THE THINKER: A COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION

De todos los intercambios que se vienen realizando entre el gobierno que llega y el que se va, según parece en buenos términos para definir la transición política, el que más me interesa es el que abarca los temas de la educación: cambio o ratificación de algunas autoridades, cuestiones económicas y, como inevitable consecuencia, estructurales, mejoras en la formación de docentes y, punto esencial, programas de enseñanza que se distribuirán entre Primaria, Secundaria y el nivel terciario de las universidades y organismos especializados.

Of all the exchanges that have been taking place between the government that arrives and the one that leaves, which seem to be on good terms to define the political transition, the one that interests me the most is the one that covers the issues of education: change or ratification of some authorities, economic and, as an inevitable consequence, structural issues, improvements in teacher training and, essential point, teaching programs that will be distributed between Primary, Secondary and the tertiary level of universities and specialized organizations.

¿Alguien volverá a debatir sobre la invisible reforma educativa propalada en un palabrerío confuso luego de años de encuentros y desencuentros políticos? No creo. Sería el colmo.

Will anyone debate again the invisible educational reform spread in confusing verbiage after years of political meetings and disagreements? I don’t think so. It would be the last straw.

Entonces, la esperanza de algo bueno para esta etapa reposa en que haya la suficiente valentía para encarar problemas. El primero de ellos se encuentra en una contradicción sencilla: al mismo tiempo que el país necesita mejorar, con planes progresivos, el imponente avance de la tecnología -ahora con la novedad sobredimensionada de la inteligencia artificial, un disco rayado que gira a gran velocidad, planteando día por medio algunas novedades que semejan ciencia ficción- al mismo tiempo que crece la cantidad de niños y adolescentes que no saben leer ni escribir correctamente y, por tanto, no prospera su pensamiento ni sus ideas hasta sobre lo más elemental concebible.

So, the hope for something good at this stage rests on having enough courage to face problems. The first of them is found in a simple contradiction: at the same time that the country needs to improve, with progressive plans, the impressive advance of technology – now with the oversized novelty of artificial intelligence, a broken record that spins at high speed, proposing every other day some novelties that resemble science fiction – at the same time that the number of children and adolescents who do not know how to read or write correctly grows and, therefore, their thinking or ideas do not prosper, even on the most basic conceivable thing.

Por supuesto que es posible cambiar esta realidad; sólo que no advierto, en las escasas expresiones públicas de quienes están en ello, claridad sino más bien oscuridades en el palabrerío que se alcanza a entender. Es más: me siento tentado a creer que, en vez de ir hacia una educación integrada, seguiremos con programas despegados entre sí y las habituales, desde hace décadas, diferencias entre Primaria, Secundaria y la educación superior.

Of course it is possible to change this reality; Only that I do not notice, in the few public expressions of those who are involved in it, clarity but rather obscurities in the verbiage that can be understood. What’s more: I am tempted to believe that, instead of moving towards integrated education, we will continue with programs that are separated from each other and the usual differences, for decades, between Primary, Secondary and higher education.

Como suelo incurrir en ciertas influencias, recordaré en esto, una vez más, a Aldous Huxley, que escribió cosas muy interesantes sobre la educación integral. Por ejemplo: “Este ideal exige que la educación, como plan general que incorpora las peculiaridades de las edades, exige ser considerada en función de los problemas humanos fundamentales. ¿Quiénes somos? ¿Qué es la naturaleza humana? ¿Cómo deberíamos estar vinculados al planeta en que vivimos? ¿Cómo hemos de vivir juntos de una manera satisfactoria, tolerante, constructiva y solidaria? ¿Cómo habremos de resolver nuestras potencialidades individuales? ¿Cuál es la relación entre naturaleza y los veloces avances científicos y, en particular, tecnológicos?”. El asunto es construir puentes desde la primera infancia hasta la inclusión en el nivel terciario. Y no olvidemos el lenguaje catastrófico de la mayoría de textos elegidos. Por ejemplo, no tenemos por el momento una forma verbal que exprese la conjunción del hecho científico o tecnológico con nuestra experiencia directa”.

As I tend to incur certain influences, I will remember in this, once again, Aldous Huxley, who wrote very interesting things about comprehensive education. For example: “This ideal demands that education, as a general plan that incorporates the peculiarities of the ages, demands to be considered in terms of fundamental human problems. Who are we? What is human nature? How should we be linked to the planet we live on? How are we to live together in a satisfactory, tolerant, constructive and supportive way? How are we to resolve our individual potentialities? What is the relationship between nature and rapid scientific and, in particular, technological advances?” The point is to build bridges from early childhood to inclusion at the tertiary level. And let’s not forget the catastrophic language of most of the chosen texts. For example, at the moment we do not have a verbal form that expresses the conjunction of scientific or technological fact with our direct experience.”

Esto lo dijo durante unas conferencias en universidades norteamericanas en 1959. Por lo que yo entiendo, en tantas décadas nada ha cambiado de esa propuesta principal, quizás generalizadora por la necesidad de síntesis, pero en esencia una poderosa aspiración.

He said this during lectures at North American universities in 1959. From what I understand, in so many decades nothing has changed from that main proposal, perhaps generalizing due to the need for synthesis, but in essence a powerful aspiration.
