Madrid Pride, inclusive Olympic Games at the French Institute

Tenía en cartera para esta semana otro tema para Culturas del Mundo. Pero tras asistir a este evento, además de no poder posponerse, ¿qué mejor tema que el de la inclusión en el deporte en unos Juegos Olímpicos, en medio de la semana del Orgullo LGTBI en Madrid?

I had another topic for World Cultures in my portfolio for this week. But after attending this event, in addition to not being able to postpone it, what better topic than inclusion in sport in the Olympic Games, in the middle of LGTBI Pride week in Madrid?

No puedo remediarlo. Cada vez me siento más francófona, y me debato entre la admiración hacia ellos por poner siempre a Francia en la vanguardia protagonista de todo lo que sucede en el mundo, y el sentimiento de impotencia de pertenecer a un país, España, que con muchas más razones para poner en práctica esta estrategia, se dedica por el contrario a destruir lo mejor de su historia.

I can’t help it. I feel more and more French-speaking, and I am torn between admiration for them for always putting France at the forefront of everything that happens in the world, and the feeling of helplessness of belonging to a country, Spain, which with many more reasons to put this strategy into practice, it is instead dedicated to destroying the best of its history.

El 1 de julio nos reunimos primero en el auditorio del Instituto Francés de Madrid y después en sus patios, alto y bajo para celebrar una velada sobre “Igualdad, Creatividad y Diversidad”, por una parte en el marco de los actos del Orgullo Gay que se celebran esta semana en Madrid, insertándolo en la inclusión LGTBIQ+ en el deporte, todo ello de cara a los inminentes Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de verano a celebrar en París desde finales de julio.

On July 1 we met first in the auditorium of the French Institute of Madrid and then in its patios, upper and lower to celebrate an evening on “Equality, Creativity and Diversity”, on the one hand within the framework of the Gay Pride events that They are held this week in Madrid, inserting it into LGTBIQ+ inclusion in sport, all in view of the imminent summer Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Paris from the end of July.

Interesantísima la mesa redonda moderada por la periodista deportiva argentina Samantha Chocrón, con los participantes, tres deportistas de élite y un fotógrafo inmerso en derechos humanos y justicia social.

La capitana de la selección española de fútbol, Ivana Andrés Sanz,  el jugador de waterpolo y diputado nacional por el PSOE, Víctor Gutiérrez, la jugadora de baloncesto Laura Nicholls y el fotógrafo francés Emilien Buffard, afincado en Argentina, coordinador de la exposición “Sport Friendly”, hablaron de esa difícil inclusión de los “diferentes”  en el deporte. Mucho más asertivas las chicas, sobre todo Laura Nicholls, tan segura de sí misma, de sus valores deportivos y de su persona, con una autoestima sin fisuras; no creo que le importen mucho los comentarios de los homófobos,  a los que personalmente considero un producto residual de una sociedad obsoleta, nostálgicos e ignorantes. Lo mismo aplico a Ivana Andrés.

The girls are much more assertive, especially Laura Nicholls, so sure of herself, of her sporting values ​​and of her person, with seamless self-esteem; I don’t think he cares much about the comments of homophobes, who I personally consider a residual product of an obsolete society, nostalgic and ignorant. The same applies to Ivana Andrés.

Víctor Gutiérrez, un gigante de 1,95 metros y 110 kilos de peso, desde 2021 Secretario  de Políticas LGTBI del PSOE y diputado desde 2023. Un tipo sin miedos ni complejos, ¿porqué habría de tenerlos? habló con mucho acierto, pero en clave política; creo que da demasiada importancia a los retrógrados en vía de extinción, pese a la presencia de extremas derechas en Europa, porque la ciencia es lo que es, va más allá de cualquier ideología y quién hoy en día no sepa que nadie elige ni decide su orientación sexual, ya que es una cuestión de genética y  regiones del cerebro, es que está muy lejos del mundo en que vivimos. A ver, ¿es que no hay homosexuales ni lesbianas de derechas? ¡Venga ya!   Es cierto que ladran, que atacan a personas LGTBI, pero no dejan de ser los últimos estertores de un mundo en extinción. No se puede ignorar a la ciencia. No se puede negar la dinámica de la historia en sus avances científicos.

