El barrio de Triana y el mundo del cante flamenco se ha vuelto a vestir de luto, para despedir a una figura del cante de atrás, patriarca de la gran familia de artistas trianeros,  los Fernández. Curro Fernández, que merece una gran despedida.

The neighborhood of Triana and the world of flamenco singing has once again dressed in mourning, to say goodbye to a figure of flamenco singing, patriarch of the great family of Triana artists, the Fernández. Curro Fernández, who deserves a great farewell.

Dicen los trianeros de pro, que Sevilla es un barrio de Triana y no al revés. Razones tienen, no por antigüedad que aquí  en la orilla derecha del Guadalquivir, antes Betis, se remonta al siglo XII con la construcción del puente de Barcas, hoy de Triana o Isabel II. Barrio de gitanos desde el siglo XV, una de las cunas del cante. Barrio de alfareros, fragüeros, carniceros. Barrio industrial, próspero, barrio de esclavos negros en el siglo XVII, que participó del auge económico de Sevilla.

Pro Triana residents say that Seville is a neighborhood of Triana and not the other way around. They have reasons, not because of antiquity that here on the right bank dates back to the 12th century with the construction of the Barcas bridge, today Triana or Isabel II bridge. Gypsy neighborhood since the 15th century, one of the cradles of singing. Neighborhood of potters, forges, butchers. Industrial, prosperous neighborhood, neighborhood of black slaves in the 17th century, which participated in the economic boom of Seville.

Muchos avatares en su historia, como la redada contra los gitanos de 1649 ordenada por el Marqués de la Ensenada, ministro de Fernando VI. Muchos cambios, hasta convertirse en el barrio residencial que es hoy, donde solo quedan unas pocas muestras de corrales de vecinos, casi piezas de museo.

Many vicissitudes in its history, such as the raid against the gypsies in 1649 ordered by the Marquis of Ensenada, minister of Fernando VI. Many changes, until it became the residential neighborhood it is today, where only a few samples of neighbors’ corrals remain, almost museum pieces.

Como para no recordar al marinero Rodrigo de Triana, el primero en avistar tierra del nuevo continente. Trianeros fueron los Machado, el padre Demófilo, cronista e investigador del flamenco, los hijos Antonio y Manuel Machado, grandes poetas. Trianera la madre, de la calle Betis.

Toda esta historia para decir adiós al gran Curro Fernández, que se fue el 14 de junio. Curro, cantaor de atrás,  padre de la gran cantaora Esperanza Fernández, del guitarrista Paco Fernández y del bailaor Joselito Fernández.

Este viernes, 14 de junio, se anunciaba su partida a la vida eterna por causas naturales, dejándonos en el recuerdo muchos momentos cabales, y todo un intenso legado artístico, que incluye su más preciada herencia, el arte de sus hijos, encargados de perpetuar, a partir de ahora la saga familiar que empezó con él. 

This Friday, June 14, his departure to eternal life due to natural causes was announced, leaving us in our memory many precise moments, and an intense artistic legacy, which includes his most precious inheritance, the art of his children, in charge of perpetuating , from now on the family saga that began with him. 

Curro Fernández, fue un cantaor gitano, que nació en Triana, el día 15 de diciembre del año de 1941 en la calle Fabié. A los seis años, como muchos trianeros se tuvo que mudar a Camas, más concretamente a La Pañoleta, donde se inició en el cante gracias a su padre, gran aficionado, que organizaba fiestas cabales.  

Curro Fernández was a gypsy singer, who was born in Triana, on December 15, 1941 on Fabié Street. At the age of six, like many people from Triana, he had to move to Camas, more specifically to La Pañoleta, where he started singing thanks to his father, a great fan, who organized great parties.  

Como todos los niños pobres, gitanos o no, tuvo dos vías para salir de la pobreza, el cante o el fútbol. Aunque finalmente se decantó por el cante, Curro tuvo gran pasión por el fútbol.

Like all poor children, gypsy or not, he had two ways out of poverty: singing or football. Although he finally opted for singing, Curro had a great passion for soccer.

