Sentado en la terraza de mi casa, en una mecedora que mis abuelos le llaman “mariapalito”. Así como cuando buscamos la forma de distraer la mente lejos de tantas noticias trágicas o de las que anuncian cosas negativas que son el pan de cada día en las redes sociales y en los enlaces comunicativos que están de moda en el mundo de la tecnología. Como suele ocurrir en algunas ocasiones que sales y miras de un lado para el otro y nadie de los vecinos están por ahí talvez por la misma situación en que se encuentra el mundo por los problemas de salud que nos agobia a raíz de esta pandemia o porque simplemente no salen de sus viviendas para conservar el deseo personal de supervivencia.

As usually happens on some occasions when you go out and look from one side to the other and none of the neighbors are there, perhaps due to the same situation the world is in, due to the health problems that overwhelm us as a result of this pandemic or because they simply do not leave their homes to preserve the personal desire for survival.

Quiero indicar que salí a la puerta portando el tapabocas, “por si acás niñas Vega, como solía decir mi abuela Catalina en su record de refranes” y tras haber dejado allá dentro el celular para contemplar el panorama de la calle, mirando los vehículos que pasaban o saludando a quienes por casualidad lo hacen o para responder que no voy a comprar nada a la cantidad de vendedores que desde bien temprano salen a rebuscarse para poder subsistir, volviéndose cansones, pero ajá…es el día a día de ellos y es comprensible la situación. Miré de reojo en una canasta de esas tejidas que me regalaron en San Juan Nepomuceno y conservo para guardar revistas y periódicos, que está localizado cerca al medidor de gas a un lado del jardín de la terraza donde guardo revistas y periódicos diarios para leer en ese lugar como espacio de recreación y observé detenidamente el de La Libertad, debido a que los coloqué estratégicamente porque en abril pasado cumplió ese medio impreso 42 años de fundación.

I looked askance at a basket of those woven fabrics that I was given in San Juan Nepomuceno and I keep to store magazines and newspapers, which is located near the gas meter on one side of the terrace garden where I keep magazines and daily newspapers to read in that place as a recreation space and I carefully observed the one in La Libertad, because I placed them strategically because last April that printed medium completed 42 years of foundation.

Recordé entonces a su inolvidable director, Roberto Esper Rebaje el inquieto “Robertico”, como le solían llamar por cariño los barranquilleros cercanos a él en esta hermosa ciudad llena de historia y Don Roberto como también se le llamaba en otro rango social popularmente, por cariño hace parte de ella. Se me vino a la memoria cuando a él se le dio por brindar a Barranquilla y a la costa una nueva oportunidad informativa que a la postre se uniría al apoyo que el empresario brindaba desde un comienzo a la nueva generación de periodistas.

Al fundar Don Roberto ese medio algo que para muchos representaba una tarea difícil como era competir con El Heraldo y Diario del Caribe, que tenían gran acogida desde hacía años y era una enorme ventaja este paso se convertiría en una hazaña.Recordé como si hubiese sido ayer porque formé parte de la familia de la Libertad, la valentía de una persona popular, venido de las entrañas de sus antepasados que eran gestores y decididos para hacer realidad un sueño y dije con admiración… “Cuando a Robertico se le ocurrió fundar La Libertad”.

Roberto Esper Rebaje, un reconocido e inolvidable empresario de medios de comunicación social de la ciudad, que desde muy niño fue diligente para brindar a Barranquilla y la Costa Caribe lo mejor y quien se inició siguiéndole los pasos a su familia en el negocio de la venta de telas y cuando vio la oportunidad de abrirse paso por sí solo decidió organizar poco a poco una serie de establecimientos que más tarde sería una cadena de supermercados que denominó “Robertico”, como diminutivo a su nombre, haciéndolo famoso de esta manera para que sus paisanos lo llamaran así, lo que disfrutaba cuando lo hacían y con el correr de los años tuvo la ocurrencia en medirse a sacar un periódico de diaria circulación matinal al que denominó La libertad, como complemento a otros medios informativos locales existentes de la temporada; dos matutinos El Heraldo y Diario del Caribe y para llegar mas de cerca a la clase popular.

