THE THINKER: TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING

Escuchando los argumentos que entre parlamentarios oficialistas y de la oposición han comenzado a atormentar nuestra búsqueda de serenidad, sin pausas y a velocidad de ametralladoras de última generación, se advierte que si algo escasea, o directamente falta en torno al proyecto de Rendición de Cuentas es el entendimiento.

Listening to the arguments between pro-government parliamentarians and those of the opposition that have begun to torment our search for serenity, without pauses and at the speed of state-of-the-art machine guns, we can see that if something is lacking, or directly lacking in relation to the Rendering of Accounts project, it is the understanding.

Obviamente, los choques de información y de ideas son parte de la práctica parlamentaria desde tiempos inmemoriales. Sólo que por aquí estamos, por el tono de las discusiones y hasta la pésima calidad de los discursos, que oscilan entre el infantilismo, la ignorancia insultante, la hipocresía y el fanatismo, al borde de una situación pantanosa y con un futuro inquietante.  

Obviously, clashes of information and ideas have been part of parliamentary practice since time immemorial. Only here we are, due to the tone of the discussions and even the terrible quality of the speeches, which oscillate between childishness, insulting ignorance, hypocrisy and fanaticism, on the verge of a swampy situation and with a disturbing future.

Desde el oficialismo, sólo se propalan adjetivaciones positivas sobre el proyecto, junto a la admisión de su realismo condicionado por la situación internacional tan compleja que vivimos. Ni siquiera el susurro de, “bueno, tal vez podamos modificar esto o aquello”, o “estamos dispuestos a debatir acerca de los recursos para tal cosa”. Quizás, sólo quizás, pueda tomarse por una virtud la tendencia a levantar menos la voz en los entredichos o el intento de usar argumentos en apariencia objetivos y no sencillamente consignas partidarias. Y esto sin olvidar que ese oficialismo es una coalición y algunos socios de la misma han iniciado cierto anadeo que causa dudas sobre la solidez del bloque gubernamental.

From the ruling party, only positive adjectives are spread about the project, together with the admission of its realism conditioned by the complex international situation we are experiencing. Not even the whisper of, “well, maybe we can modify this or that”, or “we’re willing to discuss resources for such”. Perhaps, just perhaps, the tendency to raise one’s voice less in disputes or the attempt to use apparently objective arguments and not simply partisan slogans can be taken as a virtue. And this without forgetting that this ruling party is a coalition and some of its partners have begun a certain wading that causes doubts about the solidity of the government bloc.

Desde la oposición, hay múltiples voces compitiendo por quien halla el rechazo verbal más resonante, ya que no demasiado elaborado, no dejando resquicio alguno para, aunque sea, susurrar “y, qué sé yo… tal cosa está bien intencionada”, o “si, es verdad, se mejoran cuestiones mínimas”, o “hay que considerar que sobreviven problemas económicos que nos exceden como país”. No. Nada parecido. Sólo una catarata de negaciones, rechazos, acusaciones y reclamos en cadena. Todo está mal y entrechocan los discursos a ver cual incluye más cifras de respaldo a esta opinión y más leña al fuego del desentendimiento y, en algunos puntos, de la malevolencia.

From the opposition, there are multiple voices competing for who finds the most resounding verbal rejection, since it is not too elaborate, leaving no room to, even if it is, whisper «and, what do I know… such a thing is well intentioned», or «if , it is true, minimal issues are improved”, or “we must consider that economic problems survive that exceed us as a country”. No. Nothing like that. Just a cataract of denials, rejections, accusations and chain claims. Everything is wrong and the speeches collide to see which one includes more figures of support for this opinion and more fuel to the fire of misunderstanding and, in some points, of malevolence.

Es una campaña prelectoral adelantada y furiosa.

It is an early and furious pre-election campaign.

¿Esto nació de repente, ahora, y nos hizo descubrir el bajísimo nivel de educación, respeto y tolerancia que tenemos en nuestro universo político?

Was this born suddenly, now, and made us discover the very low level of education, respect and tolerance that we have in our political universe?

Lector, no vaya a tomarme por tonto. Esta es, en todo caso, la peor etapa de un deterioro que yo vengo observando desde hace décadas en el país.

Reader, don’t take me for a fool. This is, in any case, the worst stage of a deterioration that I have been observing for decades in the country.

No importa representantes de qué partido elijamos para que guíen nuestro destino. Cada vez empeora su capacidad, su preparación, su actitud de servicio y crece su mero interés por el poder.

It does not matter which party representatives we choose to guide our destiny. Each time his capacity, his preparation, his attitude of service worsens and his mere interest in power grows.

He dicho antes que todo comienza con la educación.

I have said before that everything starts with education.

Y pese a que se conoce mi pensamiento al respecto, voy a recurrir hoy a unas frases del novelista y filósofo noruego Jostein Gaarder: -“Hay que empezar a leer filosofía más temprano. Hay que volver a ser el niño eterno que nunca acaba de crecer, que nunca deja de sorprenderse en la vida y busca dar a luz el pensamiento correcto, pero siempre dispuesto a dudar y cambiar. Por eso digo que es demasiado tarde comenzar a leer filosofía a los veinte años; la natación en los bebés se ha convertido en algo habitual. El fundamento es el mismo: no hay por qué esperar diez años para aprender a nadar, pues la capacidad de hacerlo es innata. La capacidad de asombro ante la existencia también lo es. Pero debe cuidarse con lecturas y experiencias apropiadas. Asombrarse ante la existencia con espíritu benevolente e interés no es algo que se aprende. Es algo que se pierde con la equivocada educación de los niños”.

And despite the fact that my thoughts on the matter are known, today I am going to resort to some phrases from the Norwegian novelist and philosopher Jostein Gaarder: -“You have to start reading philosophy earlier. You have to go back to being the eternal child who never stops growing, who never ceases to be surprised in life and seeks to give birth to the correct thought, but always ready to doubt and change. That is why I say that it is too late to start reading philosophy at the age of twenty; swimming in babies has become commonplace. The principle is the same: there is no reason to wait ten years to learn to swim, because the ability to do so is innate. The ability to wonder at existence is also. But it must be taken care of with appropriate readings and experiences. Being amazed at existence with a benevolent spirit and interest is not something that is learned. It is something that is lost with the wrong education of children.”

Acepto que haya quienes piensen que hay ingenuidad en este filósofo, gran defensor de alimentar como se debe las cualidades innatas de la enorme mayoría de los bebés, claro está sin detener un adecuado proceso de estímulo y orientación al paso de los años.

I accept that there are those who think that there is naivety in this philosopher, a great defender of properly nurturing the innate qualities of the vast majority of babies, of course without stopping an adequate process of stimulation and guidance over the years.

Sin embargo, sólo propongo que cada cual se detenga unos minutos a reflexionar sobre los dichos expuestos, piense en ellos con serenidad, con lejanía emocional y por supuesto con espíritu de libre pensador crítico y, tal vez, cambie de opinión.

However, I only propose that everyone stop for a few minutes to reflect on the sayings exposed, think about them with serenity, with emotional distance and of course with the spirit of a free critical thinker and, perhaps, change your opinion.

Hay un camino a reiniciar aquí. Porque luego de la Rendición de Cuentas –y sus consecuencias- nos espera el un poco destartalado proyecto sobre la educación. Hay que mejorarlo y habrá que aprobarlo. Sin esa reforma, mi querido amigo, estamos perdidos.

There is a way to restart here. Because after the Rendering of Accounts – and its consequences – the somewhat dilapidated project on education awaits us. It has to be improved and it will have to be approved. Without that reform, my dear friend, we are lost.
