Paco Rubio: Versatile Career in Theater, Film and Radio

«Francisco Rubio Redondo, más conocido como Paco Rubio, nació en Cetina de Aragón (Zaragoza), España, el 8 de mayo de 1956. La casualidad quiso que su nacimiento tuviera lugar en el histórico Castillo de Quevedo, un lugar cargado de historia y vinculado a una de las figuras más destacadas del Barroco español. Este emblemático castillo, que había sido el hogar de su padre durante un tiempo, se había convertido en un puesto de la Guardia Civil justo antes de su llegada al mundo».

«Francisco Rubio Redondo, better known as Paco Rubio, was born in Cetina de Aragón (Zaragoza), Spain, on May 8, 1956. By chance, his birth took place in the historic Quevedo Castle, a place full of history and linked to one of the most prominent figures of the Spanish Baroque. This emblematic castle, which had been his father’s home for a time, had become a Civil Guard post just before his arrival into the world.

Sus primeros recuerdos están ligados a ese antiguo castillo, donde pasó los primeros años de su vida. Sin embargo, la familia se mudó pronto y Paco se trasladó con sus padres y hermanos a otros lugares. Tenía un hermano mayor, José María, al que llamaban cariñosamente Chema, y un hermano menor, Jesús Ángel. por el que siempre sintió una profunda conexión, con quien compartía juegos y aventuras. Creciendo así, en un ambiente familiar cálido y lleno de amor, rodeado de sus seres queridos. «Experiencias que marcarían profundamente su personalidad y lo acompañarían a lo largo de toda su vida.»

His first memories are linked to that old castle, where he spent the first years of his life. However, the family soon moved and Paco moved with his parents and siblings to other places. He had an older brother, José María, affectionately called Chema, and a younger brother, Jesús Ángel. for whom he always felt a deep connection, with whom he shared games and adventures. Growing up like this, in a warm family environment full of love, surrounded by his loved ones. «Experiences that would deeply mark his personality and accompany him throughout his life.»

A los 16 años, Paco Rubio tomó la decisión que cambiaría su vida para siempre: dejar su hogar para unirse al Colegio de Guardias Jóvenes de la Guardia Civil en Valdemoro, Madrid. Fue el primero de su familia en dar ese paso, consciente de que no habría vuelta atrás. Dos años después, con solo 18 años, salió de aquel colegio convertido en Guardia Civil, listo para iniciar su carrera en las Fuerzas de Seguridad del Estado. Su primer destino fue Alberique, Valencia, donde no solo enfrentó sus primeros desafíos como militar, sino que también encontró al amor de su vida, Carmen Estarlich Martorell.

At the age of 16, Paco Rubio made the decision that would change his life forever: leave his home to join the College of Young Guards of the Civil Guard in Valdemoro, Madrid. He was the first in his family to take that step, aware that there would be no turning back. Two years later, at only 18 years old, he left that school as a Civil Guard, ready to start his career in the State Security Forces. His first destination was Alberique, Valencia, where he not only faced his first challenges as a soldier, but also found the love of his life, Carmen Estarlich Martorell.

En 1977, Paco realizó el Curso de Circulación y Tráfico como motorista, lo que lo llevó a su siguiente destino en Motilla del Palancar, Cuenca. Ese mismo año, el 4 de septiembre, se casó con Carmen y el 12 de junio de 1978, nació su primer hijo, Víctor, en Alzira, Valencia.

In 1977, Paco took the Circulation and Traffic Course as a motorcyclist, which took him to his next destination in Motilla del Palancar, Cuenca. That same year, on September 4, he married Carmen and on June 12, 1978, his first son, Víctor, was born in Alzira, Valencia.

