Aprendí a honrar la vida cuando entendí que la esencia de cada ser es el amor y pude sentir la paz y la grandeza de mi Creador al mirar los ojos de un animal y contemplar los colores de la naturaleza. Hoy, con profundo dolor, miro mi patria dividida entre odios políticos y confrontaciones ideológicas.

I learned to honor life when I understood that the essence of every being is love, and I could feel the peace and grandeur of my Creator by looking into the eyes of an animal and contemplating the colors of nature. Today, with deep sorrow, I look at my homeland divided between political hatreds and ideological confrontations.

La discordia y el fanatismo que caracterizaron al correísmo, tan censurados, ahora se repiten entre quienes apoyan “el nuevo Ecuador”.

En medio de la violencia, el miedo, el racismo y la manipulación, la atención del pueblo se mantiene en lo que parece esencial: el narcotráfico, la delincuencia y borrar los vestigios de los delincuentes que nos gobernaron. Mientras quien ostenta el poder emite decretos y firma acuerdos vendiendo el alma de nuestra tierra.

Una vez más, los medios de comunicación hacen su parte en una sociedad que no lee ni analiza y se deja llevar por la emoción. Infinitos mensajes que gritan “todo sí”, creyendo ciegamente en quien nos ofreció paz y ahora espanta con sus expresiones, porque no solo el que grita es violento, también lo es quien atenta contra la vida por sus intereses personales y entrega la tierra de su patria a intereses geopolíticos del país más poderoso del mundo.

Once again, the media plays its part in a society that doesn’t read or analyze and lets itself be carried away by emotion. Endless messages shouting «all yes,» blindly believing in the one who promised us peace and now frightens with his expressions, because not only the one who shouts is violent, but also the one who attacks life for personal interests and hands over the land of his homeland to the geopolitical interests of the world’s most powerful country.

El Archipiélago de Galápagos es un lugar único en el mundo, uno de los más biodiversos del planeta, donde los animales no le temen al ser humano. Es un ecosistema frágil, un laboratorio natural que nos permite seguir aprendiendo sobre la evolución. Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad, Ecuador tiene el honor y el privilegio de albergarlo en su territorio, y es deber de todos protegerlo. Resulta inaudito que quien le encargamos el poder pretenda convertirlo en blanco de la nueva guerra fría.

The Galápagos Archipelago is a unique place in the world, one of the most biodiverse on the planet, where animals do not fear humans. It is a fragile ecosystem, a natural laboratory that allows us to continue learning about evolution. A Natural Heritage of Humanity, Ecuador has the honor and privilege of hosting it in its territory, and it is everyone’s duty to protect it. It is unthinkable that the one we entrusted with power intends to turn it into a target of the new Cold War.

Observar a los animales tan cerca es una experiencia mágica e indescriptible, una muestra de respeto por la vida y la esperanza de que podemos ser humanos conscientes, capaces de convivir en armonía. Solo pensar en la instalación de una base militar resulta inconcebible; parece que muchos ignoran lo que ello implica: infraestructura, tanques, aviones, submarinos, armamento, presencia humana permanente, ruido, contaminación y muerte en un ecosistema que ya sufre sobrepesca, turismo intensivo y cambio climático.

Observing the animals so closely is a magical and indescribable experience, a display of respect for life and the hope that we can be conscious humans, capable of coexisting in harmony. Just thinking about installing a military base is inconceivable; it seems many ignore what that implies: infrastructure, tanks, planes, submarines, weaponry, permanent human presence, noise, pollution, and death in an ecosystem that already suffers from overfishing, intensive tourism, and climate change.

Escuchar al presidente nombrar Baltra como una de las opciones para instalar bases militares norteamericanas con una impavidez deleznable me heló la sangre: ¡sembrar muerte y destrucción en un santuario de la vida! Refiriéndose a nuestro mayor tesoro como el patio trasero de su casa. Incluso dijo que ya estuvieron ahí en 1945 con total naturalidad.

El pueblo que no recuerda su historia está condenado a repetirla. El resultado de su ocupación en la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue acabar con las especies en Baltra. Ahora cuentan los militares que permanecieron allí que disparaban a ballenas, montaban tortugas y hacían sus prácticas de tiro en las islas. Aún ahora se encuentra allí su basura.

