“THE UNIVERSITY AND THE PRODUCTIVE SECTOR”

…El curioso paso de la máquina de escribir, al computador, fue para mí, un privilegio de haber vivido en el tiempo de los sucesos.

The curious transition from the typewriter to the computer was, for me, a privilege of having lived through the era of those events.

Hoy llego a mis manos procedente de Bogotá Colombia, un artículo que publique en la revista de la Universidad de Cartagena hace más de 37 años. Se trataba de un medio informativo que recogía los aconteceres de la academia y que estaba dirigido por la dignísima y querida escritora SARA BOZZI ANDERSON, con la asistencia de la excelente mecanógrafa Doña Rebeca Lecompte.

Today, an article I published in the University of Cartagena’s magazine more than 37 years ago has come into my hands, originating from Bogotá, Colombia. It was an informative medium that captured the happenings of academia and was directed by the most dignified and beloved writer Sara Bozzi Anderson, with the assistance of the excellent typist Doña Rebeca Lecompte.

La emoción fue muy grande, por ello sentí la necesidad de escribir sobre el tema, porque hoy después de tantos años, pude contemplar la feliz paradoja de buena parte de mi segunda Juventud como adulto, y ahora, con la sabiduría que me otorga el paso indeclinable de la vejez, en la que me da el privilegio de ser testigo de los cambios que vi en la historia y avances que hemos vivido durante ese tiempo a la fecha.

The emotion was immense, which is why I felt the need to write about the topic, because today, after so many years, I could contemplate the happy paradox of a good part of my second youth as an adult, and now, with the wisdom granted to me by the inexorable passage into old age, which gives me the privilege of being a witness to the changes I saw in history and the advances we have experienced from that time to the present.

Pero, remitiéndome a lo territorial y coloquial, la idea de asociar la Universidad al sector empresarial, siempre fue una obsesión para mí, para abrirle a los estudiantes universitarios, los espacios laborales para que desarrollen lo aprendido y desarrollen la visión futurista del empresario. Esto le permitiría al estudiante, impregnarse de la filosofía económico empresarial, para que se vaya creando el sentido de la autosuficiencia, como emprendedor, y no como eterno empleado.

But, referring to the territorial and colloquial aspects, the idea of associating the University with the business sector was always an obsession for me, to open up job opportunities for university students so they could apply what they learned and develop a futuristic vision as entrepreneurs. This would allow the student to immerse themselves in the economic-business philosophy, fostering a sense of self-sufficiency as an entrepreneur, rather than as a perpetual employee.

En el campo eminentemente de las carreras intermedias como técnicos, ya El SENA, había hecho algo similar por ley, con el acercamiento del alumno al sector empresarial desde el año de 1957 bajo la dirección general de su fundador, Dr Augusto Martínez Tono. Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje SENA, entidad de la cual también fui su rector desde 1983 a 1987, en simultanea de dos capitales importantes Cartagena Bolívar y Sincelejo Departamento de Sucre. In the field of intermediate careers such as technical programs, the SENA had already done something similar by law, bringing students closer to the business sector since 1957 under the general direction of its founder, Dr. Augusto Martínez Tono. The National Learning Service SENA, an entity of which I was also rector from 1983 to 1987, simultaneously in two important capitals: Cartagena de Indias, Bolívar, and Sincelejo, Department of Sucre. We transitioned from the typewriter to the computer.

No obstante, lo que pretendí hacer en la universidad posteriormente, quedo como una semilla, de la que no podría asegurar, si hoy ese mismo modelo se implementó en las profesiones tradicionales, que obligan a un mayor número de año para titularles como tales.

Nevertheless, what I later attempted to do at the university remained as a seed, of which I could not assure whether that same model has been implemented today in traditional professions, which require a greater number of years to grant degrees.

Por ello considere y considero que las universidades deben promover esos acercamientos con la empresa privada, porque crea visión empresarial e independencia laboral.

For that reason, I considered and still consider that universities should promote these connections with the private sector, because it creates entrepreneurial vision and job independence.

Para el año de 1992, presente un proyecto al rector de la Universidad de Cartagena Dr. Carlos Villalba Bustillo, fallecido, que tenía el propósito de hacer que la Universidad de Cartagena, creara su propia fuente de autosuficiencia económica, o por lo menos, que aportara unos ingresos que provinieran de cada facultad en sus respectivas disciplinas y especialidades, que ayudaran en lo también al desarrollo tecnológico de las mismas, y se rompiera el paradigma que la empresa y sus empresarios, son unos explotadores del trabajador. Mi deseo era fomentar, crear la confianza laboral con el empresario. No sé, si hoy existe ese programa que inicie, o lo desecharon.

In 1992, I presented a project to the rector of the University of Cartagena, Dr. Carlos Villalba Bustillo, now deceased, which aimed to have the University of Cartagena create its own source of economic self-sufficiency, or at least contribute some income derived from each faculty in their respective disciplines and specialties, which would also aid in their technological development and break the paradigm that businesses and their entrepreneurs are exploiters of workers. My desire was to foster and build labor trust with the entrepreneur. I do not know if that program I initiated exists today, or if it was discarded.

El proyecto le gusto al Rector, y de ahí surge el nombre de: Dirección de prestación de servicios y consultoría, que tuve el honor de estructurar, impulsar y dirigir, hasta el día de mi retiro por edad.

The rector liked the project, and from there emerged the name: Directorate of Service Provision and Consulting, which I had the honor of structuring, promoting, and directing until the day of my retirement due to age.

Siempre he considerado que la alianza entre el estado con el sector empresarial, es la mejor forma de hacer patria y desarrollo productivo; porque crea capital y empleo y enseña a que el ahorro es la base de los capitales y el crecimiento personal para la organización.

I have always considered that the alliance between the state and the business sector is the best way to build the nation and productive development; because it creates capital and employment, and teaches that saving is the foundation of capital and personal growth for the organization.

Con el paso de los largos días, y hoy a mis 82 años, he tenido el honor de abrirle las puertas de una empresa a un alumno, para que aporte lo que se le enseño en las aulas. Pero mucho más he sentido ese placer, cuando al cabo de poco tiempo, ese alumno ya dirige su propia empresa, lo que me indica, que algo quedo de la semilla que sembré.

With the passage of long days, and today at my 82 years, I have had the honor of opening the doors of a company to a student, so that they can contribute what was taught in the classrooms. But much more, I have felt that pleasure when, after a short time, that student is already running their own company, which tells me that something remained from the seed I planted.

Reflexión: Para que un país pueda progresar debe manejarse con los criterios de una empresa privada, y para que el sector laboral, progrese, debe despertar su vocación de servicio teniendo en cuenta la patria, de la mano de sus intereses, pero fomentando la armonía, no la disociación.

Reflection: For a country to progress, it must be managed with the criteria of a private enterprise, and for the labor sector to advance, it must awaken its vocation of service, taking into account the homeland, hand in hand with its interests, but fostering harmony, not dissociation.
