THE FAKE JOURNALIST: REFLECTIONS

El ejercicio del periodismo está sujeto a las mismas reglas de conducta que rigen al médico, al abogado o a cualquier otro profesional.

The practice of journalism is subject to the same rules of conduct that govern physicians, lawyers, or any other professionals.

No obstante, mientras la relación de estos profesionales es, por lo general, de persona a persona, la del periodista tiene una repercusión colectiva. Por ello, una tergiversación o una noticia falsa pueden ocasionar un daño masivo.

However, while the relationship these professionals maintain is generally one-on-one, that of the journalist has a collective impact. Consequently, a distortion or a false news story can cause massive harm.

Algunos ignoran la importancia que tiene el ejercicio del periodismo y de la comunicación social; por eso, meten las patas en lugar de poner en práctica la inteligencia.

Some people fail to grasp the importance of the practice of journalism and social communication; that is why they put their foot in it instead of using their intelligence.

Esto se debe al desconocimiento de que comunicar es una filosofía del saber pensar, inspirada en principios y valores éticos y morales.

This is due to a lack of awareness that communication is a philosophy of knowing how to think, inspired by ethical and moral principles and values.

Cuando no se observan estos principios, nace el escribidor amarillista, especializado en deformar la verdad hasta convertirse en un extorsionista que obtiene ingresos con facilidad.

When these principles are disregarded, the sensationalist scribbler emerges—one who specializes in distorting the truth until transforming into an extortionist who easily turns a profit.

Esta situación se agrava aún más cuando, después de estudiar la carrera —si es que previamente no falsearon la acreditación o el diploma—, se suman posgrados, maestrías y especializaciones para lograr mejores oportunidades laborales.

This situation is further compounded when, after completing their undergraduate studies—assuming they did not falsify their accreditation or diploma in the first place—they add postgraduate degrees, master’s degrees, and specializations in pursuit of better job opportunities.

Quienes lo hacen con el propósito de superarse y buscar la excelencia en todos los sentidos merecen reconocimiento. Pero otros perfeccionan sus conocimientos para delinquir, desarrollar mejores estrategias de chantaje o practicar la suplantación.

Those who do so with the aim of self-improvement and pursuing excellence in every respect deserve recognition. Yet others hone their skills to commit crimes, devise better blackmail strategies, or engage in impersonation.

Ahora, con la inteligencia artificial y sus cada vez más sofisticados avatares, el riesgo es aún mayor.

Now, with artificial intelligence and its increasingly sophisticated avatars, the risk is even greater.

Por ello, resulta imperativo que los organismos y agencias de comunicación revisen con el máximo rigor cada noticia y cada contenido, fortaleciendo sus mecanismos de verificación para que los filtros sean cada vez más eficaces.

Therefore, it is imperative that media organizations and agencies review every news item and piece of content with the utmost rigor, strengthening their verification mechanisms so that their filters become increasingly effective.

Cuando un «periodista» se desvía de la ética, el daño es triple: perjudica a la institución que representa, engaña al público y distorsiona el hecho que motiva su presencia. Lo más curioso es que el hábil cinismo de algunos falsos periodistas ha logrado abrirse tantos espacios que incluso algunos alcanzaron reconocimientos tan prestigiosos como el Premio Pulitzer.

When a «journalist» strays from ethical standards, the damage is threefold: it harms the institution they represent, deceives the public, and distorts the very event they are there to cover. What is most curious is that the cunning cynicism of certain fake journalists has managed to secure so much ground that some have even garnered prestigious honors like the Pulitzer Prize.

Todas estas reflexiones me impulsaron a escribir sobre este tema para exponerlo con el mayor respeto y consideración, porque amo el aprendizaje de la escritura y el noble arte de comunicar.

All these reflections prompted me to write about this subject and present it with the utmost respect and consideration, because I love the process of learning to write and the noble art of communication.

Valoro la comunicación honesta como una forma de fortalecer el espíritu, donde el alma y la inteligencia se unen para honrar la verdad.

I value honest communication as a way to strengthen the spirit, where the soul and the intellect unite to honor the truth.

Por ello he querido recordar algunos casos históricos de fabricación de noticias falsas, como el de Jayson Blair, quien plagió contenidos mientras trabajaba para The New York Times, o el de Stephen Glass, que inventó historias y personajes.

For this reason, I wanted to recall some historical cases of the fabrication of fake news, such as that of Jayson Blair, who plagiarized content while working for *The New York Times*, or that of Stephen Glass, who invented stories and characters.

Existen muchos otros casos de relevancia internacional.

There are many other cases of international significance.

En algunos países también se han conocido episodios de personas que obtuvieron cargos públicos mediante la utilización de títulos o credenciales cuya autenticidad fue posteriormente cuestionada, hechos que evidencian la importancia de reforzar los mecanismos de verificación institucional.

In some countries, there have also been instances of individuals securing public office through the use of degrees or credentials whose authenticity was later called into question—events that highlight the importance of strengthening institutional verification mechanisms.

Cambiemos, por amor a Dios, esa cultura del engaño para honrar esta bella profesión y transformar aquella conocida frase que dice:

For God’s sake, let us change this culture of deception to honor this noble profession and transform that well-known phrase that says:

«Cuando se descubrió que la información se convirtió en un negocio, la verdad dejó de ser importante.»

When it was discovered that information had become a business, the truth ceased to be important.

Yo invito a que aspiremos a que el periodismo se convierta en veedor del origen de la noticia y en notario que autentique la veracidad de sus fuentes.

I urge us to aspire to a journalism that acts as a watchdog over the origins of news and as a notary authenticating the veracity of its sources.
