SPEARHEAD: COLONEL CIFUENTES

Hace algunas semanas conocí al Coronel del Ejército, el señor, Luis Eduardo Cifuentes Villamartín, comandante de la brigada en Barranquilla, Colombia y a manera de charla informal, no programada, le hice una entrevista camuflada en una simple y social conversación.

A few weeks ago I met the Colonel of the Army, Mr. Luis Eduardo Cifuentes Villamartín, commander of the brigade in Barranquilla, Colombia and as an informal, unscheduled chat, I interviewed him camouflaged as a simple and social conversation.

Me llamo la atención, su sencillez, la manera académica, y la solida mística como me explicaba la Fe en la Causa, que es la que mueve el espíritu de todos los uniformados para servirle a la patria.

I was struck by his simplicity, the academic manner, and the solid mystique as Faith in the Cause explained to me, which is what moves the spirit of all those in uniform to serve the country.

Me decía: “Muchas personas asocian el uniforme, con las armas únicamente, o, equivocadamente, con la guerra, y están equivocados. El arma es una parte integral del todo, pero el espíritu que mueve al soldado, es servir a la patria, defender su soberanía. A las comunidades, ayudarlas a crecer en relación a ciertas actividades sociales, y cruzadas de alertas, que van desde las colaboraciones locativas comunitarias, hasta las jornadas de salud y prevención de enfermedades y desastres fortuitos, construcción de puentes militares».

He told me: “Many people associate the uniform, with weapons only, or, mistakenly, with war, and they are wrong. The weapon is an integral part of the whole, but the spirit that moves the soldier is to serve the country, defend its sovereignty. To the communities, help them grow in relation to certain social activities, and alert crusades, ranging from local community collaborations, to health days and prevention of diseases and fortuitous disasters, construction of military bridges «.

«El soldado expone su vida, para salvar otras. Hemos hecho las veces de parteros, muchas veces, para ayudar a una mujer a que tenga su bebito, sin problemas, al enemigo lo asistimos medicamente, y lo tratamos como humanos, no como enemigos. Al anciano imposibilitado por el curso del tiempo, le damos un trato como si fueran nuestros padres, o un familiar. Esa es la educación del soldado, jamás la de atropellar a nadie, pese a que, dentro del concepto legal, nos asiste la legitima defensa, y no estamos impedidos de dar nuestras opiniones para reorientar a las comunidades, ante un desastre natural, siempre somos cautos, para evitar tergiversaciones malévolas. Muy pocas veces hacemos uso de ellas de las armas, por eso, nos mal interpretan como pasivos, hasta nos dicen cobardes».

«The soldier exposes his life, to save others. We have acted as midwives, many times, to help a woman to have her baby, without problems, we assist the enemy medically, and we treat him as human, not as enemies. To the elderly disabled by the course of time, we treat them as if they were our parents, or a relative. That is the education of the soldier, never running over anyone, despite the fact that, within the legal concept, we are assisted by legitimate defense, and we are not prevented from giving our opinions to reorient the communities, in the face of a natural disaster, we are always cautious, to avoid malicious misrepresentations. Very rarely do we use weapons with them, therefore, they misunderstand us as passive, they even call us cowards.»

Así mismo, afirmaba el coronel que: «los soldados, representan una parte de la esencia de los pueblos, que se brindan para servirle a la patria, además, son hijos también del pueblo, y mientras que otros hacen la tarea de poner a producir sanamente la tierra, sus economías, el soldado les ayuda a proteger lo que hacen, desde luego en la medida que las comunidades lo permitan, y se vuelvan aliados del bien común y no de la delincuencia, como suele ocurrir algunas veces, de manera inexplicable. El ciudadano poco entiende el sacrificio, gustoso, que hacemos para servirle a las comunidades de la nación. En ocasiones nos miran como enemigos, y están equivocados, el ejército de Colombia, es amigo, pacifista, somos mediadores, de ahí la razón, para que muchas veces aparezcamos como arrodillados ante la intolerancia, de algunos sectores que nos tratan de atropellar y nos atropellan, gravemente con las vías de hecho, machetazos, planazos, piedras, insultos, nos escupen, pudiendo defendernos con las armas que portamos, pero soportamos y no lo hacemos».

