Conozco a Jairo desde su infancia, y se de su trayectoria y éxitos, como de sus momentos difíciles en el exterior, que supo superar magistralmente gracias a su perseverancia. También conozco el gran papel social de su distinguida familia. Todos ellos, personas de reconocido valor moral y ético, que se destacaron no solo por su visión y talante intelectual, sino también por su sensibilidad social, el amor al prójimo, el servicio a la patria y el de nuestra ciudad nativa.

I have known Jairo since his childhood, and I am aware of his trajectory and successes, as well as his difficult moments abroad, which he overcame masterfully thanks to his perseverance. I also know the great social role of his distinguished family. All of them are people of recognized moral and ethical value, who stood out not only for their vision and intellectual demeanor, but also for their social sensitivity, love for their fellow man, service to the homeland, and to our native city.

Jairo, his parents, and his siblings were born in the historic and tourist city, and each one in particular contributed their grain of sand to honor it through their visionary ideas.

La familia Martines Fernández, vivió muchísimo tiempo en el Barrio de Manga de la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, lugar hermoso, terruño de mis amores, y recuerdo permanente de mis mejores días, cuna donde yo nací y que espero vuelen por los aires mis cenizas, para seguir contemplando desde la eternidad, a mi bella y amada Cartagena.

The Martínez Fernández family lived for a very long time in the Manga neighborhood of the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia—a beautiful place, the land of my loves, and a permanent memory of my best days, the cradle where I was born and where I hope my ashes will fly through the air, to continue contemplating from eternity my beautiful and beloved Cartagena.

Jairo, sus padres, y sus hermanos, nacieron en la ciudad histórica y turística, y cada uno de ellos en particular aporto su granito de arena para honrarla mediante sus ocurrencias visionarias.

La interesante historia de Jairo inicia su recorrido debido a un programa convenio intercolegial entre Miami y la ciudad de Coral Gables con Cartagena, ciudades hermanadas unidas por el afecto que genera el aire marino del Océano Atlántico y la influencia de hispanos la que hoy se le considera como la puerta del Caribe; en otras palabras, Miami y Cartagena en su profunda hermandad, se constituyen en paraíso para las más bellas vacaciones mutuas. Jairo viajo en ese intercambio intercolegial, y fue recibido por la familia de apellido Kahn, una de las 21 familias más rica de la florida.

Jairo’s interesting story begins its journey due to an intercollegiate exchange program between Miami and the city of Coral Gables with Cartagena—sister cities united by the affection generated by the sea air of the Atlantic Ocean and the influence of Hispanics, which today is considered the gateway to the Caribbean; in other words, Miami and Cartagena, in their deep sisterhood, constitute a paradise for the most beautiful mutual vacations. Jairo traveled in that intercollegiate exchange and was received by the Kahn family, one of the 21 richest families in Florida.

Terminados sus estudios regreso a Miami, y se empleó en el Restaurante las Tapas, cuyo concepto gastronómico es eminentemente español, en el que se ofrecen deliciosas comidas en porciones pequeñas acompañadas de un buen vino. Dicho restaurante, es de propiedad de un reconocido español de nombre Felipe Vals, propietario de otros centros del buen gourmet, de similar distinción, como Versalles, La carreta y el Cid, este último, ya no existe.

After finishing his studies, he returned to Miami and got a job at the Las Tapas Restaurant, whose gastronomic concept is eminently Spanish, offering delicious small-portioned meals accompanied by good wine. Said restaurant is owned by a renowned Spaniard named Felipe Vals, owner of other fine gourmet centers of similar distinction, such as Versailles, La Carreta, and El Cid—the latter of which no longer exists.

En el restaurante «Las TAPAS» se desempeñó Jairo como mesero, cargo que el señor Vals le ofreció para ayudarlo, y que Jairo por no sentirse a gusto por las exigencias del oficio renuncio. No obstante, el señor Vals, considero que existía en el joven Martínez un potencial que estaba por descubrir, y antes que aceptar su dimisión, le dio el cargo de portero del restaurante, para que recibiera a todas las personas que entraban a dicho establecimiento.

At the Las Tapas Restaurant, Jairo worked as a waiter, a position that Mr. Vals offered him to help him, but Jairo resigned because he didn’t feel comfortable with the demands of the job. However, Mr. Vals considered that there was potential in young Martínez yet to be discovered, and instead of accepting his resignation, he gave him the position of doorman at the restaurant, so that he could greet all the people entering the establishment.

