THE THINKER: The possible miracle

Todo comenzó por la iniciativa de un joven chelista centro europeo. Amaba la música, amaba estar y disfrutar rodeado de la naturaleza y se le ocurrió organizar conciertos de música clásica, basada en cuerdas, pero también piano y hasta bandoneones; esos conciertos se desarrollarían durante dos semanas cada año, siendo convocados todos los músicos a quienes apeteciera la iniciativa que no tenía fines económicos.

It all started with the initiative of a young central European cellist. He loved music, he loved being and enjoying being surrounded by nature and it occurred to him to organize concerts of classical music, based on strings, but also piano and even bandoneons; These concerts would take place for two weeks each year, with all musicians who were interested in the initiative, which had no economic purposes, being invited.

El comienzo no fue fácil. El chelista vivía en Finlandia y su primera gestión fue convocar a los municipios de ciudades pequeñas del país, que contemplaran esas condiciones: cercanía con la naturaleza bella -agua, pequeñas elevaciones, bosques y una población ya habituada a la tranquilidad, gentes en las que primara el conocimiento previo, la amabilidad y el respeto por su pequeño paraíso.

The beginning was not easy. The cellist lived in Finland and his first action was to convene the municipalities of small cities in the country, to contemplate these conditions: proximity to beautiful nature – water, small elevations, forests and a population already accustomed to tranquility, people in whom Prior knowledge, kindness and respect for your little paradise prevail.

En realidad, Finlandia ya había pensado en algo similar aunque en unas escalas mayores, más complejas y costosas. Fue el boom de construcciones de centros culturales y congresos, ocurrido a comienzos de la década de 1980.

In reality, Finland had already thought about something similar, although on a larger, more complex and expensive scale. It was the construction boom of cultural centers and conferences, which occurred at the beginning of the 1980s.

Pero antes, al cierre de la década anterior el inquieto chelista obtuvo su premio: el municipio de la ciudad de Kuhmo ofreció su territorio para la experiencia. Su parte Norte bordeaba el mar y unas líneas de agua circulaban por su interior, como si separan a la ciudad de espacios verdes, esplendorosos, con modestas pero sólidas y cómodas casitas familiares, pequeños museos, un gran teatro y varios centros culturales. El segundo obstáculo -¿cuántos músicos de todas partes del mundo podrían apoyar esta movida?- se zanjó rápidamente: cientos de ellos respondieron afirmativamente y, ya desde el inicio, ayudaron a lanzar la aventura del milagro posible: la música, la naturaleza, el respeto general y el interés de los ciudadanos por esta novedad.

But first, at the end of the previous decade, the restless cellist obtained his prize: the municipality of the city of Kuhmo offered its territory for the experience. Its northern part bordered the sea and lines of water circulated through its interior, as if they separated the city from green, splendid spaces, with modest but solid and comfortable family houses, small museums, a large theater and several cultural centers. The second obstacle – how many musicians from all over the world could support this move? – was quickly resolved: hundreds of them responded affirmatively and, from the beginning, helped launch the adventure of the possible miracle: music, nature, general respect and interest of citizens in this novelty.

La cuestión es que ahora, los músicos van rotando, cambian de año a año, muchos no se conocen entre sí, pero practican la tolerancia y el respeto; eligen, cada vez, quien será el director. Y si bien los festivales formales siguen abarcando dos semanas, estos héroes del talento pasan un promedio de setenta días en Kuhmo, presentándose a las personas en la calle, ensayando en grupo de diferente composición, abiertos al pública gratuitamente, en los sitios más insólitos: una zona apropiada del bosque principal, una plaza, la esquina de un museo conocido, el propio teatro principal, sitios tranquilos de concentración popular. Y allí aparecen chelistas, violinistas, pianistas, bandoneonistas, flautistas -a veces son cuatro, a veces ocho o diez- que ensayan realmente y conversan con el público hasta preguntarles que les ha parecido determinado allegro en una nota u otra, hacen chistes y establecen la comunión de todos los valores indispensables.

The thing is that now, the musicians rotate, they change from year to year, many don’t know each other, but they practice tolerance and respect; They choose, each time, who will be the director. And although the formal festivals continue to cover two weeks, these heroes of talent spend an average of seventy days in Kuhmo, presenting themselves to people on the street, rehearsing in groups of different compositions, open to the public for free, in the most unusual places: an appropriate area of ​​the main forest, a square, the corner of a well-known museum, the main theater itself, quiet places of popular gathering. And there appear cellists, violinists, pianists, bandoneon players, flutists – sometimes there are four, sometimes eight or ten – who really rehearse and talk with the audience until they ask them what they thought of a certain allegro in one note or another, they make jokes and establish the communion of all essential values.

La música, elemento esencial, la serena naturaleza, extremadamente cuidada, y un ánimo de reciprocidad con el público que ha producido el milagro: la población nata de Kuhmo creció estas décadas muy significativamente y la ciudad se ha convertido en el principal punto de atracción del turismo internacional; durante esos setenta días, con la gloriosa explosión de la quincena del festival en el teatro, son hoy un ejemplo que Finlandia regala al mundo por el hecho de que a un músico se le ocurrió esta cruzada.

The music, an essential element, the serene nature, extremely cared for, and a spirit of reciprocity with the public that has produced the miracle: the natural population of Kuhmo has grown very significantly in these decades and the city has become the main point of attraction of the international tourism; during those seventy days, with the glorious explosion of the festival fortnight in the theater, are today an example that Finland gives to the world for the fact that a musician came up with this crusade.

En Kuhmo se vive aún mejor que antes y se ha dado especial atención a la influencia de la música, el contacto informal y la benevolencia en los niños que se van desarrollando con una influencia que, en su desarrollo, los hace mejores, más educados, más tolerantes.