Roberto Esper Rebaje, a renowned and unforgettable social media entrepreneur in the city, who from a very young age was diligent to provide Barranquilla and the Caribbean Coast with the best and who began following in the footsteps of his family in the sales business of fabrics and when he saw the opportunity to make his way on his own, he decided to gradually organize a series of establishments that would later be a supermarket chain that he called «Robertico», as a diminutive to his name, making him famous in this way so that his paisanos called it that, what he enjoyed when they did it and over the years he had the occurrence in measuring himself to take out a newspaper with daily morning circulation which he called La Libertad, as a complement to other existing local news media of the season; two morning El Heraldo and Diario del Caribe and to get closer to the popular class.

LA LIBERTAD

“Robertico”, quien en su vida realizó con su tesón de emprendedor muchos proyectos siendo un aventajado comerciante de descendencia de una estirpe de luchadores, siempre estuvo atento al avance de la ciudad y en determinadas ocasiones manifestó que sentía ese deseo de que el pueblo tuviera un informativo que llegara con más fuerza a la clase popular, donde se comunicara sin tapujo todos los hechos del orden local, nacional e internacional de ahí que desde la fundación del medio escrito aplicó una de las frases expresadas en el acto inaugural por el entonces Presidente de Colombia, su amigo Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala, hace hoy 42 años: “La Libertad, tribuna sin limitaciones ni reticencias al pensamiento de los colombianos, en donde no existirán retenes ni aduanillas para las ideas”.

«Robertico», who in his life carried out many projects with his determination as an entrepreneur, being an advantageous merchant of descent from a line of fighters, was always attentive to the advancement of the city and on certain occasions he stated that he felt that desire that the people have a news program that would reach the popular class with greater force, where all the facts of the local, national and international order would be communicated openly, hence, since the founding of the written medium, he applied one of the phrases expressed in the opening ceremony by the then President from Colombia, his friend Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala, 42 years ago today: «La Libertad, a platform without limitations or reluctance to the thought of Colombians, where there will be no checkpoints or customs for ideas.»

El momento formaría aún parte de la época de la vieja arenosa, la misma en la que Estercita Forero Celis, la eterna novia de Barranquilla, plasmaba sus cantos a la capital del Atlántico, los tiempos en donde el gran Pacho Galán resaltaba con su orquesta, musicales a la Barranquilla mía, del ñero compa en cuanto a las notas culturales y así cada barranquillero propio o por adopción cultivaba la atención de sus paisanos del patio brillante por lo dorada de la arena, el comercio también tenía un personaje…Roberto Esper Rebaje.

Este hombre desde muy joven, a los 18 años de edad se destacaba por ser solidario con sus coterráneos ofreciendo productos que estuvieran al alcance de sus bolsillos, algo heredado de sus padres y parientes quienes desarrollaban actividades comerciales en los almacenes de telas que habían iniciado años atrás exponiendo artículos con precios especiales para la economía barranquillera de la época.

This man from a very young age, at 18 years of age, stood out for being in solidarity with his countrymen by offering products that were within reach of their pockets, something inherited from his parents and relatives who developed commercial activities in the fabric stores that had started years back exposing articles with special prices for the Barranquilla economy of the time.

“Robertico” veía como ese accionar producía dividendos a quienes las ejercían y poco a poco fue forjando nuevos caminos pese a su joven edad, exponiéndole la idea a quienes eran clientes de la familia, con allegados y amigos; él quería abrirse con nuevos horizontes, pero sus parientes en algunos momentos no tomaban esta idea en serio y fue tanto el emprendimiento surgido que se dedicó a vender telas por su propia cuenta, hasta lograr convencer a la colonia que lo apoyó para satisfacer su ambición.

“Robertico” saw how this action produced dividends for those who exercised it and little by little he forged new paths despite his young age, exposing the idea to those who were clients of the family, with relatives and friends; He wanted to open up new horizons, but at times his relatives did not take this idea seriously and the entrepreneurship emerged so much that he dedicated himself to selling fabrics on his own, until he managed to convince the colony that supported him to satisfy his ambition.

