THE THINKER: THE KINGDOM OF CONFUSION

En un acelerado proceso, que alcanzará características sorprendentes –por ser delicadas y casi con seguridad desagradables-, los políticos ya iniciaron la arremetida de su malón de vocinglería barata con un pensamiento excluyente: las próximas elecciones nacionales.

In an accelerated process, which will reach surprising characteristics – for being delicate and almost certainly unpleasant – the politicians have already begun the attack of their malon of cheap talk with an exclusive thought: the next national elections.

Si uno se tomara el trabajo de detallar los contenidos de los discursos, ya electos casi todos los candidatos para las internas, trabajo que supondría acercarse sin advertirlo a la estupidez, repararía de inmediato que la mayor parte de sus contenidos, -aun considerando una exasperante alusión del oficialismo acerca del cumplimiento de sus promesas y la certeza de que el camino recorrido justificaría su represo al poder- es un palabrerío que choca con la agresividad de la oposición diciendo y previendo, sobre las mismas cuestiones y sus perspectivas, todo lo contrario.

If one took the trouble to detail the contents of the speeches, almost all of the candidates for the internal elections had already been elected, work that would mean inadvertently approaching stupidity, one would immediately notice that most of their contents, – even considering an exasperating allusion by the ruling party about the fulfillment of its promises and the certainty that the path taken would justify its imprisonment in power – is a verbiage that clashes with the aggressiveness of the opposition saying and foreseeing, on the same issues and their perspectives, just the opposite.

En el centro de este irrespirable aire que asfixia la masa cerebral de cualquier ser humano medianamente inteligente, y no preso de dogmas o fanatismos que no tienen solución, está, cuasi absorta, la ciudadanía. Y quiero aclarar que hablo de las personas pensantes y sujetas de todos los asuntos que desde hace décadas perjudican a la sociedad y que, gobierno tras gobierno, se maquillan, a veces por imprevisibles condiciones exteriores favorables, o se disimulan entre una vergonzante verbosidad y culminan este triste proceso dislocando todo intento de nosotros, los futuros votantes, de entender algo sin pensar que nos ha alcanzado una inesperada discapacidad.

At the center of this unbreathable air that suffocates the brain mass of any moderately intelligent human being, and not a prisoner of dogmas or fanaticisms that have no solution, is, almost absorbed, the citizenry. And I want to clarify that I am talking about the thinking people who are subject to all the issues that have been harming society for decades and that, government after government, are disguised, sometimes due to unforeseeable favorable external conditions, or are hidden in shameful verbosity and culminate this sad process dislocating all attempts by us, future voters, to understand something without thinking that an unexpected disability has overtaken us.

A esta altura, para evitar confusiones, describo con mano firme qué hay en el estante donde están los paquetes perjudiciales: una suerte de trabalenguas anárquico llamado “transformación educativa”; un proyecto de reforma de la Seguridad Social que muy pocos contribuyentes serían capaces, hoy, de describir y entender su extensión y consecuencias inevitables sobre la sociedad; la pobreza y el desempleo que sigue creciendo; la inseguridad que instala torres de control y acción por todas partes; una justicia en estado de tensión interna no recomendable; una crisis de vivienda que sigue sorteando, como pícaro futbolista hábil, toda promesa, todo plan y todo anuncio de solución que alguien haya hecho en los últimos veinte años; un sistema de salud cada día menos eficiente y menos respetuoso de los derechos de sus afiliados –los verdaderos dueños- especialmente en el mutualismo y también en los servicios de la Salud Pública.

At this point, to avoid confusion, I describe with a firm hand what is on the shelf where the harmful packages are: a kind of anarchic tongue twister called “educational transformation”; a Social Security reform project that very few taxpayers would be able, today, to describe and understand its extension and inevitable consequences on society; poverty and unemployment that continues to grow; the insecurity that installs control and action towers everywhere; a justice in a state of internal tension that is not advisable; a housing crisis that continues to avoid, like a skilled footballer, every promise, every plan and every announcement of a solution that anyone has made in the last twenty years; a health system that is increasingly less efficient and less respectful of the rights of its members – the true owners – especially in mutualism and also in Public Health services.

Dicho con claridad: un panorama, trazado en dirección a las elecciones del año que viene, oscuro e inasible como una sombra, y desconocido, en lenguaje simple y claro, por la gran mayoría de los ciudadanos.

Said clearly: a panorama, drawn in the direction of next year’s elections, dark and elusive like a shadow, and unknown, in simple and clear language, by the vast majority of citizens.

Acá, por ahora, no se advierte la posibilidad que surja un Milei –un outsider con capacidad de enamorar votantes, cuyo futuro es un gran signo de interrogación-; por lo tanto, con otros nombres, vamos a tener más de lo mismo, de lo que sí conocemos desde hace décadas: ácidos contrapuntos dignos de la época de los viejos payadores; multitud de promesas tiradas al aire sobre la gente como papelitos de carnaval; y una sociedad donde crecerán dos corrientes aterradoras: el fanatismo dogmático y enardecido y aquellos que, sin caer en ese extremo, tropezarán constantemente en la repetición de lo ya dicho antes.

Here, for now, there is no possibility of a Milei emerging – an outsider with the capacity to attract voters, whose future is a big question mark; Therefore, with other names, we are going to have more of the same, of what we have known for decades: acid counterpoints worthy of the time of the old payadores; multitude of promises thrown into the air over people like carnival pieces of paper; and a society where two terrifying currents will grow: dogmatic and inflamed fanaticism and those who, without falling into that extreme, will constantly stumble in the repetition of what has already been said before.

Habrá en la “fila de identificación”, una renovación de caras. El problema es que no la acompañe una honesta y realista renovación de ideas y obras.

There will be a renewal of faces in the “identification line.” The problem is that it is not accompanied by an honest and realistic renewal of ideas and works.

Por ahora, cumpliré con mi obligación constitucional de votar. Ya veré a quiénes y por qué o si me refugio en el voto en blanco o anulado. Pero no me interesa, por razones éticas, morales, disimular mi escepticismo.

For now, I will fulfill my constitutional obligation to vote. I’ll see who and why or if I take refuge in the blank or annulled vote. But I am not interested, for ethical or moral reasons, in hiding my skepticism.
