CB: Chechy, tú naciste en el amor de un hogar adoptivo. ¿Cómo influyó ese regalo en tu identidad, tu vocación de servicio y tu forma de ver el mundo? CB: Chechy, you were born into the love of an adoptive home. How did that gift influence your identity, your calling to serve, and your way of seeing the world?

Fue el mayor regalo que recibí por parte de Dios y de mis padres, pues al recibir bondad, amor puro y desinteresado sembró en mi generosidad y gratitud.

It was the greatest gift I received from God and my parents, because receiving kindness, pure and selfless love sowed in me generosity and gratitude.

CB: Tu infancia estuvo marcada por la música, el carnaval y las verbenas. ¿Qué representa hoy para ti ese legado musical y festivo que viviste en Barranquilla y Cartagena? CB: Your childhood was marked by music, carnival, and open-air dances. What does that musical and festive legacy you experienced in Barranquilla and Cartagena represent for you today?

Definitivamente marcó en mi la pasión por la música y sus diferentes facetas, pues conocí ritmos caribes, que eran ajenos a mí, pues venia de la capital de Colombia donde las costumbres son sumamente diferentes.
Vivir las manifestaciones culturales en el carnaval, ver a mi familia caracterizando diferentes personajes, los bailes en las calles, las familias enteras unidas en un solo sentir, fue un nuevo descubrimiento de mis pasiones, el sonido del tambor, del llamador, de las maracas, el sombrero vueltiaó. Disfraces como la marimonda, las negritas Puloy, el africano, son de negros, el cumbiambero, el hombre sin cabeza, el paloteo- las caderas cadenciosas de los bailes tradicionales, el mapalé, la puya, el vallenato, la champeta, los africanos, es otro
mundo. Las palmeras que se visten de verde desde el avión cuando llegas a barranquilla, te cambia la perspectiva de vida y el calor te recorre cada célula y te marca para toda la vida. Esta ciudad tiene un encanto interesante, un color, un sabor y una gente que la hace única en el mundo.

It definitely shaped my passion for music and its various facets, as I was introduced to Caribbean rhythms, which were foreign to me, coming from the capital of Colombia, where the customs are extremely different.
Experiencing the cultural manifestations of Carnival, seeing my family in different roles, the dances in the streets, entire families united in a single feeling, was a new discovery of my passions. The sound of the drum, the caller, the maracas, the sombrero vueltiaó. Costumes like the marimonda, the Negritas Puloy, the Africano (which are black), the cumbiambero, the headless man, the paloteo (the rhythmic hips of traditional dances), the mapalé, the puya, the vallenato, the champeta, the Africanos—it’s another world. The palm trees that turn green from the plane when you arrive in Barranquilla change your perspective on life, and the warmth runs through every cell and leaves a lasting impression on you. This city has an interesting charm, a color, a flavor, and a people that make it unique in the world.

The Caribbean’s idiosyncrasy has a fabulous quality that overwhelms you, and for foreigners to feel it, they must come and experience our essence. There are thousands of cases of tourists who have said I’M STAYING IN BARRANQUILLA. Barranquilla’s culture is DELICIOUS—just like Adalberto Santiago’s song.

CB: ¿Qué significa para ti ‘honrar las raíces’ y cómo lo aplicas desde tu papel como gestora cultural, empresaria y comunicadora? / What does «honoring your roots» mean to you, and how do you apply it in your role as a cultural manager, entrepreneur, and communicator?

Te cuento que fue totalmente determinante. No hay sitios que yo visite, que no lleve mis raíces, mi sentido cultural, mis patrones de convivencia en paz. Empecé a investigar mis raíces caribeñas, adentrarme en la cultura de mis ancestros, porque sabía que mis padres genéticos fueron costeños, y era algo que me causaba mucha curiosidad. También es un homenaje a mis padres adoptivos y a una familia que me acogió como propia, que mi tía abuela me recordaba constantemente que “Madre no es la que pare, sino la que cría”, de observar una madre valiente, que sacó adelante unas hijas a pesar de haber quedado viuda, que no se dejó caer en medio de las adversidades, sino que se levantó, se repuso y siguió adelante. Los dulces de mis tías, la sonoridad, las costumbres eso jamás se olvida. Incluso como empresaria y comunicadora lo puedes ver y escuchar, en MALANGA RADIO, y como gestor cultural vinculada siempre en nuestras manifestaciones culturales como el carnaval en Barranquilla.

