Cuenta con el apoyo de 11 coreógrafos, 2 son mexicanos, tocan todo tipo de temas sociales con los que están totalmente comprometidos, para visibilizar enfermedades mentales, abuso doméstico, tratar de que se sensibilice la sociedad acerca de los temas de actualidad a través del arte y la danza.

Egresado de la Escuela Nacional de Danza Clásica y Contemporánea del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA), recuerda sus inicios, quizá cuando era casi impensable que pudiera entregar su vida a la danza, al arte, y diseñar vestuarios.

Graduated from the National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance of the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA), he remembers his beginnings, perhaps when it was almost unthinkable that he could give his life to dance, art, and design costumes.

Ingresó por azares del destino a una escuela de educación artística, y cuando se dio cuenta terminó tomando clases de danza, su maestra vio algo en él que le hizo prometer que seis meses después tocaría la puerta para estudiar formalmente danza en el INBA.

He entered an art education school by chance, and when he realized he ended up taking dance classes, his teacher saw something in him that made him promise that six months later he would knock on the door to formally study dance at INBA.

En ese momento, Ben, no era consciente de sus capacidades en la danza profesional, solo quería tomar el reto que era extremadamente difícil, interesante, apasionante, así que le respondió que trataría de hacerlo, ¡no, tienes que prometer que lo harás!, dijo su maestra. “Aceptaban a personas mayores, ya que la danza para quienes se van a dedicar a esto comienza siendo niños, y yo comencé a los 17 años y medio, iniciar la carrera de danza a esta edad era casi imposible, pero existía esa oportunidad por aquel entonces”. Al mismo tiempo que tomaba en serio la danza, Benjamín hacía la carrera de Arquitectura en la UNAM en la que logró mantenerse hasta el primer semestre.

Haber iniciado con la carrera como bailarín lo hizo buscar más entrenamiento, técnica, aunque no tenía dinero ni el apoyo de su familia, así que se presentó en una audición de danza clásica del INBA y continuó más estudios por la tarde. En la mañana estaba entregado al ballet clásico y de ahí se preparó para una audición en la escuela privada Centro de Arte y Ballet Tecamachalco, que es una extensión de la Royal Academy of Dance, de Inglaterra, fue así como la propietaria y prestigiada maestra Tita Ortega lo becó por completo, terminó danza clásica y contemporánea, dos carreras, y se graduó en el INBA en seis años, todo en forma simultánea. Benjamín en ese tiempo, no sabía de nadie que haya hecho lo mismo.

Audicionó para la Compañía Nacional de Danza Clásica que es la más grande de ballet que existe en el INBA y en ese entonces tenía entre 70 quizá 80 bailarines, según recuerda, había tres compañías de ballet en México, el ballet de Monterrey, la compañía de ballet de la UNAM.

Resultó que el maestro y bailarín cubano Fernando Alonso Ryneri, tomó la compañía de ballet de Bellas Artes y decidió que no quería recibir a ningún bailarín mexicano y contrataron de otros países como Brasil, Cuba, Argentina, entre otros.

Benjamín Briones un joven bailarín acostumbrado a jornadas extenuantes, estaba sin trabajo así que audicionó inesperadamente para una compañía texana que en ese momento se hallaba en la Ciudad de México y para su mayor sorpresa le ofrecieron un contrato de un mes para una producción en el verano de 1994. Posteriormente regresó a México y comenzó a buscar trabajo en la Compañía Nacional de Danza, pero no era bienvenido así que audicionó para otra compañía independiente, donde estuvo tomando clases y como no lo contrataron en su breve estancia de una semana, lo animó a tomar nuevos retos, las puertas parecían cerradas, así que se inscribió para el primer concurso nacional de danza, fue el primer año que se lanzó, fue a Guadalajara donde sufrió un accidente.

Benjamín Briones, a young dancer used to strenuous days, was out of work so he unexpectedly auditioned for a Texas company that was in Mexico City at the time and to his greatest surprise he was offered a one-month contract for a production in the summer 1994. Later he returned to Mexico and began to look for work in the National Dance Company, but he was not welcome so he auditioned for another independent company, where he was taking classes and since he was not hired in his brief stay of a week, he encouraged To take on new challenges, the doors seemed closed, so he signed up for the first national dance contest, it was the first year it was launched, he went to Guadalajara where he suffered an accident.

