En principio se considera especie en peligro de extinción cuando todos sus representantes corren el riesgo de desaparecer de la Tierra. Así mismo, la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, ente internacional de gran relevancia en el tema advierte que son más de 5.200 especies las que se encuentran en peligro de extinción en la actualidad y estas van en referencia a un 11% de aves, 20% de reptiles, el 34% de peces y 25% de anfibios y mamíferos. Todo esto, debido entre otras causas independientemente para cada especie, a la destrucción y fragmentanción de sus hábitats, el cambio climático, la caza, tráfico ilegal, la introducción de especies exóticas entre otras.