Aquí comienza apreciado lector mi relato, con algunos apartes de entrevista con Jairo, la que no solo es admirable por su contenido humano que yo conocía desde tiempo atrás, sino que representa el más vivo ejemplo para combatir el negativismo, y abrirle el paso al arrojo, a la intrepidez y al deseo de superarse. El fracaso solo existe en la mente que inicia sus sueños en la negación, por ello, siempre he sido un soñador y lo sigo siendo a mis 82 años, y mi optimismo, me da fuerza para sentirme joven. Nunca he creído en el fracaso, solo en el tiempo, que para mí nunca se termina, inclusive, la muerte es para mí un triunfo camino a la vida eterna.

Here begins, dear reader, my story, with some excerpts from an interview with Jairo, which is not only admirable for its human content that I have known for a long time, but also represents the most vivid example for combating negativity and opening the way to boldness, daring, and the desire to improve oneself. Failure only exists in the mind that begins its dreams in denial; therefore, I have always been a dreamer and continue to be at my 82 years, and my optimism gives me strength to feel young. I have never believed in failure, only in time, which for me never ends; even death is for me a triumph on the path to eternal life.

¿Cómo hiciste para lograr un éxito internacional, que no igual has podido lograr en Colombia?

How did you manage to achieve international success that you haven’t been able to match in Colombia?

Mi apreciado Senen, nadie es profeta en su propia tierra, y más si la envidia es parte de los peores vicios o enfermedad que impide sobresalir, y uno, por miedo, no los enfrenta. Yo lo enfrente, y lo vencí, pero en Colombia es donde se me ha hecho más difícil, porque los abrazos que espontáneamente doy con cariño, algunos que recibo, no llevan el mismo sentimiento.

My dear Senen, no one is a prophet in their own land, especially if envy is part of the worst vices or illnesses that prevent one from standing out, and one, out of fear, doesn’t confront them. I confronted it and defeated it, but in Colombia it’s where it has been most difficult for me, because the hugs I spontaneously give with affection, some that I receive, don’t carry the same feeling.

Sabes mi apreciado Senen, respondiendo tu pregunta: Gracias a mi hermana Blanca y a Rosaura Rodríguez a quien tu conociste y admiraste, junto a su esposo, ellos me llevaron al mundo del entretenimiento. Su esposo Mario Ruiz trabajaba en ese mundo. Y por ellos llegué al restaurante y a la portería de LAS TAPAS, que fue la entrada al éxito.

You know, my dear Senen, answering your question: Thanks to my sister Blanca and to Rosaura Rodríguez, whom you knew and admired, along with her husband—they brought me into the world of entertainment. Her husband Mario Ruiz worked in that world. And through them, I arrived at the restaurant and the doorman position at LAS TAPAS, which was the entry to success.

Rosaura y Mario me enseñaron a Pescar, y eso hice en la portería del restaurante, pescar con el arte del buen trato al público. Por eso la puerta por donde entraron las personalidades, era precisamente la que yo cuidaba, y fue así como pude conocer a los grandes empresarios, a los artistas de la música, del arte, del cine y políticos. Rosaura y Mario apalancaron mi vocación.

Rosaura and Mario taught me to fish, and that’s what I did at the restaurant’s door: fish with the art of good treatment of the public. That’s why the door through which personalities entered was precisely the one I guarded, and that’s how I was able to meet great businessmen, music artists, art, cinema, and politicians. Rosaura and Mario leveraged my vocation.

Eso lo capitalice, tratando a la gente con amor, con respeto y a todos los estime como grandes valores humanos. Así he sido toda la vida, sin distingos sociales. Por ello, fue en ese momento que descubrí que mi vocación eran las relaciones públicas.

I capitalized on that by treating people with love, with respect, and esteeming everyone as great human values. That’s how I’ve been all my life, without social distinctions. It was at that moment that I discovered my vocation was public relations.

Jairo, ¿a quienes conociste a través de esa portería?

Antes de responderte esa pregunta, te diré algo que seguramente tú no sabes. La persona que me ayudo para que yo llegara a los Estados Unidos en ese intercambio, fue tu hermana Cristina González de Mac Master, que era miembro del comité: People to people.. Cartagena Coral Gables.