En el Paso Texas le ofrecieron en septiembre un contrato y como no sucedió nada en México, además de que todavía no lograba recuperarse de su dedo roto, les preguntó que si lo necesitaban y si le hacían válido el contrato con la lesión, le respondieron que sí y se fue en enero, viajó para instalare en Texas el 5 enero de 1995, donde el contrato de trabajo le permitía una residencia hasta el mes de junio.

De enero a junio estuvo en El Paso Texas en la compañía de su novia, llegó el verano así que estuvo un año y medio en una compañía pequeña donde varios mexicanos han bailado y todo estuvo muy bien. Luego se presentó para una audición en el Austin Ballet, donde estuvo trabajando de 1996 a 1997, era una compañía más grande, dinámica con un repertorio variado, una bonita compañía donde había cubanos y bailarines de otros países. Era una ciudad joven, el ambiente musical de una ciudad pequeña y yo con mis emociones desbordadas de querer conocer más.

Ocurrió que a su novia le dieron una beca en Nueva York por parte de Joseph Ballet, una escuela reconocida, entonces viajó con ella, sin trabajo, en el verano de 1997, y comenzó otra etapa a tomar clases en Nueva York, aprendió mucho sobre cómo audicionar y competir para ser mejor.

En agosto había conseguido un contrato por un año en Maryland, es una historia larga. La síntesis es que pasó por muchas compañías como invitado, en Austin, bailó siendo parte de compañías haciendo papeles de solista, bailó hasta que se le rompió el cuerpo, y ya no dio para más.

Así bailó el Cascanueces, era una fractura demasiado grave, tenía un pedazo de hueso roto.

Terminó con el pie destrozado y se fue a México a ver a su familia, a descansar, visitó a un doctor muy conocido que trataba a futbolistas y en una consulta le llamó la atención y lo operó, la realidad es que se había dañado mucho la articulación, fue una operación difícil que tomó mucho tiempo en recuperarse, tenía 40 años en esa época, después de un año todavía no podía tomar clases, se vio obligado momentáneamente a retirarse de la danza en 2006.

Al retroceder en sus memorias del tiempo, refiere que comenzó en 1998 a dar clases para compensar sus ingresos económicos, había una academia en Long Island, donde conocía a la directora, además de ser bailarín por la situación económica se convirtió en diseñador de ropa de danza desde que llegó a Estados Unidos en 1995, siempre hacía vestuarios.

Pensaba durante los tiempos difíciles, “tengo el pie fracturado”, caminaba con bastón o muletas, luego entró como ballet master de la compañía, cuando montaba una de sus piezas, ahí comenzó otra etapa en una compañía profesional un aceleramiento como maestro, coreógrafo y director, dirigir los ensayos durante tres años, luego con otra compañía y se comenzaron a abrir las puertas dando clases en escuelas más prestigiadas, ascender en el ámbito de ser maestro, dirigir a bailarines profesionales, hasta que abrió su propia compañía de danza hace ocho años aproximadamente.

Para finalizar, nos plantea que a causa del Covid las escuelas cerraron y los maestros de danza perdieron el trabajo. Sus reflexiones lo han llevado a pensar que si la economía global tarda en recuperarse dos o tres años, la danza va a tardar como cinco años por lo menos en Nueva York. Hace un alto y agrega: “en México es una realidad que está atrasado como 50 años en las metodologías de enseñanza, los maestros que existen en nuestro país, sobre todo de ballet, la mayoría son exbailarines de la compañía nacional de ballet que tienen buen nivel, pero es difícil que quienes fueron formados en estas academias puedan estar a la altura de otras academias del mundo, como Estados Unidos que está cerca o Rusia, donde el intercambio de las técnicas es muy fluido”.

Finally, he asks us that because of the Covid the schools closed and the dance teachers lost their jobs. His reflections have led him to think that if the global economy takes two or three years to recover, the dance will take at least five years in New York. Es cierto que últimamente México se está abriendo mucho más, pero es todavía un rincón que no ha fluido, maestros se atienen a las técnicas que aprendieron, válidas, excelentes bailarines, pero se carece todavía de una actualización suficiente, no dudo que hay maestros que se actualicen, pero las técnicas se actualizan permanentemente.