Inició con su primer almacén a quien le puso su nombre en diminutivo, “Robertico”, porque ya con este era famoso y entre la popularidad que se había ganado se hizo amigo de los propietarios y vendedoras del almacén “ La Fé “ ubicado frente al establecimiento de sus progenitores y una de las empleadas de nombre Rosita, vecina del barrio San Roque donde éste vivía; lo puso en contacto con Melba y Rita Rojas convenciéndolas para que lo apoyaran en sus ideales de independencia, por lo que ellas; estas dos mujeres se convirtieron en sus primeras vendedoras.

Fue tan rápido su accionar comercial independiente que su popularidad fue creciendo en la ciudad por la sencillez y el estilo que implantó para acaparar clientes en la zona céntrica entre ellos los barrios San Roque, y Rebolo, por lo que el joven empresario se desenvolvió con facilidad, como “pez en el agua” aprendiendo con prontitud a manejar los negocios.

His independent commercial activity was so fast that his popularity grew in the city due to the simplicity and style that he implemented to capture customers in the downtown area, including the San Roque and Rebolo neighborhoods, so the young businessman got on with ease. , like a “fish in water” learning quickly to manage business.

LA CLAVE DEL ÉXITO / THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Siempre sostuvo que la persistencia es la clave fundamental para alcanzar metas, por lo que logró abrirse paso con varios almacenes que llevaron su mismo nombre con la venta de telas y luego productos de la canasta familiar contribuyendo al abaratamiento de los artículos de primera necesidad familiar. Se organizó de esta manera el 1 de Julio de 1953 la empresa de Textiles “Robertico Ltda”, con capital de noventa mil pesos aportado por sus padres Teófilo Esper, Labibe Rebaje de Esper y él, por supuesto.

Además con su espíritu deportivo Roberto Esper Rebaje, con el apoyo de sus amigos y familiares organizó un equipo de fútbol profesional en representación de Barranquilla denominado “ El Libertad” quien participó nacional e internacionalmente de la mano del Director Técnico, el peruano Arana Cruz, llegando a conquistar este cuadro barranquillero el Campeonato Centroamericano y del Caribe, pero representando al departamento del Atlántico.

Posteriormente el propio Robertico en su afán de seguir proyectando a dicho equipo, viajó a Bogotá para presentarlo ante los miembros representativos de los cuadros nacionales de la llamada Asamblea de la División Mayor del Fútbol Profesional colombiano, Dimayor. Al hacer entrega de los requisitos que para ello requería, se inició el proceso del estudio para el posible ingreso del cuadro La Libertad al balompié colombiano lo que se logró y fue afiliado en 1951.En agradecimiento a la labor que adelantó con su equipo el técnico peruano Arana Cruz, Roberto Esper lo confirmó como su técnico quien se merecía ese honor por haberlo anteriormente sacado avante. Esta noticia de la aceptación del equipo en la Dimayor y la confirmación de su estratega fue publicada en el periódico El Tiempo el 27 y 31 de enero de 1951.

Later, Robertico himself, in his desire to continue projecting said team, traveled to Bogotá to present it to the representative members of the national cadres of the so-called Assembly of the Major Division of Colombian Professional Soccer, Dimayor. Upon delivery of the requisites required for this, the study process began for the possible entry of La Libertad team to Colombian football, which was achieved and was affiliated in 1951. In gratitude for the work carried out with his team by the coach Peruvian Arana Cruz, Roberto Esper confirmed him as his coach who deserved that honor for having previously taken him forward. This news of the acceptance of the team in Dimayor and the confirmation of its strategist was published in the newspaper El Tiempo on January 27 and 31, 1951.

Entre 1956 y 1957 el equipo Libertad de “Robertico” da un salto al profesionalismo deportivo y entre sus hazañas se destaca la actuación del cuadro local frente al equipo Rapid de Viena siendo cónsul de Austria en la ciudad Enrique Zeisel quien logró la realización de este compromiso, encuentro que dejó buenos recuerdos entre los aficionados barranquilleros.