The people who do not remember their history are condemned to repeat it. The result of their occupation in World War II was the extinction of species on Baltra. Amparado en el discurso de la violencia y la inseguridad, ha abierto las puertas a la presencia militar estadounidense en las Islas Galápagos. Lo que hoy son “acuerdos de cooperación” (como el Acuerdo SOFA o los pactos marítimos ratificados con Estados Unidos) solo requieren de un “sí” en la consulta popular para convertirse en una base militar permanente; incluso dijo que puede haber varias bases de varios países que controlen distintos temas y toda la infraestructura necesaria para su funcionamiento.

Las negociaciones de canje de deuda por conservación son otro engaño: se entrega soberanía de zonas protegidas a fundaciones financieras más que conservacionistas, que mercantilizan la vida. Con préstamos a altos intereses con bajos montos de uso real. Y con sus reglas afectan la pesca artesanal y las condiciones de vida de los habitantes locales. Hay amplios análisis por parte de Acción Ecológica Ecuador. Pero claro, eso ni se conoce ni importa. Entregar soberanía para la toma de decisiones, afectar la vida de los ecuatorianos y atentar contra la vida de quienes no tienen voz parece intrascendente. Porque no tenemos el corazón ni la consciencia para mirar más allá de lo que nos muestran quienes nos quieren ignorantes, temerosos y obedientes.

ASAMBLEA CONSTITUYENTE: EL PODER A LA MEDIDA / CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY: POWER TAILOR-MADE

La Constitución de 2008 de Ecuador, destacada por sus derechos humanos y de la naturaleza, tiene también fallas profundas que explican parte de la crisis actual, como el desequilibrio de poderes y la politización de la justicia.

Ecuador’s 2008 Constitution, notable for its human and nature rights, also has deep flaws that explain part of the current crisis, such as the imbalance of powers and the politicization of justice.

Con todo y sus errores, nos dejó una joya que nos hizo únicos en el mundo: reconocer a la naturaleza como sujeto de derechos. Para quienes respetamos y amamos la vida, constituye una esperanza de mantener de alguna manera el equilibrio entre la codicia del ser humano y la destrucción.

Despite its errors, it left us a jewel that made us unique in the world: recognizing nature as a subject of rights. For those of us who respect and love life, it represents a hope to somehow maintain the balance between human greed and destruction.

Nacimos en una tierra prodigiosa y abundante, con condiciones climáticas excepcionales. Contamos con una diversidad impresionante de flora y fauna en un reducido territorio. Y parte de nuestra riqueza hoy se convierte en nuestra mayor amenaza. La explotación minera a gran escala está destruyendo la vida de nuestra madre tierra. ¿En qué momento olvidó el hombre que al no respetar la naturaleza está construyendo su propia destrucción?

We were born in a prodigious and abundant land, with exceptional climatic conditions. We have an impressive diversity of flora and fauna in a small territory. And part of our wealth today becomes our greatest threat. Large-scale mining exploitation is destroying the life of our mother earth. At what point did man forget that by not respecting nature, he is building his own destruction?

El presidente Noboa reabrió el catastro minero en junio de este año y entregó nuevas concesiones, tras siete años de interrupción. Muchas de estas concesiones pertenecen a él y su familia. Es también parte del directorio de la empresa pública minera. ¿Se puede acaso ser juez y parte en un proceso?

President Noboa reopened the mining registry in June of this year and granted new concessions, after seven years of interruption. Many of these concessions belong to him and his family. He is also part of the board of the public mining company. Can one be both judge and party in a process?

Evidentemente, para proteger sus intereses privados, emitió el decreto ejecutivo con el que se prohíbe a las organizaciones sociales o fundaciones desarrollar acciones que busquen paralizar las actividades mineras legales en el país, anulando la voz del pueblo. Luego de la multitudinaria marcha por la defensa del agua en Cuenca, no va a permitir que afecten “sus intereses”.

Evidently, to protect his private interests, he issued an executive decree prohibiting social organizations or foundations from carrying out actions that seek to paralyze legal mining activities in the country, silencing the people’s voice. After the massive march in defense of water in Cuenca, he won’t allow «his interests» to be affected.

¿Acaso no somos capaces de ver esa peligrosa combinación? La naturaleza deja de ser sujeto de derechos, se abre la minería legal a gran escala, quien controla es quien tiene las concesiones mineras; no solo Galápagos, sino todo nuestro sagrado territorio queda expuesto a los intereses personales del mandatario de turno.

