii)

2:00 pm de la tarde, tanto en Barranquilla, como en Miami, el sol brilla y su resplandor o tal vez su efecto caluroso en la piel de quienes habitan estás mágicas ciudades, hacen que su caminar pareciera danza. La gente es alegre, vistosa y con una enorme sonrisa, hacen de su amabilidad algo, lindo, extrovertido, muy natural.

2:00 pm in the afternoon, both in Barranquilla and Miami, the sun shines and its radiance or perhaps its warm effect on the skin of those who inhabit these magical cities, make their walk seem like a dance. People are cheerful, showy and with a huge smile, they make something of their kindness, cute, outgoing, very natural.

“Hola, mi vida, ¿cómo estás? Mi nombre es Vanina, soy la mamá de Nicolás Rendon Noguera, Rey Infantil del Carnaval de Barranquilla 2022, en USA”. Dicta el mensaje de voz qué recibí vía WhatsApp, con un acento barranquillero, que la delata; y a mí me emociona y genera confianza, para regresar el saludo.

 «Hello my love how are you? My name is Vanina, I am the mother of Nico, Children’s King of the Barranquilla Carnival 2022, in the USA”. She dictates the voice message that I received via WhatsApp, with a Barranquilla accent, which gives her away; and it excites me and generates confidence, to return the greeting.

¡¡Expresiones como !!Ajá!!, oye!…  …y tú, ¿qué?; pa vé!, ¿qué tal?… hacen que se rompa el hielo y que la conversación sea incluyente, que fluya como si nos conociéramos de toda la vida.

Expressions like !!Aha!!, hey!… …and you, what?; pa vé!, how are you?… they make the ice break and the conversation is inclusive, that it flows as if we had known each other all our lives.

Reconozco que, de Nico, como cariñosamente le dicen, tenía muy poca información, casi nula, pero el único dato que me habían dado, era suficiente para despertar en mí, el interés por “entrevistarlo”: el pequeño, es AUTISTA.

I admit that Nico, as they affectionately call him, had very little information, almost none, but the only information they had given me was enough to arouse in me the interest in «interviewing» him: the little boy is AUTISTIC.

¡¡¡Eran las 3:00 de la tarde para ambos y con un “Hola Nico”!!!, ¿Te gusta la música?  inicio la entrevista y le hago mi primera pregunta en español su madre, Vanina, quien me sirvió de intermediaria y traductora a la vez, le dice: “Amor, ¿Do you like music?…  … Yes, Of course…” Mija” responde él, casi al instante. Mi sorpresa y emoción fue notoria, evidentemente, estaba frente a un niño “especial”, con una personalidad arrolladora.

It was 3:00 in the afternoon for both of them and with a “Hello Nico”!!!, Do you like music? I start the interview and ask him my first question in Spanish. His mother, Vanina, who served as my intermediary and translator at the same time, tells him: “Love, Do you like music?… … Yes, Of course…” Mija” he replies, almost instantly. My surprise and emotion was evident, obviously, I was facing a «special» child, with an overwhelming personality.

Tener un niño especial o con una condición diferente como representante y máxima autoridad infantil en el Carnaval de Barranquilla, en Miami, marca un antes y un después en estas festividades.

Having a special child or with a different condition as the representative and highest child authority in the Barranquilla Carnival, in Miami, marks a before and after in these festivities.

El 2022 pasará a la historia como el año en que un infante de solo 11 años demostró que todo es posible, que los límites solo están en nuestras mentes; que las barreras no existen, pero sobre todo qué la vida siempre será un carnaval, depende desde la óptica que se vea. Recordándonos, además, que la música y el baile siguen siendo el lenguaje universal que une fronteras y derriba barreras…

2022 will go down in history as the year in which an infant of only 11 years old showed that everything is possible, that the limits are only in our minds; that barriers do not exist, but above all that life will always be a carnival, it depends from the point of view that you see it. Reminding us, furthermore, that music and dance continue to be the universal language that unites borders and breaks down barriers…

Diferentes estudios, validan y comprueban que los niños con un diagnóstico de Autismo, Comportamientos, entre otros, tienen mayores posibilidades de involucrarse, comunicarse y relacionarse con otras personas a través de la música: gestos, bailes y cantos, generan efectos positivos en los pequeños.

Different studies validate and prove that children with a diagnosis of Autism, Behaviors, among others, are more likely to get involved, communicate and relate to other people through music: gestures, dances and songs, generate positive effects in children.

Para Zaira Carolina Duarte, directora de “Ability To Help” un centro de apoyo para los padres que tienen hijos diagnosticados con algunas de las condiciones especiales antes mencionadas. El caso de Nicolás – que sigue muy de cerca- es un gran ejemplo a seguir. “Definitivamente hay que seguir apoyando, creando y gestionando este tipo de actividades, que tanto bien les hacen a estos pequeños. Nico, sin lugar a dudas, hoy es un niño más seguro, espontáneo y social”. Así lo afirma Zaida, directora del centro.

For Zaira Carolina Duarte, director of «Ability To Help» a support center for parents who have children diagnosed with some of the special conditions mentioned above. The case of Nicolás – which he follows very closely – is a great example to follow. “Definitely we must continue supporting, creating and managing this type of activities, which do so much good for these little ones. Nico, without a doubt, today is a more confident, spontaneous and social child”. So says Zaida, director of the center.

Terminó la charla con Zaira, y con ella mi jornada laboral del día.  El reloj marca exactamente las 6:38 pm.  Yo, ya de regreso a casa, viendo como cae la tarde, rendida ante el majestuoso sol, para darle paso a la imponente noche y con ella la gran protagonista de la ciudad: LA LUNA de Barranquilla, que tiene una cosa que maravilla.
