THE THINKER; WHAT CRAZY, LORD!

Menos mal que tenemos a la ciencia, ahí nomás, a la mano, para recurrir a ella cuando no podemos desenredar un problema que hemos creado y no sabemos muy bien –o no queremos saberlo- debido a qué.

Luckily we have science, right there, at hand, to turn to when we cannot untangle a problem that we have created and we don’t know very well – or we don’t want to know – why.

Y la ciencia no para de avanzar, aunque a veces, para esclarecernos, deba volver hacia atrás y explicarnos que ciertos comportamientos en los que incurrimos son innatos en nuestra condición de animales evolucionados. Bueno, quizás esto sea una exageración y haya que decir más o menos evolucionados o dando los primeros exámenes para ver si logramos evolucionar.

And science does not stop advancing, although sometimes, to clarify it, it must go back and explain to us that certain behaviors we engage in are innate in our condition as evolved animals. Well, perhaps this is an exaggeration and we have to say more or less evolved or taking the first tests to see if we manage to evolve.

Observemos juntos, lector, por ir a un simple ejemplo pero demasiado sonoro y visible como para obviarlo: el terrible enredo que tienen los partidos políticos con la cuestión de las candidaturas y, en especial, con las futuras fórmulas presidenciales.

Let’s observe together, reader, to go to a simple example but too loud and visible to ignore: the terrible entanglement that political parties have with the question of candidacies and, especially, with future presidential formulas.

No quiero que el lector pierda el tiempo, como quizás lo esté haciendo yo ahora: día a día brotan circunstancias, en torno a esa cuestión, capaces de alimentar, como está ocurriendo, la distancia que los ciudadanos están poniendo entre ellos y el ámbito político.

I do not want the reader to waste time, as perhaps I am doing now: day by day circumstances arise around this issue, capable of feeding, as is happening, the distance that citizens are putting between themselves and the political sphere.

Es que ya se están exponiendo propuestas que, cuanto menos, pueden inducir a un fuerte pico de presión, una diarrea incontenible o un cólico nefrítico.

The thing is that proposals are already being put forward that, at the very least, can induce a strong peak in pressure, uncontrollable diarrhea or renal colic.

Por eso proclamo: apoyémonos en aportes científicos.

That is why I proclaim: let us rely on scientific contributions.

Ha dicho el etólogo Tinbergen, refiriéndose a especies anteriores a la humana pero que aplica a nosotros, que “cuando por cualquier motivo se impide el curso del movimiento normal adecuado a una situación –esto lo añado yo: caso de unas simples y abiertas elecciones internas para elegir una fórmula a candidatear a la Presidencia del país-, ese movimiento es sustituido por otro y entonces se producen movimientos tan inesperados como inadecuados.

The ethologist Tinbergen has said, referring to species before humans but which applies to us, that “when for any reason the course of normal movement appropriate to a situation is prevented – I add this: case of simple and open internal choices to choose a formula to run for the Presidency of the country -, that movement is replaced by another and then movements that are as unexpected as they are inappropriate occur.

Quiere decir que hay una confusión tal, que pueden aparecer dirigentes alegremente adelantando la postulación, valga el caso y con exclusión del resto de aspirantes, de la fórmula Rada-Vigil, aludiendo a la popularidad y, sobre todo, a la inclusión que estaría muy valorada.

It means that there is such confusion that leaders can appear happily advancing the application, whatever the case may be and to the exclusion of the rest of the candidates, of the Rada-Vigil formula, alluding to popularity and, above all, to the inclusion that would be very valued.

Quizás sea por esto –digo, la confusión- que tantos dirigentes políticos andan rascándose la cabeza a dos manos. ¡Cuidado, lector! No extraiga la indecente conclusión de que tienen piojos, sino recuerde que ese movimiento es, precisamente por lo gráfico, signo de que están más desorientados que Bergara tratando de subir a un potro en El Prado para domarlo.

Perhaps this is why – I mean, the confusion – that so many political leaders are scratching their heads with both hands. Beware, reader! Do not draw the indecent conclusion that they have lice, but remember that this movement is, precisely because of its graphic nature, a sign that they are more disoriented than Bergara trying to climb a colt in El Prado to tame it.

Ahora bien, mi amigo, ¿qué hacer para eliminar los movimientos de sustitución y volver al movimiento normal?

Now, my friend, what to do to eliminate the substitution movements and return to normal movement?

Hay que eliminar la excitación.

You have to eliminate the excitement.

Claro, el poder excita, la ambición por los cargos excita, el sentir que se tiene la última palabra excita.

Of course, power excites, ambition for office excites, the feeling that you have the last word excites.

Volviendo a la ciencia, investigadores serios recomiendan hacer lo que hacían especies menos elaboradas que la nuestra pero más prácticas en algún sentido: sacudir la cabeza y el cuerpo, como si se intentara ahuyentar a un brujo malo, alimentarse doblemente de lo normal -después con la crisis todo volverá a su peso (o menos)- y hasta expulgarse con paciencia, entre varios individuos sin distinción de sexo –heteros, homos, trans y otros- ni raza –blancos, negros, amarillos, marrones y otros- ni religión –católicos, mormones, musulmanes, comunistas y otros-.

Returning to science, serious researchers recommend doing what species less elaborate than ours but more practical in some sense did: shaking the head and body, as if trying to scare away a bad sorcerer, feeding twice as much as normal – then with the crisis will return to its weight (or less) – and even be expelled with patience, among various individuals without distinction of sex – straight, homo, trans and others – or race – white, black, yellow, brown and others – or religion – Catholics, Mormons, Muslims, Communists and others.

En fin. Yo confío en la ciencia, aunque no puedo asegurar que todas estas actividades conduzcan a pensar con claridad y alcanzar un consenso.

Anyway. I trust science, although I cannot guarantee that all of these activities will lead to clear thinking and consensus.

Pero, viendo los nombres que se han lanzado al ruedo, ¿qué es lo peor que podría pasar?

But, seeing the names that have been thrown into the ring, what’s the worst that could happen?

¿Qué salga una fórmula integrada por Pitufo Lombardo y Débora Rodriguez? Y… habría repique, alegría y velocidad.  

Is there a formula made up of Pitufo Lombardo and Débora Rodriguez? And… there would be ringing, joy and speed.  

O, de rebote, tal vez crezca, afuera, la dupla Petinatt y El Hombre Araña.

Or, on the rebound, perhaps the duo Petinatt and Spider-Man will grow outside.

No negará, lector, que sería divertido.
