THE THINKER: THE GREAT UNCOGNITE

Desde el pasado domingo hay en diversas partes del planeta –particularmente en América Latina- una cierta incomodidad, de esas que se despiertan cuando la mayoría de la población, hasta los supuestos entendidos en política, no explican, fuera de frases hechas, el mero simbolismo de voces aisladas o ninguna idea precisa verificable, lo que ocurrió en Argentina.

Since last Sunday there has been in various parts of the planet – particularly in Latin America – a certain discomfort, the kind that arises when the majority of the population, even the supposed political experts, do not explain, outside of ready-made phrases, the mere symbolism of isolated voices or no verifiable precise idea, what happened in Argentina.

¿Quién es Milei? / Who is Milei?

Creo que poquísimas personas, con honestidad intelectual, podrían responder a esa pregunta. En apenas dos años salió de la nada misma, creó un partido por fuera de toda influencia peronista, radical o de otras corrientes antiguas, presentándose como un amante de la libertad –“libertario” es su vocablo preferido-, un hombre joven, excéntrico que, sobre todo al principio de su inesperada campaña proclamó un pensamiento, en tono desafiante y teatral, que echó encima de los argentinos una mezcla de ideas raras: análisis razonable sobre el futuro económico, baja de la inflación, control fiscal, impulso a la actividad privada, junto a disparates como la dolarización inmediata, la eliminación del Banco Central, la portación particular de armas, la organización de la venta de órganos o la privatización de la enseñanza y la atención de la salud.

I believe that very few people, with intellectual honesty, could answer that question. In just two years he came out of nowhere, he created a party outside of any Peronist, radical or other ancient currents influence, presenting himself as a lover of freedom – «libertarian» is his favorite word -, a young, eccentric man who , especially at the beginning of his unexpected campaign, he proclaimed a thought, in a defiant and theatrical tone, that threw a mixture of strange ideas at the Argentines: reasonable analysis of the economic future, lowering of inflation, fiscal control, boost to activity private, along with absurdities such as immediate dollarization, the elimination of the Central Bank, the private carrying of weapons, the organization of the sale of organs or the privatization of education and health care.

No me extenderé acerca de esta síntesis, porque pocos, muy pocos lectores deben haber estado ajenos a ese ciclón que atravesó al vecino país, desorientando a analistas políticos y, sobre todo a los hacedores de encuestas. Esos mismos lectores que saben que a lo largo de los meses que iban pasando Milei moderó su discurso, corrigió algunas propuestas alarmantes y, por obra y gracia de algún abracadabra terminó obteniendo el apoyo sólido del ex presidente Macri y de la derrotada en las primarias Patricia Bullrich, representante de la coalición Juntos Por el Cambio.

Por supuesto, aun en medio de la incertidumbre que genera, ya que logró resquebrajar al kirchnerismo –asociación para delinquir- y desdibujar lo que quedaba del peronismo tradicional. Condiciones más adecuadas –sobre todo si Argentina al menos se estabiliza- para negociar comercialmente, pues es un mercado con el que hemos tenido una relación de negocios algo sobresaltada pero positiva, y un país que, gobernando por quienes no sean dementes o corruptos, sigue siendo rico y nos conviene una vinculación abierta y con racionalidad.

Good. Should Uruguay care about Milei? Of course, even in the midst of the uncertainty it generates, since it managed to crack Kirchnerism – an association to commit crimes – and blur what was left of traditional Peronism. More appropriate conditions – especially if Argentina at least stabilizes – to negotiate commercially, since it is a market with which we have had a somewhat alarming but positive business relationship, and a country that, governed by those who are not insane or corrupt, continues being rich and an open relationship with rationality suits us.

¿Qué existen riesgos? Teniendo en cuenta el pragmatismo de nuestro actual gobierno no creo que sean desestimulantes y podrán manejarse. Ahora, si el meollo de esto –comercio directo o relaciones en el Mercosur- cae en manos de un gobierno del Frente Amplio, luego de oír declaraciones de sus principales dirigentes, bueno… será un tembladeral y terminaremos pidiendo salvataje a Venezuela, Cuba, Brasil y la enigmática pero peligrosísima China.

What risks exist? Taking into account the pragmatism of our current government, I do not think they will be discouraging and they can be managed. Now, if the core of this – direct trade or relations in Mercosur – falls into the hands of a Frente Amplio government, after hearing statements from its main leaders, well… it will be a quake and we will end up asking for bailout from Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil and the enigmatic but very dangerous China.
