Let me tell you a story: The Lion of Two Worlds

En las extensas llanuras de la sábana, cubiertas de pastizales, arbustos en tiempo de transición, cuando se alejan las lluvias y falta el agua.

In the vast plains of the savannah, covered with grasslands, shrubs in a time of transition, when the rains recede and water is scarce.

Existe un hogar de leones que observaremos en su manada, la familia de él gran león, llamado con aprecio Kanko junto con su pareja la leona llamada Tira y sus dos cachorros de nombre llamados Tormenta y Rayo. Kanko era muy respetado por todos gracias a su habilidad, sabiduría, liderazgo y destreza. El respeto que le tenían ante cualquier decisión era casi un mandato para toda la manada.

There is a lion home that we will observe in its pride, the family of the great lion, affectionately named Kanko, along with his partner, the lioness named Tira, and their two cubs named Storm and Lightning. Kanko was highly respected by all thanks to his skill, wisdom, leadership, and dexterity. The respect they showed him in any decision he made was almost a mandate for the entire pride.

Cierto día mientras en aquel paraje se retiraban las lluvias y el paisaje se tornaba ya de sequía, Kanko el león platicaba con sus demás compañeros de la manada, con voz que imponía, les comento seriamente. Ha llegado el tiempo de sequía y tenemos que salir a buscar provisiones para nuestros críos no se pueden quedar sin alimento; aunque algunos no les agradaba la decisión porque sabían lo que les esperaba…

One day, as the rains in that place receded and the landscape was already turning dry, Kanko the lion was talking with his other pride companions, in an imposing voice, telling them seriously: The time of drought has arrived, and we must go out and look for provisions for our cubs. They cannot go without food; although some did not like the decision because they knew what awaited them…

El gran león esa noche se retiró en silencio con un andar sereno, al llegar a su remanso lo esperaba “Tira” la leona y directamente le comento su decisión ante sus pequeños cachorros. Familia tengo que ir de caza antes de que la comida empiece a escasear, ahora que es tiempo de secas tenemos que ir más lejos que lo habitual y muy cerca con su melena rodeo a Tira, a Tormenta y a Rayo, lo hago por ustedes que tanto quiero.

The great lion retreated silently that night, his gait serene. When he reached his haven, «Tira,» the lioness, was waiting for him, and he told her his decision directly to her little cubs. «Family, I have to go hunting before food starts to run low. Now that it’s dry season, we have to go farther than usual, and I surround Tira, Storm, and Lightning very close with my mane. I do it for you, whom I love so much.

Regreso pronto, si el creador lo permite, lo hago por el bienestar de la familia, que son mi fuerza y alma. Tira comento, quisiera acompañarte, pero estamos en tiempo de crianza y su frente recargo en aquel entrecejo del león permaneciendo en silencio unos segundos.

I’ll return soon, if the Creator allows it. I do it for the well-being of the family, who are my strength and soul.» Tira commented, «I would like to accompany you, but we are in the breeding season.» Her forehead rested against the lion’s brow, remaining silent for a few seconds.

Tormenta, el cachorro más pequeño dijo: papá, pero estarás en peligro ¡No vayas! con sus ojitos llenos de lágrimas y Rayo contesto, te admiro papá y con sus ojitos tristes y el alma acongojada, Tira la gran leona comento, démosle fuerza con un – ¡gran abrazo! – que no olvide que lo esperamos de vuelta en casa, aun con ese dolor apretado que sentía en el pecho, conteniendo un suspiro.

Storm, the smallest cub, said, «Daddy, but you’ll be in danger. Don’t go!» with his eyes full of tears, and Lightning replied, «I admire you, Daddy.» With his sad eyes and a heavy heart, Tira, the great lioness, commented, «Let’s give him strength with a big hug!» He said, «So he doesn’t forget that we’re waiting for him back home,» even with that tight pain in his chest, holding back a sigh.

Kanko, será por un corto tiempo, les recuerdo que quedan a cargo de la gran leona su madre y confió en que su pensamiento y sabiduría los cuidara bien, gracias querida leona.

Entonces todos se fueron a dormir esa noche que se hizo muy larga bajo aquel manto de estrellas.

So they all went to sleep that night, which seemed very long under that blanket of stars.

Antes de que el sol brillante regalara sus primeros rayos Kanko ya había partido desde que se fue a la leona le parecía el día triste y a él como si el sol parecía menos brillante. Pronto pondría todo su empeño y habilidades para subsistir y en su pensamiento firme estaba regresar a casa lo mejor que pudiera, entonces se le veía entre los matorrales sigiloso en busca de presa, sintiendo el hocico seco y con sed, rasguñado por arbustos y algunas espinas, sintiéndose en plena libertad en ese paraje en busca de su presa a la asechanza de ser un buen cazador, ¡Claro no sería nada fácil!

