THE THINKER: YOU HAVE TO MOVE THE BOARD

América del Sur, y en particular nuestra región organizada –es una forma irónica de exhibir la realidad- en torno al Mercosur, vive circunstancias que ponen en evidencia unos riesgos que debieran inquietarnos.

Echemos una mirada alrededor: Paraguay, la economía más pequeña de los alrededores, ha dejado claro, con actitudes más que con palabras, que todo le cae bien si el más poderoso vecino, Brasil, está de acuerdo; Chile, con un gobierno de izquierda y problemas internos que lo están haciendo temblar, acaba de aceptar una decisión de Lula, presidente de ese poderoso vecino, aunque, sin embargo, advirtiéndole con claridad y severo tono que hay aspectos de la misma que le son inaceptables: coincide con el movimiento de Brasil de hacer que Venezuela se acerque al grupo sudamericano “para comenzar acciones que permitan normalizar la situación de ese país”, pero no “al precio de barrer bajo la alfombra todas las violaciones a los derechos humanos perpetrados por el régimen de Maduro”; Argentina, que vive en el peor de los caos económicos, sociales y políticos de los últimos setenta años, con un gobierno que pelea muy mal contra la crisis y es eficaz, rabiosamente, en su destartalado fuero interno, ha mostrado al mundo una grosera estupidez más: el caricaturesco presidente Fernández, que en realidad no preside ni una mesa de juego de cartas en su residencia de Olivos, viajó a Caracas–sin conocimiento de quien realmente manda, Cristina, la reina de las vedetes viejas pero dañinas- donde se fotografió con alegría junto a Maduro y declaró que Venezuela era “una democracia real atacada por el imperialismo” y exigió que “cesen todas las sanciones que sobre ella han caído”.

Don’t tell me someone that, in the midst of international confrontations and above all the tension between North Americans and Orientals, the great crossroads is what to do with Venezuela, put together the great lying move that we can strengthen our economies by favoring trade with China! or the United States or pretend, like old drunken liars, to play both sides as if we were facing Haiti and Nigeria and not the most powerful economies and war machines in the world!

Uruguay es un país de territorio escaso, de economía limitada y de producciones acotadas; sin embargo, en todo el planeta hay clientes para lo que podemos ofrecer y desde el punto de vista estratégico –ubicación, estabilidad, desarrollo de la tecnología moderna, etcétera- somos un pequeño pero sabroso plato que nadie despreciaría.

Uruguay is a country with limited territory, a limited economy and limited production; however, all over the planet there are clients for what we can offer and from a strategic point of view – location, stability, development of modern technology, etc. – we are a small but tasty dish that no one would despise.

En otras palabras, depende de la política. Sí señor, de la política. Se resuelva el movimiento diplomático que se resuelva, siempre tendrá más fuerza nuestro empeño contra las previsibles resistencias si el gobierno de turno, cualquiera sea, tiene el apoyo consistente de quienes hayan quedado en la oposición.

In other words, it depends on politics. Yes sir, politics. Whatever the diplomatic movement is resolved, our efforts against foreseeable resistance will always have more strength if the government in power, whatever it may be, has the consistent support of those who have remained in the opposition.

En fin. Complejos asuntos, pero muy cercanos, tóxicos, peligrosos, acerca de los cuales conviene reflexionar y acordar: antes de sacar adelante nuestra idea o antes de bajar la bandera y rendirnos.

Ya pasó una pandemia que nadie imaginó y salvamos el trance. No caigamos ahora, por torpes rencillas internas o ambiciones de poder que enceguecen, en algo que puede contagiar con un virus letal nuestra soberanía y futuro.