I’ll tell you, it was absolutely decisive. There aren’t any places I visit that don’t carry my roots, my cultural sense, my patterns of peaceful coexistence. I began to investigate my Caribbean roots, delving into the culture of my ancestors, because I knew my genetic parents were coastal, and it was something that sparked my curiosity. It’s also a tribute to my adoptive parents and to a family that welcomed me as their own, to my great-aunt who constantly reminded me that «A mother is not the one who gives birth, but the one who raises.» It’s a tribute to observing a brave mother who raised her daughters despite being widowed, who didn’t give up in the face of adversity, but rather got up, recovered, and carried on. My aunts’ sweets, the sounds, the customs—you’ll never forget them. You can even see and hear them as a businesswoman and communicator on MALANGA RADIO, and as a cultural manager, I’m always involved in our cultural events like the Carnival in Barranquilla.

Llevar la cumbia, el folclor, las raíces y la tradición al ser jefe de prensa de diferentes entidades culturales y orgullosa de ser hoy la Dir. de Comunicaciones de una organización tan importante como FUNDACION TAMBÓ, la cual es un operador de carnaval, con XXXI años de historia realizando La Noche de Tambó, la rueda de cumbia más grande del mundo, que es el abrebocas al carnaval y ser parte de la rueda donde más de 20 mil personas bailan al unísono , que sin tintes políticos, religiosos , de cualquier nacionalidad, sepan o no bailar con las técnicas requeridas, no es un impedimento para que se unan en un solo sentir, para danzar alrededor de la única tarima circular de la festividad y entregar al mundo la historia de la Cumbia, sus raíces y tradición, eso no tiene precio. Es una gran oportunidad para aprender al lado de unos maestros tan respetados como los son TAMBÓ, con un director general como Lisandro Polo a quien admiro, quien fue rey momo de las carnestolendas, y que sus principios fundamentales es el respeto y el valor por el folclor es un sentimiento que me emociona y me invade.

Bringing cumbia, folklore, roots and tradition to being the press chief of different cultural entities and proud to be today the Communications Director of an organization as important as FUNDACION TAMBÓ, which is a carnival operator, with XXXI years of history carrying out La Noche de Tambó, the largest cumbia wheel in the world, which is the appetizer to the carnival and being part of the wheel where more than 20 thousand people dance in unison, without political or religious overtones, of any nationality, whether or not they know how to dance with the required techniques, is not an impediment for them to join in a single feeling, to dance around the only circular platform of the festivity and give the world the history of Cumbia, its roots and tradition, that is priceless. It’s a great opportunity to learn alongside such respected maestros as TAMBÓ, with a general director like Lisandro Polo whom I admire, who was king of carnival, and whose fundamental principles are respect and value for folklore. This is a feeling that moves and overwhelms me.

El Camino Profesional y la Emprendedora Social / The Professional Path and the Social Entrepreneur

CB: De psicóloga a locutora, pasando por la gerencia y las relaciones públicas: ¿cómo has logrado integrar todas tus áreas de conocimiento en un propósito único? / From psychologist to broadcaster, including management and public relations: how have you managed to integrate all your areas of expertise into a single purpose?

Mi profesión me ha servido siempre en el camino, pues me permite una visión de los demás es diferente, puedo lograr comprender aún más sus necesidades y carencias. Me retiré de las empresas privadas y públicas debido a que algunas políticas laborales no coincidían con mi sentido de la vida, y la equidad ha sido un valor importante en mi formación.
Al estar en RRHH no podían ser Recursos Inhumanos y decidí emprender y trabajar en equipo con entidades que siguieran la misma filosofía de vida y por la pasión de servir y apalancar marcas comprometidas con esto. Hoy en día siento fervientemente que Dios se encarga de llevarte en el camino y tú debes ser un vaso de barro en Sus Manos.

My profession has always served me well along the way, as it allows me to see others differently, allowing me to better understand their needs and shortcomings. I retired from private and public companies because some labor policies didn’t align with my life’s purpose, and equity has been an important value in my training.
Being in HR, I couldn’t be in Human Resources, so I decided to take on a new path and work as a team with organizations that shared the same philosophy of life, and out of a passion for serving and leveraging brands committed to this. Today, I fervently feel that God is in charge of leading you along the path, and you must be a clay vessel in His Hands.

CB: ¿Cuál fue el momento clave que te hizo decir: ‘Quiero tener mi propia
emisora, mi propio sello’? / CB: What was the key moment that made you say, «I want to have my own station, my own label»?

Esta idea venia en la mente de mi esposo Alfredo Pinillos mi compañero de vida y mi gran amor desde hace 22años y de la mía, ya habíamos empezado a comprar elementos requeridos como micrófonos, consolas, unidades, sonidos y en pandemia fue el momento propicio para tomar la decisión, ya que fue un tiempo de encierro donde escuchábamos la misma música en las emisoras tradicionales y nos parecía muy plano.

