SPECIAL EDITORIAL | TRIBUTE TO FRANCIS: Francis, the of Hope. One month after his passing, the world still hears his voice…

Tras la histórica renuncia del Papa Benedicto XVI en 2013, el mundo fue testigo del nacimiento de un nuevo capítulo espiritual: el 13 de marzo, Jorge Mario Bergoglio fue elegido como el nuevo Papa. Así comenzó el pontificado de Francisco, el primer Papa latinoamericano, con una frase que conmovió al mundo entero: “Recen por mí.”

Following the historic resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013, the world witnessed the birth of a new spiritual chapter: on March 13, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as the new Pope. Thus began the pontificate of Francis, the first Latin American Pope, with a phrase that moved the entire world: “Pray for me.”

Doce años y 39 días después, a sus 88 años, el Papa Francisco —nacido el 17 de diciembre de 1936 en el barrio de Las Flores en Buenos Aires, barrio humilde donde le encantaba dar sus misas y recorrer sus calles, un hombre que le gustaba la ciudad y su gente. — Nos deja un legado de humildad, fe y coraje. Llamado a ser un mensajero de paz, aún en su enfermedad, mantuvo firme su convicción y serenidad, sostenido por su fe inquebrantable y por las oraciones de millones de fieles en todo el mundo.

Twelve years and 39 days later, at 88 years old, Pope Francis—born on December 17, 1936, in the Las Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires, a humble neighborhood where he loved to say Mass and walk its streets, a man who loved the city and its people—leaves us a legacy of humility, faith, and courage. Called to be a messenger of peace, even in his illness, he remained steadfast in his conviction and serenity, sustained by his unwavering faith and the prayers of millions of faithful around the world.

UN PAPA ENFERMO PERO INQUEBRANTABLE / A SICK BUT UNBREAKABLE POPE

Durante sus últimos días, el Papa fue hospitalizado en el Hospital Gemelli de Roma, aquejado por una bronquitis severa. A pesar de que intentó restarle importancia, los análisis médicos confirmaron una infección respiratoria polimicrobiana que requirió respiración asistida, reposo absoluto y la suspensión total de su agenda. Aun así, su espíritu jamás se apagó.

During his final days, the Pope was hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, suffering from severe bronchitis. Although he tried to downplay it, medical tests confirmed a polymicrobial respiratory infection that required ventilator support, absolute rest, and the complete suspension of his schedule. Even so, his spirit never dimmed.

EL PAPA DE LOS PUEBLOS / THE POPE OF THE PEOPLES

Francisco fue cercano, sencillo, directo. Jamás olvidaremos su emotivo mensaje al pueblo mexicano, un ejemplo de su carisma humano. Recordamos hoy con especial emoción sus palabras dirigidas al pueblo mexicano, reflejo de su cercanía, su calidez y su profunda conexión con los pueblos del mundo:

Francis was approachable, simple, and direct. We will never forget his moving message to the Mexican people, an example of his human charisma. Today, we recall with special emotion his words addressed to the Mexican people, a reflection of his closeness, his warmth, and his deep connection with the peoples of the world:

“Sé que ustedes están reunidos en el Zócalo y están reunidos para recibir y dar. No están reunidos para estarse callados, están reunidos para hacer algún lío, algo de movimiento con alegría, para recibir un mensaje y transmitir un mensaje… Nunca se olviden de ese pañuelito blanco: es la esperanza de todos los pecadores que somos nosotros. ¡Que Dios los bendiga, que la Guadalupana los cuide… y no se olviden de rezar por mí!”

“I know you are gathered in the Zócalo, and you are gathered to receive and give. You are not gathered to remain silent; you are gathered to make a fuss, to move with joy, to receive a message and transmit a message… Never forget that little white handkerchief: it is the hope of all of us sinners. May God bless you, may the Virgin of Guadalupe watch over you… and don’t forget to pray for me!”

Tan humano, tan directo, tan nuestro. Con sus gestos, con sus silencios, con su voz pausada y su mirada compasiva, fue el rostro humano de la Iglesia.

So human, so direct, so truly ours. With his gestures, his silences, his measured voice, and his compassionate gaze, he was the human face of the Church.

EL PAPA FRANCISCO Y LA INTELIGENCIA ARTIFICIAL: SU ÚLTIMO MENSAJE GLOBAL / POPE FRANCIS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: HIS LAST GLOBAL MESSAGE

En su última aparición internacional, del 14 de Junio del 2024 durante la 50ª Cumbre del G7, en la que a su ingreso saludo uno a uno, Francisco abordó un tema crucial: el impacto de la Inteligencia Artificial. Su discurso fue más que una reflexión tecnológica; fue un grito de advertencia espiritual y ético:

In his final international appearance, on June 14, 2024, during the 50th G7 Summit, where he greeted everyone upon entering, Francis addressed a crucial topic: the impact of Artificial Intelligence. His speech was more than a technological reflection; it was a spiritual and ethical warning:

“La Inteligencia Artificial representa una revolución cognitiva. Nos entusiasma, pero también nos asusta. Corre el riesgo de desdibujar la dignidad humana si delegamos a las máquinas decisiones esenciales sobre la vida, la justicia y la convivencia. Ninguna tecnología es neutral: toda herramienta lleva la huella de quien la diseña y la intención de quien la utiliza.”

