TRUE STORIES: Between heaven and the abyss

Se llamó Rosanna y fue la tercera de seis hermanos, hijos de un matrimonio de clase media de Humboldt, Santa Fe, Argentina, un sastre y cantor melódico y una mujer amante de la música. Nació una soleada tarde, el 27 de abril de 1953.

Her name was Rosanna, the third of six children, born to a middle-class couple from Humboldt, Santa Fe, Argentina: a tailor and melodic singer, and a music-loving woman. She was born on a sunny afternoon, April 27, 1953.

Fue bendecida por la belleza desde siempre, rubia, alta, de largo pelo, ojos celestes y sensual andar. Ya en la adolescencia era el dorado sueño de todos sus compañeros de estudios. Pero salvo casuales intentos de aproximación, sinceros pero breves, ella sentía la intensidad del amor por la música moderna y lo que llamaba “preparación para el destino”: le encantaba la música moderna entonces, leía filosofía oriental y practicaba yoga; además siempre halló tiempo para incorporar otras virtudes: aprendió canto, danza clásica, francés e inglés.

She had always been blessed with beauty: tall, blonde, with long hair, blue eyes, and a sensual gait. Already in her teens, she was the dream of all her classmates. But apart from casual, sincere but brief attempts at approach, she felt the intensity of her love for modern music and what she called «preparation for destiny»: she loved modern music at the time, read Eastern philosophy, and practiced yoga; she also always found time to incorporate other virtues: she learned singing, classical dance, French, and English.

Con el impulso de su padre, Aldo, a los catorce años se presentó como cantante invitada, decidida, audaz, en Canal 19 de Córdoba, en un festival para descubrir nuevas figuras del arte popular. Interpretó cuatro canciones populares, una de ellas en italiano. Como tocada por una vara mágica, esa actuación la ubicó en el primer plano, con un contrato para actuar cuatro años después -ya con mayoría de edad- en el Gran Festival de Río Ceballos, junto a figuras ya consagradas en el folclore, el bolero y arias operísticas famosas. Mientras llegaba el gran día, su padre la integró a un conjunto que había formado -a fin de que se mantuviera activa- y que llamó “Adito y Chany”. Hubo muchas presentaciones mientras corría el tiempo, y después de una espectacular actuación cumpliendo el contrato firmado, un productor muy conocido en la zona, Julio De Martino, la convocó para actuaciones en Buenos Aires.

With the encouragement of her father, Aldo, at fourteen, she appeared as a determined and daring guest singer on Channel 19 in Córdoba, at a festival to discover new figures in folk art. She performed four popular songs, one of them in Italian. As if touched by a magic wand, that performance propelled her to the forefront, with a contract to perform four years later—now of age—at the Grand Festival of Río Ceballos, alongside already established figures in folklore, bolero, and famous operatic arias. While waiting for the big day, her father integrated her into a group he had formed—to keep her active—and called it «Adito y Chany.» There were many performances in the meantime, and after a spectacular performance, fulfilling the contract, a well-known producer in the area, Julio De Martino, invited her to perform in Buenos Aires.

Punto y aparte: ese era su destino, el arte y el crecimiento de la calidad de su voz.

A full stop: that was her destiny, art and the growth of her voice.

Pero a la belleza santafecina la aguardaban sorpresas conmovedoras. Triunfa en el Café San Telmo y su progenitor la incluye en un concurso de voces nuevas organizado por “Grandes valores del tango”, programa televisivo conducido por Juan Carlos Thorry

But moving surprises awaited the beauty from Santa Fe. She triumphed at the Café San Telmo, and her father included her in a contest for new voices organized by «Grandes Valores del Tango,» a television program hosted by Juan Carlos Thorry.

Se detiene un momento ante el primer obstáculo que no esperaba. Sólo ha cantado en su joven vida dos tangos. No era su principal interés, pero, decidida, elige enseguida uno que la enternecía: “Madreselva”. Desde el cielo algo parece ayudarla: logra un éxito impresionante y el canal le ofrece un suculento contrato como profesional. Es cuando miente por primera vez frente a unos reporteros confesando que “su música preferida es el tango canción, genuino, de temáticas amorosas ya sublimadas, que parecen echas para su voz”.

She pauses for a moment before the first obstacle she hadn’t expected. She has only sung two tangos in her young life. It wasn’t her main interest, but, determined, she immediately chooses one that moved her: «Madreselva.» Something seems to help her from heaven: she achieves impressive success, and the channel offers her a lucrative professional contract. That’s when she lies for the first time in front of reporters, confessing that «her favorite music is tango canta, genuine, with already sublimated love themes that seem made for her voice.»