This idea came to the mind of my husband Alfredo Pinillos, my life partner and my great love for 22 years and mine, we had already started to buy required elements such as microphones, consoles, units, sounds and during the pandemic it was the opportune moment to make the decision, since it was a time of confinement where we listened to the same music on traditional radio stations and it seemed very flat to us.

Un día sentado en la sala de nuestra casa, lo discutimos y teníamos los elementos, pero no teníamos el nombre que representara el caribe, que fuera sonoro y que se identificara con nuestra cultura barranquillera.

One day, sitting in our living room, we discussed it and had the necessary elements, but we didn’t have a name that represented the Caribbean, that was sonorous, and that identified with our Barranquilla culture.

Y surgió MALANGA, un tubérculo que nace de la tierra, Pertenece a la familia de plantas polinesias conocida como “colocasia esculenta”, una especie encontrada por los europeos al sur del continente. De allí, fue llevada a África desde donde se extendió su cultivo. En aquel momento era consumida por los aborígenes. En la actualidad, la que se consume pertenece a especies del Caribe, América del Sur, Asia y las islas Canarias. Hay tres variedades distintas: blanca, amarilla y con vetas moradas. Sus hojas son grandes y en forma de corazón, de un color verde intenso y brillante. Además, presenta un sistema de raíces tuberosas que almacenan nutrientes, lo cual la convierte en una excelente fuente de alimento. Es la descripción perfecta para nuestra emisora, lo cierto es que es muy sabrosa y saludable como la música.

And so came Malanga, a tuber that grows from the ground. It belongs to the Polynesian plant family known as Colocasia esculenta, a species found by Europeans in the south of the continent. From there, it was brought to Africa, where its cultivation spread. At that time, it was consumed by the Aborigines. Currently, the one consumed belongs to species from the Caribbean, South America, Asia, and the Canary Islands. There are three different varieties: white, yellow, and purple-veined. Its leaves are large and heart-shaped, a deep, glossy green. It also has a tuberous root system that stores nutrients, making it an excellent food source. This is the perfect description for our station; the truth is, it’s as tasty and healthy as music.

CB: MALANGA RADIO se ha convertido en una emisora de culto para melómanos y coleccionistas. ¿Qué fue lo más desafiante de crear este sueño desde cero y con tu esposo? / MALANGA RADIO has become a cult radio station for music lovers and collectors. What was the most challenging aspect of creating this dream from scratch with your husband?

El desafío mayor fue posesionar la marca, en nuestra cultura hay muchos celos, competencia desleal y piedras en el camino. Pero nunca nos ha preocupado los comentarios (buenos o malos) seguimos adelante haciendo la labor como hormigas, paso a paso y con la convicción que la música une continentes, crea pasión y llena con sus melodías los espacios de reflexión.

The biggest challenge was establishing the brand. In our culture, there’s a lot of jealousy, unfair competition, and obstacles in the way. But we’ve never worried about the comments (good or bad). We continue to work like ants, step by step, and with the conviction that music unites continents, creates passion, and fills spaces for reflection with its melodies.

CB: ¿Cómo logras el equilibrio entre ser madre, esposa, empresaria,
comunicadora, gestora cultural y mujer de fe? / How do you balance being a mother, wife, businesswoman, communicator, cultural manager, and woman of faith?

Cris, es un equilibrio delicado porque cada uno tiene su momento, afortunadamente cuento con una familia nuclear maravillosa, mi esposo vinculado a la música siendo el director general de MALANGA RADIO , mi hija viéndome desde pequeña trabajando fuerte y tenazmente, mi hijo atento a cuanta cosa se me ocurre, la empresa la manejamos en familia y la Fe nos une porque todos somos creyentes de Su Poder y misericordia, SIEMPRE de la Mano de Dios porque Él nos encontró y nos sacó de la sombra hace más de 20 años y es nuestro eje central.

Cris, it is a delicate balance because everyone has their moment, fortunately I have a wonderful nuclear family, my husband linked to music being the general director of MALANGA RADIO, my daughter watching me since she was little working hard and tenaciously, my son attentive to everything that occurs to me, we run the company as a family and Faith unites us because we are all believers in His Power and mercy, ALWAYS in the Hand of God because He found us and took us out of the shadows more than 20 years ago and He is our central axis.