“Artificial Intelligence represents a cognitive revolution. We’re excited about it, but it also frightens us. It risks undermining human dignity if we delegate essential decisions about life, justice, and coexistence to machines. No technology is neutral: every tool bears the imprint of its designer and the intention of its user.”

Llamó a una ética clara, a lo que él mismo denominó en 2020 “algorética”, un marco moral para el diseño y uso de algoritmos. Insistió en que ningún avance técnico debería ocultar decisiones disfrazadas de eficiencia económica o despojar al ser humano de su derecho a decidir, sentir y vivir con libertad.

He called for clear ethics, what he himself called «algoretics» in 2020, a moral framework for the design and use of algorithms. He insisted that no technical advance should obscure decisions disguised as economic efficiency or deprive human beings of their right to decide, feel, and live freely.

“Agradezcamos a la tecnología como herramienta, pero no permitamos que se convierta en amo. Que la Inteligencia Artificial esté al servicio del ser humano y no al revés.”

“Let us be grateful for technology as a tool, but let us not allow it to become our master. Let Artificial Intelligence serve humanity, not the other way around.”

FRANCISCO ETERNO, EL PAPA ETERNO / FRANCIS ETERNAL, THE ETERNAL POPE

Our Pope Francis, one might say, was an icon in the times of a centuries-old institution.

Me encanta convivir con gente por eso me quedé en Santa Marta, una casa de huéspedes de 210 habitaciones de las cuales 40 son de la Santa Sede. Me encanta comer en el comedor y las misas porque me hice Cura para estar con la gente, agradece a Dios…Ciudadano del alma y siempre fui muy callejero de Cardenal.  

I love spending time with people, which is why I stayed at Santa Marta, a guesthouse with 210 rooms, 40 of which belong to the Holy See. I love eating in the dining room and attending Mass because I became a priest to be with the people. I thank God… I’m a citizen at heart, and I’ve always been a streetwise Cardenal resident.

Nuestro querido Papa se acostaba temprano y después de un día muy intenso en actividades, como cada noche algo ligero de cenar y a ojear un poco las noticias, solo un repaso se diez minutos de las  noticias internacionales y poco más, duerme plácido, coge rápido el sueño aunque a las seis de la mañana siempre se levanta ya que le gustaba dormir cada día la siesta de 45 minutos hasta a veces una hora, eso le hacía mucho bien, así lo decía.

Our dear Pope went to bed early and after a very busy day of activities, like every night having something light for dinner and a quick look at the news, just a ten minute review of the international news and little else, he slept peacefully, fell asleep quickly although he always got up at six in the morning as he liked to take a nap every day from 45 minutes to sometimes an hour, that did him a lot of good, that’s what he said.

Allí en la Residencia de Santa Martha, le alcanzaron a llevar el café y luego en un rato ya empezaba a encontrarse con mal cuerpo, resistiéndose a llevarle al hospital a revisarlo, decidió esperar descansando…  y a casi un mes desde ese Marzo 23 donde salía de alta médica y que pudo al menos ver la Pascua que sería celebrada tanto en católicos como en ortodoxos pidió que se irradie la luz de la Paz sobre toda Tierra Santa y sobre el mundo entero.

There at the Santa Martha Residence, they managed to bring him coffee and after a while he began to feel unwell, refusing to take him to the hospital to check him, he decided to wait and rest… and almost a month after that March 23rd when he was discharged and could at least see Easter, which would be celebrated by both Catholics and Orthodox, he asked that the light of Peace be radiated over the entire Holy Land and the entire world.

Un icono se podría decir era nuestro Papa Francisco en los tiempos de una institución multisecular.

Nuestro querido Papa Francisco se encontraba en Santa Marta y su última aparición fue el día anterior en la Plaza de San Pedro, pidiendo bajar entre sus fieles y allí fue aclamado por muchísima gente que a su paso le iban dando la mano y dejándole tocar a sus hijos pequeños para su bendición. Bendición que sin saberlo, sería la última vez que pasara con vida con su papamóvil alrededor de sus queridos asistentes que con todo amor le esperaban después de haber oficiado la Misa y Bendiciones de “Urbi et Orby” el último Domingo de Resurrección…  Resurrección…que honró con sus palabras cercanas: «Hermanos y Hermanas buena Pascua» ante 50.000 fieles y sin apenas voz su fuerza era para todos por dar su bendición y pidiendo Paz para los conflictos mundiales, negándose al rearme y el desprecio por los migrantes…