Let’s see, are there no right-wing homosexuals or lesbians? Come now!   It is true that they bark, that they attack LGTBI people, but they are still the last death rattles of a world in extinction. You can’t ignore science. The dynamics of history in its scientific advances cannot be denied.

Emilien Buffard empezó diciendo que había odiado el deporte toda su vida,  hasta que surgió la idea de hacer unas fotos sobre deporte inclusivo: “Hoy estoy haciendo la promoción del deporte, justamente como herramienta de transformación social. Inicié este proyecto en Rosario (Argentina), la ciudad donde llevo viviendo unos diez años, y allí descubrí que había equipos inclusivos llevados mayoritariamente por miembros de la comunidad LGTBIQIA+ en toda Argentina. Descubriendo esta dinámica, me pareció que era necesario y útil visibilizar a estas agrupaciones porque son fuerza de propuesta, fuerza de cambio en las canchas y en la sociedad. Y recibí el apoyo del Institut français  que me permitió convocar organizaciones que son de la red cultural francesa en el extranjero para que identificaran en su ciudad o en su región, a un equipo inclusivo y que contrataran a un fotógrafo local que fotografiara a este equipo a la manera Sport Friendly”.

Emilien Buffard began by saying that he had hated sport his entire life, until the idea arose to take some photos about inclusive sport: “Today I am promoting sport, precisely as a tool for social transformation. I started this project in Rosario (Argentina), the city where I have been living for about ten years, and there I discovered that there were inclusive teams led mostly by members of the LGTBIQIA+ community throughout Argentina. Discovering this dynamic, it seemed to me that it was necessary and useful to make these groups visible because they are a force of proposal, a force of change on the fields and in society. And I received support from the Institut français, which allowed me to call on organizations that are part of the French cultural network abroad to identify an inclusive team in their city or region and hire a local photographer to photograph this team. the Sport Friendly way.”

En el patio alto del Instituto Francés, hablaron, antes de disfrutar de un cóctel con champán blanco y rosa, tortilla española, queso y embutidos, el Embajador de Francia,  Jean-Michel Casa, quién además de anunciarnos que terminaba en España su carrera diplomática en breve, resaltó esta España de hoy, abierta y tolerante, donde todo el mundo puede vivir su sexualidad como quiera. La Embajada de Francia es muy consciente de ello. «Tenía especial interés en que pudiéramos reunirnos, en el Institut français de Madrid, en plena semana del Orgullo de Madrid y a pocos días del comienzo de los Juegos Olímpicos y paralímpicos de París. El comité organizador de estos Juegos Olímpicos ha querido unos juegos populares, unos juegos que respetaran el medio ambiente y el patrimonio, unos juegos que celebraran el deporte en todo su esplendor. También ha querido unos juegos inclusivos. Y creo que ésta es la fuerza de lo que nos reúne esta tarde: el deporte une a las personas y tiende a borrar las divisiones. Por encima de todo, el deporte debe permitirnos compartir una aventura común, cada uno con sus diferencias»

He also wanted inclusive games. And I think this is the strength of what brings us together this afternoon: sport unites people. and tends to erase divisions. Justamente en el jardín alto  se inauguró la instalación de la doble exposición de fotos “Sport Friendly, la cancha de la diversidad” de Emilien Buffard y “Los Titanes” de Laurent Léger, un equipo de rugby LGTBI en su totalidad.

Tras el Embajador ocuparon la tribuna de oradores el Ministro del Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, miembro del colectivo gay, la Ministra de Igualdad, Ana Redondo y finalmente de nuevo el deportista y político Víctor Gutiérrez.