EMPRESARIO DE LA MÚSICA / MUSIC BUSINESSMAN

De esta manera crecía la fama de “Robertico”, el aguerrido barranquillero que su época se convirtió en el personaje más afamado de la ciudad y la costa caribe. Igualmente en ese tiempo los Almacenes Robertico comenzaron a ganar puntos en la ciudadanía con el lema de “Compre como Pobre y Coma como Rico”, el cual penetró socialmente, por la sagacidad de Roberto Esper, quien además de la venta de los productos de telas y de la canasta familiar, alternaban otras acciones sociales, al realizar presentaciones de artistas en la ciudad de reconocida trayectoria mundial.

Likewise at that time, the Robertico Stores began to earn points in the citizenship with the slogan of «Buy like Poor and Eat like Rico», which penetrated socially, due to the sagacity of Roberto Esper, who in addition to the sale of fabric products and the family basket, they alternated other social actions, when they made presentations of artists in the city of recognized world trajectory.

Fue así como aprovechó en una oportunidad la llegada a la ciudad del famoso cantante boricua, el “Anacobero” Daniel Santos quien estaba contratado para actuar un sábado en el Hotel El Prado y en el Jardin Águila, sitios de gran concurrencia local e ingeniándosela, logró con los organizadores del evento que se llevara a cabo la actuación del artista cubano el día domingo, nada más y nada menos que en los Teatros más populares de Barranquilla; “La Bamba” y el “ Victoria” y como gancho Robertico logró que se proyectaran dos películas: “ 4 Desconocidos” y “ El Clamor Humano”. El lleno fue a reventar, todo esto por cortesía de sus almacenes “Robertico”.

De aquí, luego del éxito de haber presentado a Daniel Santos Betancurt que le nació la idea de convertirse en empresario musical y de grandes espectáculos donde logró traer por primera vez a la ciudad a un sinnúmero de artistas de la talla de Celia Cruz, Bienvenido Granda, Nelson Pinedo, es decir; a la orquesta La Sonora Matancera de Cuba en pleno a los que presentó en el desaparecido teatro La Bamba, ubicado en el Barrio San Roque, Calle 30, también conocida como la Avenida Boyacá, posteriormente la calle de las vacas y finalmente la calle 30 y en otros lugares tradicionales pero con el transcurrir del tiempo se retiró de seguir con esta modalidad de los espectáculos ya definitivamente no estaba en lo suyo. Se sentía en un hombre emprendedor y feliz porque le daba la oportunidad a las personas para que lo acompañaran en su empeño de hacer grande sus “travesuras empresariales” y a muchos les dio confianza y empleo. Roberto Esper, una persona que tenía entre ceja y ceja dar mucho más de lo que la gente se imaginaba en materia de proyectos, de propuestas de avanzadas y dado a la convivencia social con su gente, que sirvió de base fundamental para alcanzar lo que se proponía y hacer despertar el interés de los conciudadanos y con su gran madurez, afianzó un gran proyecto que había pensado en los años de juventud, consistente en llegar a todos los pueblos del caribe y de Colombia por medio de informaciones y mensajes para mantenerlos en el día a día, tomó la iniciativa como gancho que a la postre le trajo buenos resultados… servir de vocero de los que no podían conocer lo que sucedía en el país y en el mundo, porque existían cadenas nacionales que emitían noticias fraccionadas de los departamentos y del exterior, pero él quería que Barranquilla y el caribe contara con sus propios voceros informativos que le desmenuzara cada noticia, cada hecho.