Our beloved Pope Francis was in Santa Marta and his last appearance was the day before in St. Peter’s Square, asking to get off among his faithful and there he was acclaimed by many people who as he passed by took his hand and let him touch their small children for his blessing. Blessing that without knowing it, would be the last time he passed by alive with his popemobile around his beloved assistants who with all love awaited him after having officiated the Mass and Blessings of «Urbi et Orby» last Easter Sunday… Resurrection…which he honored with his close words: «Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter» before 50,000 faithful and barely a voice his strength was for everyone by giving his blessing and asking for Peace for world conflicts, refusing rearmament and contempt for migrants…

Entradas las primeras horas de un veintiuno de Abril, todos tenemos una fecha fijada, en Dios, como cuando nacemos…vivimos, seguimos o nos marchamos.

As the early hours of April 21st approach, we all have a date set, in God’s words, just as when we are born…we live, we continue, or we leave.

….Llegadas las seis de la mañana se despertó como cada día, su hora marcaba el comienzo, pero esa mañana algo no iba bien, se dedicó a su aseo diario y luego su café que le ofrecieran como cada mañana que se le hacía llegar, algo no estaba del todo bien, esa angustiosa tos y esa falta de ánimo le hizo pararse a reposar un poco más, si seguía sintiéndose así, y le aconsejaron marchar al hospital, esta vez dijo que no, quería estar donde Dios lo llamara y que libremente se entregaba desde Santa Marta; esa tos le volvía, esa falta de aire le pudo y llegó, y quedó en coma, para cuando entraron el médico lo pudo constatar así, su muerte sería a las siete treinta y cinco de la mañana.

No pasando las 24 horas de estos hechos de su fallecimiento, ante la incredulidad de muchos que lo vieron el día anterior saludable y sin cánulas de respiración aconsejado aun por sus doctores, en convalecencia después de haber estado más de un mes ingresado en el Hospital a causa de aquella bronquitis que se le agravó y se le derivó en una neumonía bilateral. El Dr Andrea Arcangeli, director de la Dirección de Salud e Higiene del Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano, publica ese informe oficial sobre el fallecimiento mediante una tanatografía electrocardiográfica de este mismo día. “Nuestro Pontífice llego a su final tras la causa de ese ictus cerebral y un colapso cardiocirculatorio irreversible a sus 88 años, ya el Lunes de Pascua.”

No pasando las 24 horas de estos hechos de su fallecimiento, ante la incredulidad de muchos que lo vieron el día anterior saludable y sin cánulas de respiración aconsejado aun por sus doctores, en convalecencia después de haber estado más de un mes ingresado en el Hospital a causa de aquella bronquitis que se le agravó y se le derivó en una neumonía bilateral. Nuestro Representante Mayor ante Dios digno del sillón de San Pedro, máximo Pontífice El Papa Francisco, primer Papa Jesuita y latinoamericano de la historia, de misión humilde y rezando en la Capilla Paulina, un ser tranquilo que tejía puentes y era integrador sin prejuicios de personas de bajos recursos y sin techo, siempre invitaba a comer a grupos de personas humildes e inmigrantes dándoles ropas y duchas desde donde vinieran y recibía a mujeres trans y LGTBIQI acoger a la comunidad , abogaba para  que  los sacerdotes se puedan casar y formó una Cumbre en contra de la pederastia. A los transexuales que buscaban su bendición les bendecía sin prejuicio alguno:

Deja parientes como una hermana muy mayor e impedida y sobrinos que mantenían cercanías a través de video llamadas y temas diversos como su equipo favorito allá en la Argentina. Su buen humor era algo destacado y contagiaba tanto eso como su compasión hacia los necesitados, como su aferrada idea de ir contra los pederastas y el acoso ese dentro de la Iglesia, y estaba de parte de la víctima siempre.

He leaves behind relatives, such as a very old, disabled sister and nephews who remained close through video calls and various topics, such as his favorite sports team back in Argentina. His good humor was a highlight, and it was contagious, as was his compassion for those in need, and his firm commitment to fighting pedophiles and harassment within the Church. He always stood by the victim.

Medio millón de fieles al Funeral, más los jefes de Estado y Monarcas de todo el mundo asistieron y se llevó a cabo el recorrido del  Papamóvil como así lo quiso el sumo pontífice antes de fallecer en su testamento. El mismo que fue publicado por el Vaticano tras su fallecimiento el 21 de abril de 2025, contiene instrucciones sobre su sepultura y expresa su voluntad de ser enterrado de manera sencilla en la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor. El Papa solicitó que su sepulcro sea sencillo, sin adornos, y que solo tenga la inscripción «Franciscus». También manifestó que su vida y ministerio fueron confiados a la Madre de Nuestro Señor, María Santísima.