Before answering that question, I’ll tell you something you surely don’t know. The person who helped me get to the United States in that exchange was your sister Cristina González de Mac Master, who was a member of the committee: People to People… Cartagena Coral Gables.

Ahora si Jairo, cuéntame a quienes conociste en la gran puerta de la fama, del restaurante: ¿Las Tapas?

Senen, allí Conocí y me hice amigo de todos estos personajes que te enumero en los que en muchos tuvo que ver Rosaura y Mario: Gloria Estefan con su esposo Emilio Estefan muy incondicionales conmigo lo mismo que Kike Santander gran talento. Ángela Carrasco, Javier Suarez alcalde de Miami, a su hijo Francis Suarez, también Alcalde de la misma ciudad, quien acaba de salir por finalizar su mandato. Con el tiempo Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan y Chayanne formaron parte de los muchos cantantes latinos a quienes promocione.

Senen, it was there that I met and became friends with all these people I’m listing, many of whom were connected to Rosaura and Mario: Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio Estefan, who were very supportive of me, as was Kike Santander, a great talent. Ángela Carrasco, Javier Suarez, the mayor of Miami, and his son Francis Suarez, also mayor of the same city, who just finished his term. Over time, Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan, and Chayanne became among the many Latin singers I promoted.

Desde Sony Música, como ejecutivo importante, con el cargo de relaciones públicas me correspondió apoyar a muchos artistas latinos, entre estos a Shakira que fue cuando la conocí. Jairo luego se convierte en director de promociones y relacionista público de Estefan Enterprises donde no solo se encargaba de los artistas de la casa musical, sino también de los restaurantes y clubes de Emilio y Gloria. Durante este tiempo Jairo crea su compañía I Resolve, la cual se ha encargado de promocionar artistas de gran calidad internacional.

From Sony Music, as an important executive in the public relations position, it was my job to support many Latin artists, among them Shakira, which is when I met her. Jairo became the promotions director and public relations manager for Estefan Enterprises, where he was responsible not only for the record label’s artists but also for Emilio and Gloria’s restaurants and clubs. During this time, Jairo founded his own company, I Resolve, which has focused on promoting high-caliber international artists

Quiero comentarte Senen, que también trabajé en una discoteca, de nombre CASA BLANCA, Coconut Grove, en los fines de semana, y allí hice algunos trabajos con Ángela Carrasco y Chayanne. Trabaje de modo independiente con varias disqueras. Entre esas como te dije, con Sony Músic, como manejador de las relaciones públicas.

I want to tell you, Senen, that I also worked at a nightclub called CASA BLANCA, in Coconut Grove, on weekends, and there I did some work with Ángela Carrasco and Chayanne. I worked independently with various record labels. Among them, as I told you, with Sony Music, as a public relations manager.

Senen, cuando llego hoy dia a Miami, siento que lo que sembré, fue eterno. Recibo el aprecio de mucha gente, que me recuerda y me atiende con sincero aprecio.

Jairo Martínez, cumple años el 11 de febrero y siempre celebraba la fiesta colombiana en Miami, en Bogotá y Cartagena, con motivos autóctonos. Esa última fiesta del año 2002 celebrada en las ciudades en mención, se postuló en chanza, como candidato al senado de Colombia, por el exterior y resulto elegido senador de la Republica por cuatro años. La simpatía conquista, lo que jamás la imaginación no es capaz de idealizar.

Jairo Martínez’s birthday is on February 11, and he always celebrated the Colombian party in Miami, in Bogotá, and Cartagena, with native motifs. In that last party of the year 2002, celebrated in the mentioned cities, he jokingly nominated himself as a candidate for the Senate of Colombia, for the exterior, and ended up being elected Senator of the Republic for four years. Sympathy conquers what imagination is never capable of idealizing.

La vida de Jairo Martínez, es el mejor estímulo para jamás dejarse vencer. Hoy esta con TELE CARIBE, y supongo que la programadora del Caribe, debe estar aprovechando de su experiencia. Escribir sobre Jairo, es llevarlo a un libro.

Jairo Martínez’s life is the best stimulus to never let oneself be defeated. Today he is with TELE CARIBE, and I suppose the Caribbean programmer must be taking advantage of his experience. Writing about Jairo is like turning him into a book.