A la temprana edad de diecisiete años se decidió por el flamenco como profesión. Sus inicios estuvieron en el baile con los Coros y Danzas de Educación y Descanso, pero los caprichos del destino quisieron que nos regalara finalmente con su cante. Empezó en ese mismo grupo, al enfermar su cantaor. Desde el principio contó con los ánimos de sus compañeros.. 

At the young age of seventeen he decided on flamenco as a profession. His beginnings were in dancing with the Education and Rest Choirs and Dances, but the whims of fate wanted him to finally give us his singing. He started in that same group, when his singer became ill. From the beginning he had the encouragement of his teammates. 

Ese fue el inicio de una gran carrera, siempre en el cante de atrás, acompañando a los mejores artistas del baile desde los 60 a los 80 del pasado siglo. El Mimbre, Manuela Carrasco, Matilde Coral, Lola Flores, Carmen Ledesma, Farruquito… 

That was the beginning of a great career, always in the back singing, accompanying the best dance artists from the 60s to the 80s of the last century. El Mimbre, Manuela Carrasco, Matilde Coral, Lola Flores, Carmen Ledesma, Farruquito…

En los años setenta, por un problema en la voz, su representante, Pulpón, le organizó un cuadro flamenco con sus hijos y su mujer. Fue un éxito rotundo,  que los llevó, durante varias décadas a actuar todos juntos bajo el nombre de Familia Fernández, o La Casa de los Fernández. Ahí se produjo el début solista de sus tres hijos.  

In the seventies, due to a voice problem, his representative, Pulpón, organized a flamenco group for him with his children and his wife. It was a resounding success, which led them, for several decades, to act together under the name Familia Fernández, or La Casa de los Fernández. There was the solo debut of his three children.  

Pero además, Curro fue el artista elegido por Antonio Mairena para sustituirle en los viajes que hacía la Tertulia Flamenca de Radio Sevilla para interpretar la Misa Flamenca. Participó en el Congreso Flamenco y Radio de la Universidad de Sevilla, en la Bienal de 2016 con María Esperanza Sánchez, Iñaki Gabilondo, Calixto Sánchez y Matilde Coral en la mesa redonda del “Cincuenta Aniversario de las Tertulias flamencas de Radio Sevilla”,  de las que Curro Fernández también formaba parte. 

But also, Curro was the artist chosen by Antonio Mairena to replace him on the trips that the Tertulia Flamenca of Radio Seville made to perform the Flamenco Mass. He participated in the Flamenco and Radio Congress of the University of Seville, in the 2016 Biennial with María Esperanza Sánchez, Iñaki Gabilondo, Calixto Sánchez and Matilde Coral in the round table of the “Fiftieth Anniversary of the Flamenco Tertulias of Radio Seville”, of the that Curro Fernández was also part of it. 

En lo personal no podemos olvidar su boda con la artista lebrijana Pepa Vargas, de la que se dice fue la última boda gitana que duró más de ocho días, a la que asistieron muchos grandes de lo jondo. Pastora Imperio llegó cargada de mantones de manila que distribuyó a todas las gitanas para celebrar el evento. Antonio Mairena, puro arte y compás para celebrar el casamiento. 

Personally, we cannot forget his wedding with the Lebrijana artist Pepa Vargas, which is said to have been the last gypsy wedding that lasted more than eight days, attended by many greats of flamenco. Pastora Imperio arrived loaded with manila shawls that she distributed to all the gypsies to celebrate the event. Antonio Mairena, pure art and compas to celebrate the wedding.

La voz de Curro se ha apagado, La Casa de los Fernández ha perdido a su patriarca, pero su legado será eterno y su saga continúa gracias a sus hijos, encabezados por la gran Esperanza Fernández,  una de las mejores artistas contemporáneas del flamenco.  

Curro’s voice has faded, La Casa de los Fernández has lost its patriarch, but his legacy will be eternal and his saga continues thanks to his children, led by the great Esperanza Fernández, one of the best contemporary flamenco artists.

Hasta siempre, Curro Fernández, que en el cielo siga resonando tu cante por los siglos de los siglos. Con Triana como referente.