La Voz de una Generación / The Voice of a Generation

CB: «Lo que dice Chechy» y «Conectando personas, inspirando cambios» son más que programas: son faros de conciencia. ¿Cuál ha sido el mensaje más poderoso que has compartido al aire? / «What Chechy Says» and «Connecting People, Inspiring Change» are more than just programs: they’re beacons of awareness. What has been the most powerful message you’ve shared on air?

Son dos nichos diferentes, pues las entrevistas con salseros son conversaciones con el ser humano más allá del artista, es un momento de reflexionar de sus vidas y que los conozcan en su humanidad y sus sentimientos. Y en el otro nicho una oportunidad magnífica para enlazar y crear conciencia de la responsabilidad que tiene la humanidad con el ambiente, con su cuidado y también con su manera de construir una sociedad más empática. El mensaje es de EMPATÍA Y CONCIENCIA.

These are two different niches, as interviews with salsa artists are conversations with the human being beyond the artist; it’s a moment to reflect on their lives and get to know them in their humanity and their feelings. The other niche is a magnificent opportunity to connect and raise awareness of humanity’s responsibility to the environment, to its care, and also to its way of building a more empathetic society. The message is one of EMPATHY AND AWARENESS.

CB: ¿Cómo te preparas para que cada programa no solo informe, sino también
inspire y movilice a tus oyentes? How do you prepare so that each program not only informs, but also inspires and moves your listeners?

Los programas son orgánicos, nacen del corazón y de la necesidad de visibilizar sus sentimientos, de aprendizaje para las nuevas generaciones, para construir y que sean ejemplos claros de inspiración. Precisamente ese ha sido el éxito que tiene porque no son entrevistas planas, son conversaciones deliciosas que nos permiten entretenernos, aprender y reconocer que las estrellas son de carne y hueso, que sufren, que ríen y que tienen una vida normal.

The programs are organic, born from the heart and from the need to make their feelings visible, to teach new generations, to build, and to serve as clear examples of inspiration. This has been precisely their success because they are not flat interviews; they are delightful conversations that allow us to be entertained, learn, and recognize that the stars are real, that they suffer, that they laugh, and that they lead normal lives.

CB: Has dado voz a artistas salseros emergentes. ¿Qué papel juegas tú, como mujer radial, en preservar y proyectar la herencia afrocaribeña desde la música? / You’ve given voice to emerging salsa artists. What role do you play, as a radio host, in preserving and promoting Afro-Caribbean heritage through music?

Bien lo has dichos Cris, como mujer ha sido un camino espinoso, es un mar lleno de tiburones machistas, que en sus creencias la mujer esta para “otras cosas”, poco a poco he ido avanzando y saben que conmigo es con respeto al micrófono, a la audiencia y sobre todo a la juventud que se quieran dedicar a esta labor. LO QUE DICE CHECHY es un programa para difundir la música nueva, obviamente que la de antaño, pero con un respeto absoluto por el esfuerzo que están teniendo esta generación en de sus recursos propios “a pulmón records” ya que no hay disqueras que los representen y la industria ha cambiado mucho. También hay
una tendencia terrible a mi manera de ver en la locución de hoy, que es un “estilo muy caribe, muy vulgar que choca con el profesionalismo que se debe tener ante un micrófono”.

You said it well, Cris. As a woman, it’s been a thorny path. It’s a sea full of sexist sharks, whose beliefs are that women are for «other things.» Little by little, I’ve been making progress, and they know that with me, it’s with respect for the microphone, the audience, and especially the youth who want to dedicate themselves to this work. LO QUE DICE CHECHY is a program to promote new music, obviously the music of yesteryear, but with absolute respect for the efforts this generation is making, using their own resources, «hard-earned records,» since there are no record labels to represent them and the industry has changed a lot. There’s also a terrible tendency, in my opinion, in today’s voiceovers, which is «a very Caribbean, very vulgar style that clashes with the professionalism that should be displayed before a microphone.»

Diplomado, Formación y Transformación / Diploma, Training and Transformation

CB: Actualmente estás desarrollando un diplomado en Colombia. ¿Cuál es su objetivo y por qué es necesario en este momento cultural y social del país? CB: You’re currently pursuing a diploma program in Colombia. What’s its goal, and why is it necessary at this current cultural and social moment in the country?

Estos espacios se hacen necesarios para la formación, para crear juventudes comprometidas, para afianzar conocimientos. Estamos en un mundo de inmediatez que se nos olvida que no es creer saber, es cultivar nuestros conocimientos, es prepararse continuamente para no quedarse rezagado. Estamos en un momento de complejidad en el País, de cambios drásticos en la forma como los jóvenes visualizan el futuro y las redes sociales nos arropan tan fácilmente y muchos de ellos quieren ser influencers de la nada, sin formación alguna.