En un abrir y cerrar de ojos, Rosanna movió la brújula y cambió el interés de su vida. Y el tango, en breve tiempo, la cambió a ella.

In the blink of an eye, Rosanna shifted her compass and changed her life’s interest. And tango, in a short time, changed her.

Ya veinteañera, la explosión.

Already in her twenties, the explosion.

Se enamoró de quien sería su marido, el ingeniero Luis Hernández, y de la nueva música a la que se dedicó por completo.

She fell in love with her future husband, engineer Luis Hernández, and with the new music to which she devoted herself completely.

Hizo múltiples giras por su país y actuó en América Latina, incluyendo, como primer destino, a Uruguay y cantó en Estados Unidos, con un repertorio más amplio. Le llovieron contratos y los rechazó todos; en su interior, en su profunda emoción, el regreso era imperativo.

She toured her country multiple times and performed in Latin America, including Uruguay as her first stop, and sang in the United States, with a broader repertoire. Contracts flooded her, and she turned them all down; deep inside, in her deep emotion, a return was imperative.

Donde cantaba y todos la miraban arrobados por aquella alta muchacha de largo pelo rubio, soñadores ojos azules y hermoso cuerpo, era en su tierra natal, a la que regresó feliz.

Where she sang and everyone looked at her, entranced by that tall girl with long blond hair, dreamy blue eyes, and beautiful body, was her homeland, to which she returned happily.

Era su momento de gloria. ¿Había alcanzado su destino y podía sentirse acariciada por él, mientras pensaba, ya preparada, en armar con su novio una familia propia feliz?

It was her moment of glory. Had she reached her destiny and could she feel caressed by it, while she thought, now ready, about starting a happy family of her own with her boyfriend?

Grabó con las orquestas de Luis Stazzo y Raúl Garello, convirtiendo en éxitos Todo es amor, Bajo mi piel, Mi ciudad y mi gente, En el recuerdo, Madreselva y La canción de Buenos Aires, entre otros y actuó en tres películas: Arriba juventud, Siempre fuimos compañeros y Te necesito tanto, amor.

She recorded with the Luis Stazzo and Raúl Garello orchestras, achieving hits such as Todo es amor (Everything Is Love), Bajo mi piel (Under My Skin), Mi ciudad y mi gente (My City and My People), En el memoria (In Memory), Madreselva (Honeysuckle), and La canción de Buenos Aires (The Song of Buenos Aires), among others. She acted in three films: Arriba juventud (Upward Youth), Siempre eran compañeros (We Were Always Companions), and Te quiero tanto, amor (I Need You So Much, Love).

Se casó, muy enamorada, con Luis Hernández y solía sentarse en una mecedora del balcón de su casa de campo de Ton Torcuato, observando, llena de benevolencia, las aves, los árboles, las nubes que no ocultaban el sol…, los hijos que soñaba tener, sintiéndose profundamente feliz.

She married Luis Hernández, deeply in love, and used to sit in a rocking chair on the balcony of their country house in Ton Torcuato, benevolently watching the birds, the trees, the clouds that didn’t hide the sun… the children she dreamed of having, feeling profoundly happy.

Hasta que una nublada tarde, allí mismo, sintió por primera vez una opresión interna que la conmovió y confundió.

Until one cloudy afternoon, right there, she felt for the first time an internal oppression that shocked and confused her.

A partir de allí, aunque ya confirmado, lo negó enfáticamente ante la prensa. Aunque dejó de actuar y quedó recluida en su quinta, por orden de su marido fue aislada para su recuperación.

From then on, although she had confirmed her guilt, she emphatically denied it to the press. Although she stopped performing and remained confined to her villa, on her husband’s orders, she was isolated for recovery.

Rosanna Falaska, a los treinta años de edad, el 20 de febrero de 1983, fue intervenida quirúrgicamente pero murió de cáncer de útero.

Rosanna Falaska, at the age of thirty, on February 20, 1983, underwent surgery but died of uterine cancer.

En su lecho de muerte, sus hermanas le cantaron canciones populares. Ella lo pidió. Fue despedida por una multitud en el panteón de actores de Chacarita y hoy sus restos descansan en un mausoleo levantado en el cementerio de Humboldt, su pueblo natal. Dicen allí que cuando llegó su cuerpo volaron unas palomas blancas que parecían venir del infinito.

On her deathbed, her sisters sang folk songs to her. She asked for them. A crowd sent her farewell at the Chacarita actors’ pantheon, and today her remains rest in a mausoleum in the Humboldt cemetery, her hometown. They say that when her body arrived, white doves flew out, seemingly from infinity.

Nada hay más traicionero que el destino.

There is nothing more treacherous than fate.