De todo lo que dijo el ministro Marlaska, entre agradecimientos, cooperación, amistad hispano francesa, inclusión, delitos de odio de aficionados homófobos en competiciones deportivas, resalto lo que dijo sobre las campeonas del mundo de fútbol femenino 2023: “En el fútbol femenino nuestras mujeres de la selección española nos han dado un ejemplo brillante. El año pasado, fueron Campeonas del Mundo gracias a su esfuerzo y nos dieron una doble lección. Nos dieron una lección de lo buenas que son en el campo, de lo equipo que son, y quizás son tan equipo porque también dieron una lección de valores de cómo entender la vida, de cómo confrontarla y de cómo ser ellas mismas. No sólo en el campo haciéndolo muy bien, sino también fuera del campo haciéndolo incluso mejor«.

Last year, they were World Champions thanks to their efforts and they gave us a double lesson. They gave us a lesson about how good they are on the field, about what a team they are, and perhaps they are such a team because they also gave a lesson in values ​​about how to understand life, how to confront it and how to be themselves. «Not only on the field doing very well, but also off the field doing even better.»

A Víctor Gutiérrez le preocupa la ola reaccionaria que gana fuerza en el mundo. Dijo: «Discursos que parecían marginales, que parecían formar parte de otra época, discursos machistas, racistas LGTBI fóbicos que parecía que como sociedad ya habíamos superado, están volviendo con fuerza«…

Víctor Gutiérrez is concerned about the reactionary wave that is gaining strength in the world. Querido Víctor, a mí y a muchos lo que nos preocupa es la causa de que esto se repita. Nada ocurre por casualidad. Algo hemos hecho mal para el regreso de esta ola. Aunque me digo: Un siglo más tarde, con sociedades radicalmente distintas, la historia no puede repetirse.

Dear Víctor, what worries me and many of us is why this is repeated. Nothing happens by chance. We have done something wrong for the return of this wave. Although I tell myself: A century later, with radically different societies, history cannot repeat itself.

Víctor Gutiérrez terminó su discurso dejando un esperado rayo de esperanza: “Creo que en este sentido los próximos JJ.OO. que van a celebrarse en París, van a tener un papel fundamental. Sabemos que a pesar de que las sociedades en muchos aspectos van avanzando, con el colectivo LGTBI, en el ámbito deportivo, seguimos estancados. El deporte sigue con unas cuotas altísimas de invisibilidad, de discriminación, de insultos. Por este motivo, creo que estos JJ.OO. van a ser históricos porque vamos a ver muchos deportistas, hombres y mujeres, dando este paso, siendo visibles, siendo un ejemplo para las nuevas generaciones. El deporte es una herramienta transformadora y de gran utilidad.”

Víctor Gutiérrez ended his speech leaving a long-awaited ray of hope: “I think that in this sense the next Olympic Games. that are going to be held in Paris, are going to play a fundamental role. We know that despite the fact that societies are advancing in many aspects, with the LGTBI community, in the sports field, we remain stagnant. Sport continues with very high rates of invisibility, discrimination, and insults. For this reason, I believe that these Olympic Games. They are going to be historic because we are going to see many athletes, men and women, taking this step, being visible, being an example for the new generations. “Sport is a transformative and very useful tool.”

Querido Víctor, basta con que todos los “diferentes” del deporte o de cualquier otro ámbito, se den cuenta de que permanecer en el armario juega en contra de sus intereses. Hay que salir, con la más absoluta naturalidad, diciendo aquí estamos, y nuestra vida privada es nuestra, pero en lo público somos tan buenos o mejores que los hetero.

Dear Víctor, it is enough for all those “different” in sports or any other field to realize that staying in the closet works against their interests. We have to come out, with the most absolute naturalness, saying here we are, and our private life is ours, but in public we are as good or better than the heteros.

Después de los discursos, la fiesta, que aunque estemos en suelo francés, somos españoles, los más festeros del mundo. Lleno total. Creo que todo el colectivo LGTBI de Madrid estaba presente en esos patios del Instituto Francés.

After the speeches, the party, that although we are on French soil, we are Spanish, the most festive in the world. Totally full. I believe that the entire LGTBI community of Madrid was present in those courtyards of the French Institute.

Ayer, en el Instituto, los hetero éramos  minoría. No viene mal, vivir esa sensación alguna vez. Se aprende de ella.

Yesterday, at the Institute, we heteros were a minority. It doesn’t hurt to experience that feeling once in a while. You learn from it.