Carmen no es solo su esposa; es la columna vertebral de su familia. Desde el primer día, su fortaleza, valentía y determinación se convirtieron en el mayor apoyo de Paco. Sin ella, como el mismo lo manifiesta, nunca habría alcanzado las metas que se propuso. Carmen sacrificó mucho, cuidando de la familia mientras Paco se preparaba para enfrentar nuevos retos. Su apoyo incondicional, tanto en los buenos como en los malos momentos, ha sido el pilar sobre el cual se ha sostenido su vida en común, y por ello, Paco le estará eternamente agradecido una y mil veces más como el mismo lo dice:
«Le doy las gracias, una vez más, por haberme elegido como compañero para toda la vida, y quiero también dejar impreso en este papel, todo el amor que siento por ella»,

Carmen is not only his wife; He is the backbone of his family. From day one, his strength, bravery and determination became Paco’s greatest support. Without it, as he himself states, he would never have achieved the goals he set for himself. Carmen sacrificed a lot, taking care of the family while Paco prepared to face new challenges. His unconditional support, both in good and bad times, has been the pillar on which their life together has been sustained, and for this, Paco will be eternally grateful to him a thousand times more, as he himself says: «I thank her, once again, for having chosen me as a partner for life, and I also want to leave printed on this paper all the love I feel for her,»

En 1980, completó el Curso de Ascenso a Cabo en Madrid, tras lo cual fue destinado al Móvil de Logroño. Allí, en un cuartel donde se preparaban para combatir a la banda terrorista ETA, Paco enfrentó una realidad brutal: la muerte acechaba cada día. Jóvenes de entre 20 y 30 años caían a manos de asesinos despiadados, víctimas de disparos en la nuca o bombas lapa. Sobrevivir en esas condiciones era un logro en sí mismo.

In 1980, he completed the Corporal Promotion Course in Madrid, after which he was assigned to the Logroño Mobile. There, in a barracks where they were preparing to fight the terrorist group ETA, Paco faced a brutal reality: death lurked every day. Young people between 20 and 30 years old fell at the hands of ruthless killers, victims of shots in the back of the head or sticky bombs. Surviving in those conditions was an achievement in itself.

En mayo de 1980, en un intento desesperado por salir del País Vasco, Paco se inscribió en el Primer Curso de Motocicletas Todo Terreno para unirse al SEPRONA (Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza), curso extremadamente exigente, con accidentes y lesiones diarias, pero Paco lo superó. La moto y él siempre han sido un equipo imbatible. Aunque no logró su objetivo inmediato de dejar la región, regresó a Logroño con una nueva habilidad y el espíritu intacto, listo para seguir adelante.

In May 1980, in a desperate attempt to leave the Basque Country, Paco enrolled in the First All-Terrain Motorcycle Course to join the SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service), an extremely demanding course, with daily accidents and injuries, but Paco got over it. He and the motorcycle have always been an unbeatable team. Although he did not achieve his immediate goal of leaving the region, he returned to Logroño with a new skill and spirit intact, ready to move forward.

Durante su tiempo en el acuartelamiento de Logroño, el 24 de marzo de 1981, Paco Rubio y Carmen Estarlich dieron la bienvenida a su segundo hijo, Héctor Rubio Estarlich, nacido en un hospital de la capital riojana.

En junio de 1982, Paco solicita una plaza en la unidad de Tráfico en Tarragona, la cual le fue concedida con urgencia, obligándolo a trasladarse sin su familia ni pertenencias por más de 25 días en que por fin, pudo regresar por ellas. En Tarragona, fue destinado a la localidad de Mora de Ebro, donde asumió el cargo de jefe del destacamento de Tráfico, con 10 guardias civiles bajo su mando en el que permaneció hasta septiembre de 1985, cuando fue transferido al destacamento de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil en Requena, Valencia. Allí sirvió hasta mayo de 1986, antes de ser destinado al destacamento de Tráfico de Gandía, Valencia, lugar en el que decidió echar raíces, consciente de que quería ofrecer a sus hijos la estabilidad que él no había tenido, un lugar donde pudieran crecer rodeados de amigos de infancia y un sentido de pertenencia. Durante su tiempo en Gandía, siempre inquieto y con ansias de superación, realizó varios cursos de promoción y especialización. Se compró un piso, una pequeña casa de campo con una hanegada (800 mts2 aprox. ) de terreno de frutales, y una motocicleta BMW modelo K-1100 LT, que aún usa hoy en día.

