Migrants

El sábado, en el funeral de Francisco, vimos al que siempre defendió a los migrantes que en su mayoría proceden o bien de la persecución del hambre o bien de la persecución política o de la guerra. Y vimos también a su antítesis: al que expulsa a miles de migrantes de forma violenta y en condiciones infrahumanas acusándolos nada menos que de criminales. Al que pretende construir un resort de lujo en Gaza tras expulsar a los pobres gazatíes  que quedan quién sabe adónde. Al que acaba de bombardear a los hutíes de Yemen, pobre país africano porque se le antoja. ¿Qué pintaba ese señor en el funeral de Francisco? De homenaje a Francisco nada, solo la ocasión de reunirse con gobernantes que según él le besan el trasero.

On Saturday, at Francis’s funeral, we saw the man who always defended migrants, most of whom come either from hunger, political persecution, or war. And we also saw his antithesis: the man who expels thousands of migrants violently and in inhumane conditions, accusing them of being nothing less than criminals. The man who intends to build a luxury resort in Gaza after expelling the poor Gazans who remain who knows where. The man who just bombed the Houthis in Yemen, a poor African country, just because he felt like it. What was that man doing at Francis’s funeral? It wasn’t a tribute to Francis, just the opportunity to meet with leaders who, according to him, kiss his ass.

Pero la pregunta del millón es: ¿Por qué en pleno siglo XXI tienen que migrar millones de personas de países que cuentan con recursos para vivir dignamente? ¿Porqué hay millones de migrantes por hambre, por guerras, por razones políticas o por cambio climático?

But the million-dollar question is: Why, in the 21st century, do millions of people have to migrate from countries that have the resources to live with dignity? Why are there millions of migrants due to hunger, war, political reasons, or climate change?

Como alguna vez dijo Francisco: Por el fracaso de las democracias y la pérdida de valores humanos. Atribuyó a las guerras el mayor fracaso del entendimiento humano.

As Francis once said: Because of the failure of democracies and the loss of human values. He attributed wars to the greatest failure of human understanding.

Los humanos, ¿no hemos aprendido nada de las guerras pasadas, de los abusos del pasado, de las consecuencias de malas elecciones políticas y más recientemente del negacionismo del cambio climático, -que no debe confundirse con variaciones climáticas-, por intereses perversos?

Have we humans learned nothing from past wars, from past abuses, from the consequences of poor political choices, and, more recently, from climate change denialism—not to be confused with climate variation—due to perverse interests?

La respuesta sería NO. No, porque somos las generaciones peor manipuladas y con mayor eficacia de la Historia. Lo vemos a diario en las redes sociales.

The answer would be NO. No, because we are the worst and most effectively manipulated generations in history. We see it every day on social media.

España por su situación geográfica al sur de Europa y a un paso del norte de África, con sus costas bañadas por el mar Mediterráneo y por el Océano Atlántico que se comunican en nuestro territorio mediante el estrecho de Gibraltar, es testigo de las migraciones procedentes de varios países del continente africano manipuladas por organizaciones mafiosas que parece que nadie es capaz de detener, en condiciones tan precarias que muchos pierden la vida en el intento, convirtiendo al mar sobre todo, pero también a un rincón del océano en una tumba, testimonio del fracaso de lo que hablábamos antes. Raramente llegan en familia, llegan hombres solos, mujeres solas o acompañadas por bebés que a veces no son suyos, embarazadas por los mafiosos en el largo transcurso del trágico y esperanzador viaje, menores no acompañados… es la fórmula aprendida para facilitar la acogida de los que logran llegar.

Due to its geographical location in southern Europe and a stone’s throw from North Africa, with its coasts bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean connected to our territory by the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain witnesses migrations from various African countries manipulated by mafia organizations that no one seems able to stop. These migrations occur in such precarious conditions that many lose their lives in the attempt, turning the sea above all, but also a corner of the ocean, into a grave, a testament to the failure of what we were talking about earlier. They rarely arrive as families; they arrive as single men, single women, or accompanied by babies who are sometimes not their own, women impregnated by mafia members during the long, tragic and hopeful journey, unaccompanied minors… this is the formula learned to facilitate the reception of those who manage to arrive.

Y ¿de dónde llegan estas pobres gentes desesperadas? Generalmente de países con muchos recursos, no olvidemos que el continente africano es el más rico del mundo en minerales de todo tipo y otras materias primas.

And where do these poor, desperate people come from? Generally from countries with abundant resources. Let’s not forget that the African continent is the richest in the world in minerals of all kinds and other raw materials.

