The term had its origin in the penitentiary reforms of 1835, where it was experimented as «treatment» to give «treatment of absolute silence» to inmates in prisons as an alternative to physical punishment, it specifically consisted of the prohibition of prisoners from speaking , being called only by a number instead of their name and having their faces covered so that they do not see each other, with this it was intended that they reflect on their crimes.