These spaces are necessary for training, for creating engaged youth, and for consolidating knowledge. We live in a world of immediacy, where we forget that it’s not about believing we know, it’s about cultivating our knowledge, about continually preparing ourselves so as not to fall behind. We are in a time of complexity in the country, of drastic changes in the way young people envision the future, and social media so easily overwhelms us, and many of them want to be influencers out of nowhere, without any training.

CB: ¿Qué tipo de impacto esperas generar con esta propuesta formativa, y cómo crees que puede transformar vidas? / CB: What kind of impact do you hope to generate with this training proposal, and how do you think it can transform lives?

El impacto social se construye con credibilidad, son los mismos estudiantes que pidieron un diplomado pues estaba desarrollando talleres en el año anterior, pero ellos mismos se están exigiendo lo cual quiere decir que la tarea la estamos haciendo bien y que tienen sed de conocimiento y de mejorar sus talentos y cualidades. Tengo público de todas las edades y eso me emociona porque estudiantes de bachillerato, que quieren mejorar sus habilidades, e incluso recientemente una familia completa se inscribió pues quieren participar y mejorar su
comunicación al interior de sus hogar.

Social impact is built on credibility. These are the same students who requested a diploma because I was running workshops last year. They are challenging themselves, which means we’re doing a good job and that they’re hungry for knowledge and to improve their talents and qualities. I have audiences of all ages, and that excites me because high school students, who want to improve their skills, and even an entire family recently signed up because they want to participate and improve their communication within their homes.

Compromiso Social y Ambiental / Social and Environmental Commitment

CB: Has estado al frente de causas como PETLOVERS, ABRAZOS DEL ALMA y #Ambientalisto. ¿Qué te mueve a donar tu tiempo a estas iniciativas? You’ve spearheaded causes such as PETLOVERS, ABRAZOS DEL ALMA, and #Ambientalisto. What motivates you to donate your time to these initiatives?

Sabes cris, me mueve lo generoso que ha sido DIOS en mi vida, como mi madre me entrega en adopción y como EL me da un hogar maravilloso, que me rodeó de AMOR que aun en medio de las dificultades de todas las familias, estuvieron para mí, que me enseñaron las costumbres de sus ancestros, que se preocuparon por mi educación, de ser un ejemplo a seguir. Las cosas poco agradables que pasé en mi infancia les dejé en el olvido en el pasado y esa capacidad de mirar hacia adelante y no detenerme a juzgar es lo que me ha permitido sembrar mi pasión.

You know, Chris, I’m moved by how generous God has been in my life. How my mother gave me up for adoption and how He gave me a wonderful home. He surrounded me with love, and even amidst the difficulties of all families, they were there for me. They taught me the customs of their ancestors, and they cared about my upbringing, and they were a role model. I’ve left the unpleasant things I went through in my childhood in the past, and that ability to look forward and not pause to judge is what has allowed me to sow my passion.

Las labores que desarrollo me llenan el corazón y el alma, ver y conocer tantas personas valiosas que se desprenden de egoísmos y de temores y batallan día a día por sus vidas, es ejemplarizante sus vidas, como enfrentando diagnósticos fuertes se aferran a la vida, a la Fe, a la esperanza y se refugian en Dios.

The work I do fills my heart and soul. Seeing and meeting so many valuable people who let go of selfishness and fears and fight day after day for their lives is exemplary. Their lives are exemplary, as they face serious diagnoses and cling to life, faith, and hope, and take refuge in God.

CB: ¿Cuál consideras que es tu mayor aporte como comunicadora a la defensa del medio ambiente? /What do you consider to be your greatest contribution as a communicator to environmental protection?

El programa de radio sin lugar a dudas. Fíjate que hace dos años me vinculé a unas capacitaciones maravillosas en una entidad en mi ciudad Barranquilla, La Corporación autónoma regional Atlántico, allí conocí un líder magnifico, Jesús León Insignares, un ser humano increíble, realmente inspirador, que a través de su ejemplo y de su equipo de trabajo nos enseñó a mirar con otra perspectiva el ambiente, con su ejemplo, con los conocimientos dados a través de otra entidad preciosa el ICONTEC nos certificó como AMBIENTALISTOS y hay un antes y un después de esos diplomados, se activó en todos un verdadero amor por al cuidado y el gestionar recursos para nuestros territorios.

Two years ago, I participated in some wonderful training programs at an organization in my city, Barranquilla, called the Atlántico Regional Autonomous Corporation.