Before the bright sun had given its first rays, Kanko had already left. Since he had left, the day seemed sad to the lioness, and to him, as if the sun seemed less bright. Soon he would put all his effort and skills into surviving, and his firm thought was to return home as best he could. Then he could be seen stealthily among the bushes in search of prey, his snout feeling dry and thirsty, scratched by bushes and a few thorns, feeling completely free in that place, searching for his prey, waiting to be a good hunter. Of course, it wouldn’t be easy!

También alentaba a sus compañeros de caza, aun con sus patas agrietadas y sediento, con paso sigiloso y un ritmo sereno hasta que veía a su presa y usaba todas sus habilidades sintiéndose el mejor cazador. – ¡claro era el gran león! – En su pensamiento estaba su familia y el sustento.

He also encouraged his hunting companions, even with his chapped paws and thirst, with stealthy steps and a serene rhythm until he saw his prey and used all his skills, feeling like the best hunter—of course, it was the great lion!—his thoughts were of his family and his livelihood.

Mientras Tira la gran leona cuidaba a sus críos junto con las demás leonas enseñándoles maniobras de sobrevivencia sin dejar de mirar el horizonte con mirada larga en busca de Kanko, se mantenía arriba de la loma donde observaba sigilosamente para evitar la acechanza de los leopardos. Mientras los cachorros correteaban de aquí para allá en ese campo seco. Ella cargaba en sus hombros la responsabilidad completa.

While Tira, the great lioness, cared for her cubs with the other lionesses, teaching them survival skills while constantly scanning the horizon with a long, squinting gaze in search of Kanko, she remained high on the hill where she watched stealthily to avoid the leopards’ stalking. While the cubs scampered back and forth in that dry field, she carried the entire responsibility on her shoulders.

Cuando casi la reserva de alimentos se agotaba y las manadas se acercaban a su regazo. Por fin se veía venir a él gran león Kanko con su presa al igual que a todos sus compañeros de viaje.

When the food supply was almost exhausted and the packs were approaching his lap, the great lion Kanko was finally seen coming with his prey, along with all his traveling companions.

En aquel camino polvoroso llegaba de vencer muchas batallas, en su cuerpo traía cicatrices, sus patas cansadas y el lomo quemado de aquel sol fuerte y sofocante, sus garras un poco agrietadas y sus ojos cansados de haber enfrentado aquel camino polvoroso, aun así, al ver a su familia, por un instante olvido su pesadumbre y con otro rostro en su cara alboroto su gran melena de él gran león.

He had just returned from winning many battles on that dusty road. His body bore scars, his paws were tired, his back burned from that strong, sweltering sun, his claws a little cracked, and his eyes were tired from having faced that dusty road. Even so, upon seeing his family, for a moment he forgot his sorrow, and with another face on his face, he ruffled the great lion’s long mane.

¡Gran felicidad sintió al ver aquel bello recibimiento de su familia que salían a su encuentro! ¡El león había regresado victorioso! Todo lo que había pasado valía la pena, él estaba muy orgulloso de ser el gran león y su familia estaría tranquila con alimento, ¡toda la manada disfrutó del festejo y del festín!

He felt great happiness upon seeing the beautiful welcome from his family as they came out to meet him! The lion had returned victorious! Everything that had happened was worth it. He was very proud to be the great lion, and his family would be at peace with food. The whole pride enjoyed the celebration and the feast!

Tira la gran leona poso su cabeza en la frente de Kanko y le susurro, bien hecho, ahora si los cachorros le externaban las gracias por ser un buen papa. Gratamente satisfechos se recostaron en el regazo de Tira la leona.

Tira, the great lioness, laid her head on Kanko’s forehead and whispered, «Well done!» Now the cubs would express their thanks for being a good father. Pleasantly satisfied, they lay down on Tira the lioness’s lap.

Satisfecho Kanko subió a la loma para estar observando a los leopardos que no se fueran a acercar. Ante las pequeñas gotitas de lluvia que anunciaban la leve llegada del agua.

Satisfied, Kanko climbed the hill to watch the leopards so they wouldn’t come closer. The small drops of rain announced the gentle arrival of water.

Mientras las estrellas brillantes anunciaban una noche para descansar en familia.

While the bright stars announced a night to rest with the family.