The citizen little understands the sacrifice, gladly, that we make to serve the communities of the nation. Sometimes they look at us as enemies, and they are wrong, the Colombian army is a friend, a pacifist, we are mediators, hence the reason, so many times we appear kneeling before intolerance, from some sectors that try to run us over and They run over, seriously with the roads in fact, machetes, flat blows, stones, insults, they spit on us, being able to defend ourselves with the weapons we carry, but we endure and we don’t.

«A veces preferimos sortear las situaciones mediante la persuasión antes que la acción. Ojalá algún día, las comunidades que entran en rebeldía, sepan, que todo abuso tiene su límite, y así como del lado agresor, los mueve un impulso ofensivo, puede darse el caso, que, de este lado, surja una reacción defensiva. El instinto natural de todo ser viviente, es defenderse, el soldado, por auto control, que le hemos enseñado, tiene controlado ese instinto, de lo contrario, una reacción en ráfagas, seria lamentable. Nunca pensamos llegar allá. Pero cada ser humano, es dueño de su control. Antes, dicho control, lo hemos convertido en colectivo para evitar tragedias. Al militar se le juzga con otra lupa, que no es igual, para los que nos ofenden. Las jerarquías en nuestra institución se respetan, no por miedo, si no, por disciplina, lealtad, compromiso, por amor a la patria. Mis superiores, son muy humanos, creyentes, hombres de Dios y de fe, por eso nos entendemos y la mística es maravillosa. Mi General, Zapateiro, comandante nacional, nos ha trazado un interesante modelo, que ha calado muy bien. Propiciar la armonía entre las fuerzas armadas y la policía. Nos ha enseñado para todos un respetuoso trato por igual: propiciar la amistad, humildad, sencillez, disciplina, respeto con carácter, lealtad, confianza, apoyo, compromiso, temor a Dios, para que podamos ser sabios, en la toma de nuestras decisiones. Por ello trabajamos con bríos, y somos amigos del pueblo. Todos nuestros soldados en las carreteras, saludan a todos los que transitan. Así es en todos los lugares».

«Sometimes we prefer to circumvent situations through persuasion rather than action. Hopefully one day, the communities that go into rebellion know that all abuse has its limit, and just as on the aggressor side, an offensive impulse moves them, it can happen case, that, on this side, a defensive reaction arises. The natural instinct of every living being is to defend itself, the soldier, by self-control, which we have taught him, has controlled that instinct, otherwise, a reaction in bursts would be unfortunate. We never thought we would get there. But each human being owns his control. Before, this control, we have turned it into a collective to avoid tragedies. The military is judged with another magnifying glass, which is not the same, for those who offend us. The hierarchies in our institution are respected, not out of fear, but out of discipline, loyalty, commitment, out of love for the country. My superiors are very human, believers, men of God and of faith, that’s why we understand each other and mysticism is wonderful. My General, Zapateiro, national commander, has outlined an interesting model for us, which has gone down very well. Promote harmony between the armed forces and the police. He has taught us all respectful treatment equally: promote friendship, humility, simplicity, discipline, respect with character, loyalty, trust, support, commitment, fear of God, so that we can be wise in making our decisions. That is why we work with enthusiasm, and we are friends of the people. All our soldiers on the roads salute all who pass by. That’s the way it is everywhere.»

-Coronel Cifuentes, gracias por el rato y créame que la interdependencia social, es fundamental para la buena convivencia social. Todos nos necesitamos. Van muy bien la gente los admira, al igual que sus colegas policiales, que hacen su buena tarea.