In June 1982, Paco requested a place in the Traffic unit in Tarragona, which was granted to him urgently, forcing him to move without his family or belongings for more than 25 days when he was finally able to return for them. Todo transcurría con serenidad. Paco disfrutaba de una buena posición en el trabajo, Carmen también trabajaba, y sus hijos crecían. Víctor, el mayor, estudiaba en la universidad, donde completó dos carreras y un máster, mientras trabajaba como profesor en un colegio privado y entrenador de baloncesto en categorías profesionales y semi-profesionales. Además, impartía charlas sobre liderazgo, autoestima y familia en colegios y centros culturales, y ofrecía clinics para entrenadores que aspiraban a obtener el título de entrenador superior, que él mismo ya poseía y Héctor, el menor optó por no seguir estudios universitarios y se dedicó al trabajo, ganándose el título de técnico en instalación de alarmas de seguridad, con un buen salario y demostrando su habilidad para manejar todo tipo de tareas.

Everything was going on serenely. Paco enjoyed a good position at work, Carmen also worked, and their children were growing up. Víctor, the eldest, studied at the university, where he completed two degrees and a master’s degree, while working as a teacher at a private school and a basketball coach in professional and semi-professional categories. In addition, he gave talks on leadership, self-esteem and family in schools and cultural centers, and offered clinics for coaches who aspired to obtain the title of senior coach, which he himself already possessed and Héctor, the youngest, chose not to pursue university studies and dedicated himself to work, earning the title of security alarm installation technician, with a good salary and demonstrating his ability to handle all types of tasks.

Paco y Carmen siempre estuvieron ahí para sus hijos, apoyándolos en sus decisiones y permitiéndoles volar solos, pero haciéndoles saber que siempre podían contar con ellos. Héctor fue el primero en dejar el hogar, mudándose con su pareja, quien pronto se convirtió en una parte integral de la familia, considerándolos a ambos como sus verdaderos padres. En 2005, Héctor se casó, y en 2007, el 14 de abril, hicieron abuelos a Paco y Carmen con la llegada de su nieta, Claudia Rubio Pastor, una niña que desde pequeña mostró dotes artísticas.. Víctor, por su parte, contrajo matrimonio en 2006, y el 25 de agosto de 2007, trajo al mundo a su hijo, Daniel Rubio Castillo, otro motivo de alegría para Paco y Carmen. Daniel, un niño encantador desde su nacimiento, siempre fue superado por la fuerte personalidad de su prima, lo cual hacía sonreír a todos.

Paco and Carmen were always there for their children, supporting them in their decisions and allowing them to fly alone, but letting them know that they could always count on them. Héctor was the first to leave home, moving in with his partner, who soon became an integral part of the family, considering them both as his real parents. In 2005, Héctor got married, and in 2007, on April 14, Paco and Carmen became grandparents with the arrival of their granddaughter, Claudia Rubio Pastor, a girl who showed artistic gifts from a young age. Víctor, for his part, contracted marriage in 2006, and on August 25, 2007, she brought her son, Daniel Rubio Castillo, into the world, another reason for joy for Paco and Carmen. Daniel, a charming child from birth, was always surpassed by his cousin’s strong personality, which made everyone smile.

Sin embargo, el 15 de septiembre de 2008, la vida de Paco y Carmen cambió drásticamente. Mientras disfrutaban de un día en su casa de campo, Paco recibió una llamada que lo dejó helado: su hijo Héctor había sufrido un accidente de tráfico. A pesar de que sus compañeros intentaron suavizar la noticia, Paco, con la experiencia de haber dado ese mismo mensaje a otras familias a lo largo de su carrera, supo en su interior que su hijo había fallecido. Durante el trayecto al hospital, luchó por mantenerse fuerte, pero al llegar, sus peores temores se confirmaron. A pesar de los esfuerzos del equipo médico, Héctor no sobrevivió.

