José Maya: Dancing with Mark Rothko

Los grandes bailaores flamencos, creadores de sus propios espectáculos, llevan tiempo rivalizando en escenografías que pongan la nota vanguardista a sus espectáculos. Pero el gran bailaor José Maya con su espectáculo Color sin nombre ha roto todos los moldes anteriores con una originalidad asombrosa.

The great flamenco dancers, creators of their own shows, have been competing for some time in sets that add an avant-garde note to their shows. But the great dancer José Maya with his show Color sin nombre has broken all previous molds with astonishing originality.

Cuál fue la génesis de su idea  de incorporar la abstracción de Mark Rothko, insertada en los aún más oníricos paisajes digitales que avanzan dramáticamente hacia los espectadores, es algo que me inunda de curiosidad. José Maya, Mark Rothko… ¿Quién, cómo, dónde y porqué unió dos potencias, color y movimiento, para ponerlos en escena?

What was the genesis of his idea of ​​incorporating Mark Rothko’s abstraction, inserted into the even more dreamlike digital landscapes that advance dramatically towards viewers, is something that fills me with curiosity. José Maya, Mark Rothko… Who, how, where and why united two powers, color and movement, to put them on stage?

Realmente en el Pavón hemos visto dos grandes espectáculos. Flamenco y el surrealismo que rodea a la abstracción de las obras de Rothko. Esa parte documental es tan poderosa que, sin atreverme a imaginar qué sintieron todos los demás, porque eso depende de la integración mental del onirismo en cada uno, obliga a una doble visión, o atracción. Sé que la idea de José Maya ha sido otra, fusionar danza, música y artes visuales en una experiencia interactiva casi única. Pero creo que José Maya no ha calibrado mucho los efectos de lo que penetra por el ojo humano.

Actually in Pavón we have seen two great shows. Flamenco and the surrealism that surrounds the abstraction of Rothko’s works. That documentary part is so powerful that, without daring to imagine what everyone else felt, because that depends on the mental integration of the dream in each one, it forces a double vision, or attraction. I know that José Maya’s idea has been different, to fuse dance, music and visual arts in an almost unique interactive experience. But I think that José Maya has not greatly calibrated the effects of what penetrates the human eye.

He de reconocer, que no siempre, pero sí en ocasiones, la potencia documental me ha llevado a una inmersión total en mi cultura de lo onírico, en la que la música acompañaba más que el baile, convertido en objeto lejano a pesar de estar en primer plano. Los objetos abstractos de Rothko, situados sabiamente en escenarios de océanos, desiertos, enormes cordilleras, paisajes lunares, ruinas de la Grecia antigua, Poseidón y Zeus, la gran estructura vertical del artista suizo avanzando inexorablemente hacia el público al inicio del espectáculo, me llevaron a aquella Odisea del espacio del gran Kubrick .

I have to admit that not always, but sometimes, the documentary power has led me to a total immersion in my dream culture, in which music accompanied more than dance, converted into a distant object despite being in foreground. Rothko’s abstract objects, wisely placed in settings of oceans, deserts, enormous mountain ranges, lunar landscapes, ruins of ancient Greece, Poseidon and Zeus, the Swiss artist’s large vertical structure advancing inexorably towards the audience at the beginning of the show, took me to that Space Odyssey of the great Kubrick.

 Admiro la gran originalidad y creatividad, nada nueva ni sorprendente, del gran José Maya, en este espectáculo que sin duda tendrá un largo recorrido hacia adelante, porque hacia atrás ya lleva casi dos años, desde la Suma Flamenca 2022. Admiro la creatividad  y el intento de fusionar su baile con Rothko y las escenas dramáticas de mundos oníricos, lo que ha implicado un gran riesgo, no sé si asumido por el artista, de ser absorbido por su propia originalidad.

I admire the great originality and creativity, nothing new or surprising, of the great José Maya, in this show that will undoubtedly have a long journey forward, because it has already been going back almost two years, since Suma Flamenca 2022. I admire the creativity and the attempt to fuse his dance with Rothko and the dramatic scenes of dream worlds, which has implied a great risk, I do not know if assumed by the artist, of being absorbed by his own originality.

Excelente idea, excelente doble espectáculo. Como el gran José Maya ya no tiene nada que demostrar en cuanto a su arte, nos sumerge de pleno en un maravilloso mundo soñado del que ha querido participar junto a sus artistas. Si tengo que seleccionar una escena, en la que él no tome parte, de fusión del arte flamenco en el arte digital y pictórico, que aquí se transforma en volúmenes escultóricos, es la de cante y toque de Rycardo Moreno y Rafael Jiménez Falo. Exquisita.

Excellent idea, excellent double show. Since the great José Maya no longer has anything to prove in terms of his art, he immerses us fully in a wonderful dream world in which he wanted to participate along with his artists. If I have to select a scene, in which he does not take part, of fusion of flamenco art in digital and pictorial art, which here is transformed into sculptural volumes, it is that of singing and playing by Rycardo Moreno and Rafael Jiménez Falo. Exquisite.

El espectáculo flamenco iniciado con los elementos de la Capilla de Rothko, va en  perfecto desarrollo con la apertura total a los espacios infinitos sugeridos por el monumental trabajo digital creado para acompañar y poner en valor las formas cúbicas de este gran artista del expresionismo abstracto que acabó suicidándose aún joven. Algo de ese más allá está inscrito tanto en la danza como en los escenarios oníricos que le acompañan.

The flamenco show, which began with the elements of Rothko’s Chapel, is in perfect development with the total opening to the infinite spaces suggested by the monumental digital work created to accompany and highlight the cubic forms of this great artist of abstract expressionism who ended committing suicide while still young. Something of that beyond is inscribed both in the dance and in the dreamlike scenarios that accompany it.

No se puede reseñar este espectáculo, que conociendo a los artistas, ya presumíamos notable, sin la referencia a esa magnífica unión. El arte digital al servicio del arte abstracto. Y ambos al servicio del Flamenco. Como corresponde.

This show, which knowing the artists, we already presumed remarkable, cannot be reviewed without reference to that magnificent union. Digital art at the service of abstract art. And both at the service of Flamenco. As it matches.

Han faltado datos, como la identidad del contrabajista al servicio del artista suizo. Como la autoría de ese soberbio documental que tanto predomina en la totalidad del espectáculo.

Data has been missing, such as the identity of the double bassist in the service of the Swiss artist. Like the authorship of that superb documentary that so predominates in the entire show.