Are we not capable of seeing that dangerous combination? Nature ceases to be a subject of rights, large-scale legal mining opens up, the one in control is the one with the mining concessions; not only Galápagos, but our entire sacred territory is exposed to the personal interests of the current leader.

Me surge una inquietud: si se puede expedir decretos sin límites para los intereses personales y para sostener el poder, ¿por qué no se actúa de la misma manera para otros fines?

A concern arises: if decrees can be issued without limits for personal interests and to sustain power, why not act the same way for other purposes?

Ya los ecuatorianos cometieron un error al confiar en un hombre inteligente, con un persuasivo discurso y muchas ansias de poder. Ahora estamos viviendo el resultado. Sin embargo, no hemos aprendido. Siguen creyendo en los discursos inteligentes y las propuestas “salvadoras”. No me compete juzgar ni a Correa ni a Noboa; sin embargo, puedo sentir que el poder causó el mismo efecto en ambos.

Ecuadorians already made a mistake by trusting an intelligent man with a persuasive discourse and great ambitions for power. Now we are living the result. However, we haven’t learned. They continue believing in intelligent discourses and «salvific» proposals. It’s not my place to judge either Correa or Noboa; however, I can feel that power had the same effect on both.

No dudo que los dos fueron jóvenes con buenas intenciones que se perdieron en la obsesión del poder. Somos humanos, y los límites son imperceptibles.

I don’t doubt that both were young men with good intentions who got lost in the obsession with power. We are human, and limits are imperceptible.

Ahora, otro joven intelectual nos dice: “cuando ganemos les voy a decir que vamos a cambiar en la constitución”, mientras él y su equipo nos tiran ideas al aire como delegar la salud del IESS al MSP; ya hizo unos arreglos con la cartera del BIESS, privatización de la educación y la salud, eliminar el estado pluricultural y los derechos de los pueblos originarios. Nos da vacación cuando quieren “fastidiar”, cambia la fecha de pago establecida legalmente para las bonificaciones. Entre algunas otras cosas.

Now, another young intellectual tells us: «when we win, I’ll tell you what we’re going to change in the constitution,» while he and his team throw ideas at us like delegating IESS health to the MSP; he already made some arrangements with the BIESS portfolio, privatization of education and health, eliminating the pluricultural state and the rights of indigenous peoples. Y en este punto otra inquietud: ¿quién va a redactar la nueva carta magna? Si gana el sí, serán miembros de su partido, porque como él dice textual: “es la democracia”. Una constitución sería justa y sabia si fuera creada por intelectuales, científicos, juristas, economistas, representantes sociales, sin filiación política, lo cual es imposible en nuestra sociedad, al menos por ahora.

And at this point, another concern: who will draft the new magna carta? If the yes wins, it will be members of his party, because as he says verbatim: «it’s democracy.» A constitution would be just and wise if created by intellectuals, scientists, jurists, economists, social representatives, without political affiliation, which is impossible in our society, at least for now.

Creer que una nueva constitución resolverá los problemas del país resulta igual de iluso que creer que las bases extranjeras lo harán.

Believing that a new constitution will solve the country’s problems is as naive as believing that foreign bases will.

¿Cómo será “el nuevo Ecuador” con una constitución a su medida? No quiero ni imaginarlo. Podrá construir su proyecto turístico en Olón terminando de talar el manglar y explotar su oro en nuestro territorio, sin ninguna interferencia (para eso abrió el catastro para nuevas concesiones justo cuando el precio del oro empezó a subir). Liderazgo no puede ser sinónimo de dominio. Un presidente sin conciencia ni empatía no guía un país: lo utiliza.

What will «the new Ecuador» be like with a tailor-made constitution? I don’t even want to imagine it. He could build his tourist project in Olón by finishing off the mangrove and exploiting his gold in our territory, without any interference (that’s why he opened the registry for new concessions just when the price of gold started to rise). Leadership cannot be synonymous with domination. A president without consciousness or empathy does not lead a country: he uses it.

Banderas rojas que algunos se niegan a ver, distraídos con la inseguridad y el fanatismo político mientras se fragua un retroceso histórico. El remplazo de la consciencia por la codicia. El derecho a la naturaleza es sagrado, como la vida misma; no es un invento jurídico, es el reconocimiento de que sin ella no existimos. Negarle derechos es negarnos a nosotros mismos. Por respeto y honor a la vida y a nosotros mismos no podemos permitir que una nueva carta magna la pisotee sin reserva por mezquinos intereses.