However, on September 15, 2008, Paco and Carmen’s lives changed drastically. While they were enjoying a day at their country house, Paco received a call that left him frozen: his son Héctor had suffered a traffic accident. Although his colleagues tried to soften the news, Paco, with the experience of having given the same message to other families throughout his career, knew deep down that his son had died. During the ride to the hospital, she fought to stay strong, but upon arrival, her worst fears were confirmed. Despite the efforts of the medical team, Hector did not survive.

Este episodio dejó una cicatriz profunda en Paco y Carmen. Aunque los años han pasado, los recuerdos de aquel día siguen vivos, reviviendo el dolor y la incredulidad de haber perdido a su amado hijo.

This episode left a deep scar on Paco and Carmen. Although the years have passed, the memories of that day remain vivid, reliving the pain and disbelief of having lost their beloved son.

Cuando su hijo Víctor llegó al hospital, Paco lo abrazó fuertemente, dejando caer un poco de la carga que llevaba a cuestas aunque, su hijo mayor estaba allí, el peso de la situación recaía sobre Paco como padre, como protector. No podía evitar preguntarse cómo había fallado. ¿Cómo había permitido que algo así ocurriera? Al caminar por el pasillo del hospital, abrazado por su hijo Victor para identificar el cuerpo de su hijo pequeño, se desplomó en el suelo. La realidad lo golpeó con brutalidad: ¿Cómo era posible que le pidieran identificar el cadáver de su hijo? ¡Su hijo pequeño no podía estar muerto!

When his son Víctor arrived at the hospital, Paco hugged him tightly, dropping a little of the burden he was carrying, although his eldest son was there, the weight of the situation fell on Paco as a father, as a protector. He couldn’t help but wonder how he had failed. How had he allowed something like this to happen? As he walked down the hospital hallway, hugged by his son Victor to identify his little son’s body, he collapsed on the floor. Reality hit him brutally: How was it possible that they asked him to identify his son’s body? His little son couldn’t be dead!

Paco se derrumbó por completo. El dolor tan intenso y profundo que sintió, sólo quienes han pasado por algo similar pueden entenderlo. Él lo llamó «el dolor del alma». Sintió que su alma se partía en dos, y que una de esas mitades se había ido con Héctor. Con la voz quebrada, le dijo a Víctor: «Hijo, papá no puede hacerlo. Tendrás que ir tú. Lo siento, lo siento mucho, pero no puedo verlo así, Víctor. No puedo verlo así, hijo.»

Paco completely collapsed. The intense and deep pain he felt, only those who have gone through something similar can understand. He called it «the pain of the soul.» He felt like his soul was split in two, and that one of those halves had gone with Hector. With a broken voice, he said to Victor: «Son, dad can’t do it. You’ll have to go. I’m sorry, I’m very sorry, but I can’t see him like that, Victor. I can’t see him like that, son.»

Mientras revivía esos recuerdos, Paco sentía cómo el dolor volvía a inundarlo, como si estuviera de nuevo en la oficina del terapeuta, llorando como un niño y tratando de sacar de su interior aquello que lo destrozaba.

As he relived those memories, Paco felt the pain flooding back into him, as if he were back in the therapist’s office, crying like a child and trying to get rid of what was destroying him.

En cuestión de segundos, sus vidas cambiaron para siempre. Paco había perdido una de las torres de su castillo, pero Héctor le dejó un legado: su hija de 18 meses, Claudia, quien quedó bajo el cuidado de su abuelo. Así, Paco se convirtió en padre y abuelo a la vez, creando un vínculo tan fuerte con Claudia que, cuando uno de ellos enferma, el otro está a su lado en cuestión de segundos.

In a matter of seconds, their lives changed forever. Paco had lost one of the towers of his castle, but Héctor left him a legacy: his 18-month-old daughter, Claudia, who was left in the care of her grandfather. Thus, Paco became a father and grandfather at the same time, creating such a strong bond with Claudia that, when one of them falls ill, the other is by his side in a matter of seconds.

A partir de ese momento, la vida tomó otro rumbo. Aunque Paco nunca olvidaría a su hijo, sabía que Héctor seguiría vivo mientras hablaran de él. Pero era tiempo de cambiar de tema y centrarse en el presente. Desde la tragedia, Claudia y su madre permanecieron en la ciudad, cerca de Paco y Carmen, sus abuelos y padres, compartiendo muchos momentos juntos.

