Benjamin Appl, nació en junio de 1982 en Ratisbona, Alemania. Es un barítono lírico que hoy ya ha sido conocido virtualmente por el mundo entero, en especial como cantante de lieder.

Benjamin Appl was born in June 1982 in Regensburg, Germany. He is a lyric baritone who has now become virtually world-renowned, especially as a lieder singer.

Ha hecho presentaciones en los más diversos escenarios operísticos del planeta. En 2010 se mudó a Londres –“me cambió la vida”- porque fue entonces que intensificó sus estudios con grandes maestros y decidió dedicar al canto su vida entera. Desde entonces ha dado conciertos, entre muchos sitios, en el Wigmore Hall de la capital británica, en el Festival de Baden-Baden, en Ámsterdam, Hamburgo, Barcelona, Ravinia, Oxford, Edimburgo, Seattle, Viena, Buenos Aires, en la India y en el Museo del Louvre de París. En 2012 recibió el premio especial de la Asociación Schubert y ha tenido el privilegio de interpretar obras escritas para él por maestros de la talla de Kit Armstrong, Marian Ingoldsby, Susan Oswell y Matthias Pintscher, entre tantos más.

He has performed in the most diverse opera venues around the world. In 2010, he moved to London—»it changed my life»—because it was then that he intensified his studies with great maestros and decided to dedicate his entire life to singing. Since then, he has given concerts, among many venues, at Wigmore Hall in the British capital, at the Baden-Baden Festival, in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Barcelona, Ravinia, Oxford, Edinburgh, Seattle, Vienna, Buenos Aires, India, and at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In 2012, he received the Special Prize of the Schubert Association and has had the privilege of performing works written for him by such renowned maestros as Kit Armstrong, Marian Ingoldsby, Susan Oswell, and Matthias Pintscher, among many others.

Mi confesión: lo conocí hace poco -y lo sentí como una bendición-, cuando el canal Film and Art exhibió la película de la BBC Winter Journey, que lo presenta junto al pianista James Baillieu interpretando los veinticuatro lieder “Winterreise” de Schubert; un espectáculo maravilloso, que añade, pues es un documental con el argumento de veinticuatro cantos cortos que tejen una historia, filmado incluyendo escenas bellísimas de ficción, con centro en la cima de la torre Julierpass de Suiza.

My confession: I met him recently—and it felt like a blessing—when the Film and Art channel showed the BBC film Winter Journey, which features him alongside pianist James Baillieu performing Schubert’s 24 lieder «Winterreise»; a wonderful performance, I add, since it’s a documentary with a plot of 24 short songs that weave a story, filmed including beautiful fictional scenes, centered on the top of the Julierpass tower in Switzerland.

¡Ah, y entonces apareció, vigoroso, este deseo de investigar que aún me mueve! Y vengo a descubrir que a Benjamin Appl le apasiona el tango. ¡Otra vez el tango, tantas veces muerto entre nosotros, renaciendo en el espíritu de un alemán que viaja por el mundo!

Ah, and then this vigorous desire to explore, which still moves me, appeared! And I discovered that Benjamin Appl is passionate about tango. Once again, tango, so often dead among us, reborn in the spirit of a German who travels the world!

A Benjamin le llegó una de esas propuestas que, de tan buenas, cuesta creerlas. A él, un reconocido barítono alemán, un mecenas anónimo le convence de viajar a Buenos Aires para escuchar y dejar que penetre en sus emociones el tango.

Benjamin received one of those proposals that, so good it’s hard to believe. A renowned German baritone, an anonymous patron convinced him to travel to Buenos Aires to listen to the tango and let it penetrate his emotions.

En 2020, Appl “vino, vio y venció”.

In 2020, Appl “came, saw, and conquered.”

Visitó todos los lugares típicos, caminó las calles de los barrios clásicos, se juntó a escuchar y luego hasta improvisar -obviamente, por pudor entendible, no dejó nada grabado- junto a conocidos músicos argentinos, comió asado y parrillada, hizo reuniones privadas con bandoneonistas, violinistas y pianistas y… ¡se hizo el milagro!

He visited all the typical places, walked the streets of the classic neighborhoods, gathered to listen and then even improvise – obviously, out of understandable modesty, he didn’t record anything – with well-known Argentine musicians, ate asado and barbacoa, held private meetings with bandoneon players, violinists and pianists and… the miracle happened!

–A través del tango pude conocer la flexibilidad, la improvisación, lo que es tomarse libertades en un género y dejarse llevar por la emoción. En la música alemana, en los lieder, hay poca flexibilidad, hay que respetar siempre normas y cuando se canta, se trata de un balance entre la técnica y la emoción. Pero en el tango nunca está ese equilibrio, porque es tanta la emoción que la técnica queda relegada a un segundo plano. En estos tiempos de división, de nacionalismos y encapsulamientos, creo que el tango es una forma maravillosa, pacífica, de construcción de identidad. Quería lograr que en mi actividad hubiera un cambio; lo encontré y me entusiasma. Ahora me queda seguir aprendiendo.

Through tango, I learned about flexibility, improvisation, what it means to take liberties within a genre and let yourself be carried away by emotion. In German music, in lieder, there’s little flexibility; you always have to respect rules, and when you sing, it’s about a balance between technique and emotion. But in tango, that balance is never there, because there’s so much emotion that technique is relegated to the background. In these times of division, of nationalism, and isolation, I believe tango is a wonderful, peaceful way of building identity. I wanted to bring about change in my work; I found it, and I’m excited about it. Now I just have to keep learning.
