CUBA: TRAGEDY AT THE SARATOGA HOTEL

Una fuerte explosión ocurrió en horas de la mañana de este viernes 6 de Mayo en el hotel Saratoga, en La Habana Vieja. En las imágenes disponibles por cortesía de Roberto Garaycoa Fotoreportero y Periodista Oficial cubano, se pueden apreciar los gravísimos destrozos y daños ocasionados en dicha instalación hotelera.

Se trataba de un estallido que habría provocado inclusive la muerte hasta el momento del viernes 6 de máyo, de más de 20 personas así como decenas de heridos que fueron evacuados de emergencia a los Hospitales de la Habana.

Las autoridades informando constantemente luego de acaecido el hecho sobre el estado de los heridos y la situación en donde ocurrió el siniestro, tal como fue la primera información emitida a las 7pm del mismo viernes en que las autoridades de Salud precisaban ya la cantidad de fallecidos como más de 50 hospitalizados entre adultos y menores. Ya como a las 8pm lamentablemente las autoridades informaban que el numero de fallecidos se incrementaba tras haber sido hallados 4 personas más entre los escombros del mítico hotel así mismo comunicaban que por la zona se encontraban 23 edificios afectados.

Ni bien se sucedieron los hechos se comenzó con las labores de rescate en las que intervienen las fuerzas de varios cuerpos especializados, con auxilio de drones y técnica canina, previa a la evaluación de los daños para definir qué tratamiento dar a la estructura del hotel afectado. Así mismo, trascendió que la instalación contigua al hotel era una escuela con 390 alumnos, la misma que fue evacuada de forma oportuna tras la explosión y llevados con sus familiares.

La altivez ha tenido muchos rostros anónimos en estos tiempos de sacrificio, pero lo sucedido en el Hotel Saratoga hizo que toda la nobleza de Cuba se manifestara. Junto a los rescatistas, está el pueblo y, en ese mar de solidaridad, la prensa nacional. ¿Hay que esperar otra cosa de esos profesionales que informan con vocación y responsabilidad, con amor y con riesgo para sus vidas?

Los periodistas saben que tienen una deuda con la verdad y que su sacerdocio va más allá de la vanagloria. En los que reportan no solo va la esperanza, sino la historia de quienes ahora mismo lo dan todo a riesgo de perderlo todo.

Nos sorprende ver, entre el bullicio, a Roberto Garaycoa, un reportero cuyas fotografías han reflejado la Cuba de muchas épocas. A él, ya con sus años de juventud, no se le escapó ni un instante, a pesar de que le temblaba la mano en medio de la tensión y del esfuerzo. El ejemplo de este hombre es uno de tantos, con los cuales hablamos acerca del desastre. Nos acordamos de Jorge Ricardo Massetti, fundador de Prensa Latina, quien a pocos meses de sufrir incomprensiones en la agencia de prensa, no dudó en ir a Playa Girón, fusil y lápiz de por medio, para dar a conocer ante el mundo los pormenores de la primera derrota en América del imperialismo. Toda la gloria del mundo cabe en un grano de maíz, toda la honra, todo el ejemplo de integridad. Junto a Garaycoa están otros jóvenes que también hacen periodismo, codo con codo, en la batalla junto a las ruinas del hotel, en los bancos de sangre, y hospitales.

Solo nos extrañó la actitud de quien en medio de todo nada más atinó a mencionar el caso de los periodistas de Alma Máter. Según su parecer, ellos pudieran estar haciendo reportes en ese instante. Y lamentó y culpó a las autoridades y a una mala decisión. Y no nos queda dudas de la calidad de los compañeros como profesionales, pero lo que sí ponemos en cuestión: ¿qué los detiene a ir hasta la zona de desastre e informar de forma gratuita para las redes sociales o los medios?. Seguro muchos de ellos lo están haciendo, incluso sin que medie paga ni contrato. ¿Acaso Massetti necesitó un cargo, un empleo, una restitución para volver al periodismo, como hizo en Girón?

La prensa es un ejercicio de seres honrados que deben estar dispuestos a ser transparentes y éticos muy a pesar de las circunstancias. Nadie dijo que sería fácil reportar, comentar, graficar. Sí resulta muy necesario que toda la labor se haga desde el desinterés y el humanismo.

En este momento lo importante no reside en las peleas internas, o los resquemores. Los jóvenes periodistas de Alma Máter tienen la oportunidad de estar junto a la gente, reportar lo duro del suceso. Estoy seguro que lo están haciendo con todas sus armas, sus muros en perfiles, etc. Más allá del resentimiento está el perdón, más allá de las divisiones encontramos un punto común de humanismo, de unión, de perdurable bondad.

Al cierre de la presente edición se confirma que Los muertos por la explosión en el hotel Saratoga subieron a 32, mientras los lesionados suman los 80, informó este sábado la Cruz Roja. Entre los fallecidos se encuentra una turista española, Cristina López-Cerón Ugarte, natural de Viveiro (Lugo). Según el Diario EL MUNDO.