Red flags that some refuse to see, distracted by insecurity and political fanaticism while a historic setback is forged. The replacement of consciousness with greed. The right to nature is sacred, like life itself; it’s not a legal invention, it’s the recognition that without it, we do not exist. Denying it rights is denying ourselves. Out of respect and honor for life and ourselves, we cannot allow a new magna carta to trample it without reservation for petty interests.

ECUADOR, ENTRE DISCORDIA, MIEDO, MANIPULACIÓN Y ENGAÑO / ECUADOR, BETWEEN DISCORD, FEAR, MANIPULATION, AND DECEPTION

Tristemente, la sociedad ecuatoriana se ha contaminado de la misma ceguera que tanto juzgó: el fanatismo apasionado y violento. La misma discordia sembrada por más de una década, las mismas expresiones, el mismo desprecio y racismo de quienes viven en esta tierra, pero ignoran de dónde vienen y desprecian su origen.

Sadly, Ecuadorian society has been contaminated with the same blindness it so judged: passionate and violent fanaticism. The same discord sown for over a decade, the same expressions, the same contempt and racism from those who live in this land but ignore where they come from and despise their origin.

Soy plenamente consciente del daño que la década perdida ocasionó en mi país en todos los sectores y estratos de la sociedad, pero creo firmemente que en la vida nada queda pendiente y no me corresponde a mí hacer justicia. Y con dolor en el alma puedo decir que bien estamos cosechando la discordia que por tantos años sembraron en nuestros corazones.

I am fully aware of the damage that the lost decade caused in my country across all sectors and strata of society, but I firmly believe that in life, nothing is left pending, and it’s not my place to do justice. And with pain in my soul, I can say that we are reaping the discord that was sown in our hearts for so many years.

Sí, hay delincuencia, pobreza y maldad, pero también hay nobleza, honestidad, amor y bondad.

Yes, there is crime, poverty, and evil, but there is also nobility, honesty, love, and kindness.

Me niego a dejarme llevar por la discordia y el miedo; creo en Dios y prefiero sostenerme en mi fe y defender aquello en lo que creo: LA VIDA. Sé que hace falta cambiar algunas cosas en esa constitución, pero no le daré más poder a quien para mí ha demostrado falta de consciencia, humanidad y empatía.

I refuse to be carried away by discord and fear; I believe in God and prefer to hold onto my faith and defend what I believe in: LIFE. I know that some things in that constitution need to change, but I won’t give more power to someone who, for me, has shown a lack of consciousness, humanity, and empathy.

Darle carta abierta a quien hizo ofertas que no cumplió, miente y dice “una vez que ganemos les diré lo que vamos a cambiar”. Una propuesta oculta, confusa y conveniente para sí mismo y sus intereses.

Giving carte blanche to someone who made offers he didn’t fulfill, lies, and says «once we win, I’ll tell you what we’re going to change.» A hidden, confusing proposal convenient for himself and his interests

Yo voto todo NO porque mi consciencia no me permite confiar en quien “con firmeza” arremete con lo que se le pone en frente, porque para liderar no se requiere solo capacidad, sino también humildad.

I vote all NO because my conscience doesn’t allow me to trust someone who «firmly» attacks whatever stands in his way, because to lead, one needs not only capability but also humility.

Defender Galápagos y defender la vida no es un acto político sino un acto de amor y consciencia. Amo mi patria, amo la tierra que me acogió al nacer y la vida que ella alberga, amo mi pueblo sencillo y de gran corazón. Y desde la Mitad del Mundo, alzo mi voz por la paz, la vida y la unidad. Por nuestra soberanía, la vida y la libertad yo voto todo NO. Porque aprendí a no oír los gritos afuera ni buscar las respuestas en mi mente, sino a escuchar la voz de mi corazón, que es la voz de Dios.

Defending Galápagos and defending life is not a political act but an act of love and consciousness. I love my homeland, I love the land that welcomed me at birth and the life it harbors, I love my simple people with great hearts. And from the Middle of the World, I raise my voice for peace, life, and unity. For our sovereignty, life, and freedom, I vote all NO. Because I learned not to hear the shouts outside nor seek answers in my mind, but to listen to the voice of my heart, which is the voice of God.

Ecuador, vota con consciencia desde el amor, no desde la discordia. ¡Dios nos bendiga!
