THE THINKER: AGEISM AND THE PARADOX OF CRUELTY

REFLEXIONES ANTE EL SINDROME DE LA TECNOLOGIA.
Reflections on the Technology Syndrome.
The unfortunate marginalization of us old folks—variously labeled the elderly, seniors, or older adults (a myriad of titles used to mask the reality of time)—has gained significant momentum. We are deemed incapable of generating income or working with vigor, as old age supposedly hinders us and renders us unproductive.
We serve only as companions—with an expiration date clearly in sight—after which it is simply «so long, farewell.»
The old person is valued only as a refuge for the vigorous young when loneliness weighs them down; in those moments, the elder’s presence soothes the soul, and they are welcomed back into the fold.
An old donkey incurs expenses while yielding little profit; when it can no longer even bray, everyone simply waits for the day to haul it off to the grave—and inherit the saddle and the halter.
All these theories seeking «new blood» may well be true, yet they wound the very people who once built the foundations where young people live and work today. What a striking paradox!
Technology has become a stigma for those who—simply because of their age—find themselves lumped into that category and subjected to that treatment.
Yo me resisto aceptar ese despropósito indiscriminado.
I refuse to accept such an indiscriminate and misguided notion.
There is no doubt that technology displaces workers, from the young to the elderly.
The Industrial Revolution displaced manual labor. While this generated economic benefits, it also created unemployment and even hunger.
The message «I no longer need you»—because a machine does the job better—is deeply painful, given that the progress achieved was made possible by the very people now being cast aside. The same thing sometimes happens in a marriage: the material aspect divorces itself from the spiritual.
That is the way of the world: turning to practical solutions that seem cheaper at first but prove more costly in the long run.
I maintain that there are many kinds of wisdom, but I will focus on just two: the technological kind, which mechanizes and materializes the spirit; and the spiritual kind, which humanizes work and can soften those hardened by technology.
Many doctors and thinkers, grounded in scientific knowledge, once denied the existence of God; yet, when confronted with a tangible phenomenon that transcended the laws of known science, they acknowledged the existence of a Higher Being.
Technology is displacing the wisdom that the passage of time once taught us. Who can assure me that artificial intelligence has come solely to help us, rather than to destroy us?
So I ask young people: what will you do when machines surpass human intelligence, and you find yourselves dependent on that ultra-advanced technology?
I am certain you will turn to the elderly for counsel—to those who can breathe spirit back into what has become mechanized and devoid of feeling.
The concern, then, follows as a direct consequence: Have young people considered what will happen when they stop thinking for themselves and must rely on Artificial Intelligence to do the thinking for them?
When that happens, a new breed of «young elderly» will emerge—people unable to live without technology.
This is already happening with mobile phones and calculators.
The former has put an end to family gatherings and even marriages, sometimes acting as an enabler for infidelity—whether in personal relationships or business dealings.
The latter fosters mental laziness.

Technology and artificial intelligence surpass the expectations of the elderly—especially since, from the outset, they render the older person no longer «usefully employed,» as there is no longer time for them to adapt.
The elderly person contributes a life story—their own and that of others—which becomes a manual for living.
True wisdom comes from our own internal machine: the very one that invented technology.
There is nothing wrong with idealizing youth, but it is far more just and beautiful to idealize old age for the remarkable journey it represents and the experience it leaves behind.
Remember, we elders are like forest trees; we watch the young ones sprouting at the base of our roots, providing them with both light and shade so that they, too, may eventually bloom.
This means that, thanks to us, they are alive and ready to inherit that wisdom when the tree finally sheds its leaves in a last farewell—becoming firewood to provide warmth or fertilizer to foster prosperity.
The paradox of cruelty: we are worth more when we die than when we are alive.
