FLORAS IN ACTION: Sorority and resistance in the struggle of migrant women

Tras el impacto social y económico de la pandemia del COVID-19, un grupo de mujeres de la comunidad de Mataró capital de la comarca del Meresme, decidió organizarse para responder a una de las problemáticas más urgentes que en ese momento afrontaban: la vulnerabilidad de las mujeres migrantes. Y es que, la migración en España es una realidad compleja, marcada por situaciones de adversidad y discriminación. Ante este escenario, nació FLORAS EN ACCIÓN, una colectiva de mujeres vecinal de carácter social (actualmente  constituida como asociación), que se ha convertido en un espacio de apoyo y resistencia para quienes enfrentan condiciones precarias al llegar al país, especialmente mujeres.

Following the social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of women from the community of Mataró, capital of the Meresme region, decided to organize to respond to one of the most urgent problems they faced at that time: the vulnerability of migrant women. Migration in Spain is a complex reality, marked by situations of adversity and discrimination. Against this backdrop, FLORAS EN ACCION was born, a collective of neighborhood women of a social nature (currently constituted as an association), which has become a space of support and resistance for those who face precarious conditions upon arriving in the country, especially women.

La mayoría de las integrantes de esta iniciativa provienen de Latinoamérica, aunque también hay participantes de Sudáfrica. A través de su labor, han visibilizado las dificultades que enfrentan las migrantes en situación irregular: desde la discriminación en el acceso al empleo y a los servicios básicos, hasta la explotación laboral. Con esfuerzo y dedicación, han tejido una red de apoyo para aquellas mujeres que buscan orientación y contención en su proceso de adaptación.

Most of the members of this initiative come from Latin America, although there are also participants from South Africa. Through their work, they have made visible the difficulties faced by migrants in an irregular situation: from discrimination in access to employment and basic services, to labor exploitation. With effort and dedication, they have woven a support network for those women who seek guidance and support in their adaptation process.

Las historias de vida dentro de este grupo son un reflejo de lo difícil que es comenzar desde cero en otro país. En algunos casos, las mujeres llegan sin siquiera un techo donde dormir. Las voceras de la asociación, con quienes tuve la oportunidad de conversar, enfatizan la urgencia de encontrar soluciones para quienes llegan sin recursos. Por ello, trabajan en fortalecer la entidad a través de colaboraciones y convenios con instituciones como el Ayuntamiento de su localidad.

The life stories within this group are a reflection of how difficult it is to start from scratch in another country. In some cases, women arrive without even a roof over their heads. The association’s spokespersons, with whom I had the opportunity to talk, emphasize the urgency of finding solutions for those who arrive without resources. For this reason, they work to strengthen the entity through collaborations and agreements with institutions such as their local City Council.

Su objetivo a largo plazo es consolidarse como un espacio de referencia y apoyo para las mujeres migrantes que toquen sus puertas, con la meta de establecer una casa de acogida que sirva como albergue temporal para quienes lo necesiten.

Its long-term objective is to consolidate itself as a space of reference and support for migrant women who knock on its doors, with the goal of establishing a shelter that serves as temporary shelter for those who need it.

La cocina como herramienta de resistencia / Cooking as a tool of resistance

La historia de FLORAS EN ACCIÓN es un testimonio de cómo la autoorganizacion  puede transformar vidas. Su punto de partida fue un sistema de ahorro colectivo, pero pronto se dieron cuenta de que las necesidades eran muchas y urgía desarrollar nuevas estrategias. Al reconocer que la mayoría de las mujeres tenía habilidades culinarias, encontraron en la cocina un arma fundamental para afrontar su difícil camino.

The story of FLORAS IN ACTION is a testimony of how self-organization can transform lives. Their starting point was a collective savings system, but they soon realized that the needs were many and it was urgent to develop new strategies. Recognizing that most women had culinary skills, they found in the kitchen a fundamental weapon to face their difficult path.

La cocina se convirtió en un medio de resistencia y autosuficiencia: una plataforma para crecer, fortalecer su capacidad organizativa y potenciar el talento de cada una. Gracias a esta iniciativa, han logrado participar en eventos importantes, como el organizado por el consultado de Colombia en Bcn en arco del triunfo el año pasado.

The kitchen became a means of resistance and self-sufficiency: a platform to grow, strengthen one’s organizational capacity and enhance each person’s talent. Thanks to this initiative, they have managed to participate in important events, such as the one organized by the Colombian consultancy in Bcn in Arc de Triomphe last year.

Estructura de trabajo y áreas de acción / Work structure and areas of action

Para cumplir su misión, FLORAS EN ACCIÓN ha estructurado su trabajo en distintas áreas clave:

To fulfill its mission, FLORAS EN ACCION has structured its work in different key areas:

• Cocina: una vía para la autonomía económica y la integración cultural. Cooking: a way to economic autonomy and cultural integration.
• Artesanía: un medio para preservar sus raíces y generar ingresos. Crafts: a means to preserve your roots and generate income.
• Asesoría legal: apoyo en la regularización de documentos y orientación sobre sus derechos. Legal advice: support in the regularization of documents and guidance on your rights.
• Educación: cursos impartidos por profesionales para mejorar el perfil y las oportunidades laborales de las mujeres migrantes, en las áreas de cocina y repostería. Education: courses taught by professionals to improve the profile and job opportunities of migrant women, in the areas of cooking and baking.
• Acompañamiento emocional y espiritual: un espacio de contención para mujeres que llegan con heridas, preocupaciones y la esperanza de un futuro mejor. Empezar desde cero requiere fortaleza emocional, espiritual y física, y la asociación trabaja en brindar ese respaldo. Emotional and spiritual accompaniment: a space of containment for women who arrive with wounds, concerns and hope for a better future. Starting from scratch requires emotional, spiritual and physical strength, and the association works to provide that support.

Un modelo basado en la solidaridad y el trabajo colectivo

A model based on solidarity and collective work

Las experiencias compartidas por las integrantes de FLORAS EN ACCIÓN invitan a la reflexión: ¿hacia dónde va la humanidad? No solo en términos laborales, sino también sociales. Con un modelo basado en la solidaridad y el trabajo colectivo-vecinal, esta asociación no solo ofrece ayuda, sino que también empodera a sus integrantes.

The experiences shared by the members of FLORAS EN ACCION invite reflection: where is humanity going? Not only in work terms, but also socially. With a model based on solidarity and collective-neighborhood work, this association not only offers help, but also empowers its members.

El reto sigue siendo grande, pero la convicción es firme: tender la mano a quienes más lo necesitan y construir una comunidad más equitativa, justa e inclusiva en Mataró. Como ellas mismas dicen, en 2025 su principal labor será fortalecer la salud integral de las mujeres que tocan sus puertas, consolidando las líneas de trabajo que ya han construido.

The challenge remains great, but the conviction is firm: to reach out to those who need it most and build a more equitable, fair and inclusive community in Mataró. As they themselves say, in 2025 their main work will be to strengthen the comprehensive health of the women who knock on their doors, consolidating the lines of work that they have already built.

FLORAS EN ACCIÓN es, sin duda, un ejemplo de resistencia y sororidad en el camino de la migración.