Entonces ¿por qué migran? Porque como bien dijo el profesor y escritor africanista marroquí  Patrick Chabal, fallecido en  el Reino Unido en 2014, las “independencias o cambio de dependencias han creado una situación perversa de enriquecimiento sin desarrollo”. Así es, enriquecimiento de gobiernos corruptos y sus adláteres, sin desarrollo para los pueblos, gracias cómo no a la interesada connivencia de los antiguos colonizadores y otros depredadores añadidos al olor de las ganancias.

So why do they migrate? Because, as the Moroccan professor and Africanist writer Patrick Chabal, who died in the United Kingdom in 2014, rightly said, «independence or changes in dependence have created a perverse situation of enrichment without development.» That’s right, enrichment for corrupt governments and their cronies, without development for the people, thanks, of course, to the self-interested connivance of former colonizers and other predators, adding to the scent of profit.

Esta es la cruda realidad.

This is the harsh reality.

Pero siguiendo con España que es lo que mejor conozco, hay otras fuentes de inmigración sin salir de Europa. Grandes colectivos de rumanos, polacos y rusos. ¿Hace falta explicar la razón de porqué migran individuos de estas nacionalidades? Los rumanos porque en su país los salarios son mínimos y los precios como en el corazón de Europa. Obviamente la gente no puede vivir. De Rusia y Polonia por razones políticas entre otras. Añado, una buena parte de rusos y polacos son universitarios, gente preparada, que aquí entre otros oficios ejercen de pintores, electricistas, soladores, alicatadores, etc.

But sticking with Spain, which is what I know best, there are other sources of immigration without leaving Europe. Large groups of Romanians, Poles, and Russians. Do I need to explain why individuals of these nationalities migrate? The Romanians because in their country wages are minimal and prices are like those in the heart of Europe. Obviously, people can’t live. From Russia and Poland for political reasons, among others. I’d add that a good portion of Russians and Poles are university graduates, educated people, who here, among other jobs, work as painters, electricians, tilers, etc.

Y nos queda América Latina, la que más nos duele. Los tiempos y las razones son diversos. En tiempos de la dictadura militar  España se llenó de argentinos, también gente preparada, entre otros muchos psicólogos, a alguno tuve ocasión de conocer. Del Chile de Pinochet otro tanto de lo mismo, los que tuvieron la suerte de poder salir. Cubanos desde hace años no dejan de llegar cuando pueden. Posteriormente y por razones muy parecidas, venezolanos. Los nicaragüenses tanto por razones políticas como por enormes carencias. De todos ellos tengo gente muy cercana, testimonios de primera mano.

And then there’s Latin America, the one that hurts us the most. The times and the reasons are diverse. During the military dictatorship, Spain was filled with Argentines, also educated people, among many other psychologists, some of whom I had the opportunity to meet. The same thing happened in Pinochet’s Chile, for those lucky enough to be able to leave. Cubans have been arriving for years when they can. Later, and for very similar reasons, Venezuelans. Nicaraguans, both for political reasons and due to enormous hardships. I have very close friends and firsthand accounts of all of them.

El mayor colectivo procedente de América Latina es el de Colombia, más de medio millón de personas. También conozco sus carencias por testimonios de primera mano, desde las razones de la falta de escolarización, carencia sanitaria, trabajo mal remunerado, etc.

The largest group from Latin America is Colombia, more than half a million people. I also know their hardships from firsthand accounts, from the lack of schooling, poor healthcare, poorly paid work, etc.

Peruanos de un buen abanico de clases sociales. Hondureños, ecuatorianos, etc.

Peruvians from a wide range of social classes. Hondurans, Ecuadorians, etc.

Países todos con recursos más que suficientes para que si estuvieran bien administrados podrían vivir dignamente y contribuir a su desarrollo.

All countries have more than enough resources to allow them, if properly managed, to live with dignity and contribute to their development.

Nadie migra por gusto de su país, su cultura, su entorno, su familia, sus costumbres, dejando hijos atrás en situaciones verdaderamente dramáticas. La gente migra por desesperación, arriesgando la vida en muchas ocasiones.

No one migrates because they want to leave their country, their culture, their environment, their family, their customs, leaving children behind in truly tragic situations. People migrate out of desperation, often risking their lives.

Este es el enorme fracaso de las democracias, que miran a otro lado para tratar de ignorar tal fracaso, como tantas veces denunció Francisco.

This is the enormous failure of democracies, which look the other way to try to ignore such failure, as Francis has so often denounced.