Roberto Esper, a person who had between eyebrows and eyebrows to give much more than what people imagined in terms of projects, advanced proposals and given to social coexistence with his people, which served as a fundamental basis to achieve what is proposed and awaken the interest of fellow citizens and with his great maturity, he consolidated a great project that he had thought in his youth, consisting of reaching all the peoples of the Caribbean and Colombia through information and messages to keep them in the day by day, he took the initiative as a hook that ultimately brought him good results.. serve as a spokesperson for those who could not know what was happening in the country and in the world, because there were national channels that broadcast fractional news from the departments and abroad, but he wanted Barranquilla and the Caribbean to have their own news spokespersons who crumble every news, every fact.

Esa necesidad del momento le sirvió para que fuera el artífice de organizar emisoras receptoras. Es decir, se le despertó la idea de poner en práctica local la información y los servicios sociales, contando con el apoyo de su cuñado Nadim Fayad quien atendía con entusiasmo todos sus propósitos porque los veía viables, por lo que logró constituir una cadena radial, convirtiéndose en una excelente pareja en estas lides. Era otra forma más de ayudar a la clase necesitada porque sus mensajes llegarían a varios rincones del país y pudo de esta manera lograr una comunicación ágil e inmediata.

EL SALTO A LOS MEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN /THE JUMP TO THE MEDIA

Es aquí donde nace Roberto Esper como una leyenda dentro del periodismo de Barranquilla porque con su cadena de emisoras en distintas ciudades del país alcanzó su gran propósito de servicios, sin abandonar la labor comercial y social de sus supermercados que sobrevivieron por mucho tiempo. Ambos propósitos contribuyeron a aminorar el desempleo reinante en muchos hogares, porque les dio la oportunidad a muchos ciudadanos de sacar avante a sus familias, sosteniendo sus hogares con productos buenos y baratos.

It is here that Roberto Esper was born as a legend within Barranquilla’s journalism because with his chain of stations in different cities of the country he achieved his great purpose of services, without abandoning the commercial and social work of his supermarkets that survived for a long time. Both purposes contributed to reducing the unemployment prevailing in many households, because it gave many citizens the opportunity to help their families, supporting their homes with good and cheap products.

PROCESOS COMUNICATIVOS / COMMUNICATIVE PROCESSES

Los procesos comunicativos de Roberto Esper Rebaje iniciaron con Radio Libertad la matriz de lo que se convirtió más tarde en una gran cadena de emisoras en Barranquilla. Además fue algo que le sirvió también de satisfacción personal a raíz de su inquietud que como joven tenía para locutor y lo hacía en la emisora “La Voz del Litoral” de su padrino Julián Meléndez y arguyó que si, quien lo llevó a la pila bautismal contaba con una emisora , por qué él no?. Decidió viajar a Bogotá para presentar ante el Ministerio de Comunicaciones de Colombia y cumpliendo con el lleno de requisitos logró alcanzar un sueño anhelado en 1963, acompañado de su inmancable seguidor de ideas, su cuñado Nadim Fayad con el propósito de obtener la licencia, lo que logró sin problema alguno.

Fue así como nació Radio Libertad hasta llegar a un gran cubrimiento extenso hacia la región caribe luego se fue extendiendo hacia Santa Marta con la emisora “Ondas del Caribe” y en Cartagena lo hizo con Emisoras Fuentes. Con el correr de los años adquiere Emisoras Unidas, posteriormente La Fabulosa de Cali, Radio Aeropuerto, Radio Playa Mendoza , Radio Tropical y 1,250, también de Barranquilla. Luego de un considerable tiempo de emprendimiento decisión, con todo ya organizado, contando con equipo humano y las maquinarias apropiadas para su tiraje quien seguiría creciendo en el ámbito de los medios de comunicación, pero en esta ocasión de la prensa escrita, tras haberse reunidos con sus colaboradores y trabajadores de la cadena radial a quienes vinculó de manera indirecta el empresario ahora de la prensa escrita fija una fecha que coincidiera con el cumpleaños de Barranquilla y fue ese 7 de abril de 1979 el día apropiado para fundar el periódico LA LIBERTAD, Roberto Esper Rebaje como su Director, que se ha consolidado circulando por 42 años consecutivos llevando a los hogares caribeños la mayor información, bajo el eslogan: ‘Con la Fuerza de la Verdad’.
