For centuries, makeup has been a tool that, for many women, meant meeting standards imposed by society: appearing more attractive, younger, or more perfect according to other people’s standards. However, times are changing, and with them, so is our way of relating to this very personal tool. What would happen if we stopped seeing makeup as an obligation and started using it as an act of freedom and empowerment?

There are great women in history who have empowered each other through makeup; Elizabeth Arden (Canadian) who, in 1912, gave her famous red lipstick to the suffragettes as a symbol of solidarity, and marched with them down Fifth Avenue in New York, defending gender equality. Until that date, painting red lips (and even putting on makeup) was related to prostitution, immorality and a bad life. From that day on, its use became normalized and popular among women as a symbol of emancipation. From then on they understood that makeup was a tool to promote and express their feminine identity. Anita Roddick (English), a pioneer in natural cosmetics, founded The Body Shop after offering 100% natural products in recyclable packaging since the 1970s, and Helena Rubenstein (Polish) created a true empire, proving to be a visionary and entrepreneurial woman. She opened her first beauty institute in 1902 and hers are some of the most revolutionary cosmetic inventions, such as waterproof mascara or the classification of skin types.

It is clear that external beauty cannot exist without internal beauty and in that sense, although throughout our lives we have been told that makeup is superficial, it is actually an ally in female empowerment.

Está claro que la belleza exterior no puede existir sin la interior y en ese sentido, aunque a lo largo de toda nuestra vida nos han dicho que el maquillaje es superficial en realidad es un aliado en el empoderamiento femenino.

Empowerment is a choice, and choosing to wear makeup for yourself is a revolutionary act. It is a way to take control over your narrative, to rediscover yourself and to reconnect with the woman you really are. Because, in the end, empowerment begins when you decide which rules to follow and which to break.

Empoderarse es elegir, y elegir maquillarte para ti misma es un acto revolucionario. Es una forma de tomar el control sobre tu narrativa, de redescubrirte y de reconectar con la mujer que realmente eres. Porque, al final, el empoderamiento empieza cuando decides qué reglas seguir y cuáles romper.