From that moment on, life took another direction. Although Paco would never forget his son, he knew that Héctor would still be alive as long as they talked about him. But it was time to change the subject and focus on the present. Since the tragedy, Claudia and her mother remained in the city, close to Paco and Carmen, her grandparents and parents, sharing many moments together.

Daniel, su otro nieto, había encontrado su pasión en el deporte, siguiendo los pasos de su padre en el baloncesto. Se estaba convirtiendo en un jugador excepcional, un verdadero «jugón», como lo llamaban cariñosamente. Con su 1,85 metros de altura, heredados de su abuelo Paco, Daniel se destacaba como tirador de triples, siendo imparable para sus rivales. Actualmente, juega en el equipo junior de Gandía, ocupando la posición de escolta o alero, algo que llena de orgullo tanto a Paco como a Daniel.

Daniel, his other grandson, had found his passion in sports, following in his father’s footsteps in basketball. He was becoming an exceptional player, a true «player», as he was affectionately called. At 1.85 meters tall, inherited from his grandfather Paco, Daniel stood out as a three-point shooter, being unstoppable for his rivals. Currently, he plays on the Gandía junior team, occupying the position of shooting guard or small forward, something that fills both Paco and Daniel with pride.

El 1 de julio de 2019, Paco alcanzó un nuevo logro en su carrera: fue ascendido a Cabo Mayor, un título especial que, además de requerir la superación de un curso, implicaba una evaluación por una Junta de Generales. Fue así como se convirtió en el primer y único Cabo Mayor del Sector de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil en Valencia. Durante este tiempo, viajaba diariamente en tren desde Gandía hasta Valencia, hasta el 8 de mayo de 2021, cuando pasó a la situación de retirado.

On July 1, 2019, Paco achieved a new achievement in his career: he was promoted to Senior Corporal, a special title that, in addition to requiring completion of a course, involved an evaluation by a Board of Generals. This is how he became the first and only Senior Corporal of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard in Valencia. During this time, he traveled daily by train from Gandía to Valencia, until May 8, 2021, when he became retired.

El 18 de noviembre de 2020, Víctor publicó su primer libro, titulado «Siempre Preparado». Paco recomendaba su lectura con entusiasmo, señalando que, aunque Víctor afirmaba en la contraportada que no pretendía hacer un libro de liderazgo, ni una guía vital, ni un libro de autoayuda, «Siempre Preparado» lograba ser todo eso y más. Paco estaba convencido de que cualquier lector se vería reflejado en alguna parte del libro, ya fuera en una frase, un capítulo, o incluso en una sola palabra.

On November 18, 2020, Víctor published his first book, titled «Always Prepared.» Paco enthusiastically recommended reading it, pointing out that, although Víctor stated on the back cover that he did not intend to make a leadership book, nor a life guide, nor a self-help book, «Always Prepared» managed to be all that and more. Paco was convinced that any reader would see themselves reflected in some part of the book, whether in a sentence, a chapter, or even a single word.

Después de haber dedicado su vida al servicio y al cuidado de su familia, Paco Rubio encontró en el teatro, en la actuación, una nueva manera de canalizar su energía, creatividad y resiliencia. Fue en agosto de 2013 cuando comenzó su andadura en la Compañía de Teatro Clásico «El Carro de Verona» en Gandía. Esta nueva faceta no solo le ofreció una forma de expresión artística, sino también una vía para continuar construyendo y fortaleciendo los lazos familiares, al compartir el escenario con su nieta Claudia Rubio, quien heredó el amor por el teatro y la actuación.

After having dedicated his life to serving and caring for his family, Paco Rubio found in theater, in acting, a new way to channel his energy, creativity and resilience. It was in August 2013 when he began his career in the Classical Theater Company «El Carro de Verona» in Gandía. This new facet not only offered him a form of artistic expression, but also a way to continue building and strengthening family ties, by sharing the stage with his granddaughter Claudia Rubio, who inherited his love for theater and acting.
