BAY OF THE SUN IN CARTAGENA.

El desarrollo turístico de la ciudad de Cartagena es innegable, y la tendencia está a la vista. Hace muchísimos años lo pronostico mi padre en una de sus columnas: (INSTANTANEAS) en el Diario El Universal. Y… luego como miembro de la sociedad de mejoras públicas de la ciudad, al calor de un café puro de Colombia, comentaba ante los distinguidos amigos miembros de la entidad encargada de velar por los valores históricos de nuestro terruño, les decía con vehemencia, hacia donde debía apuntar el desarrollo de la Ciudad de Cartagena que era con destino a Barranquilla.

The tourist development of the city of Cartagena is undeniable, and the trend is clear to see. My father predicted this many years ago in one of his columns (SNAPSHOTS) in the newspaper El Universal. And then, as a member of the city’s public improvement society, over a cup of pure Colombian coffee, I commented to distinguished friends who are members of the organization charged with safeguarding the historical values of our homeland. I vehemently told them that the development of the city of Cartagena should be headed toward Barranquilla.

Con agrado recuerdo a Don Ramiro Lemaitre, que fue presidente de dicha sociedad de mejoras públicas, fallecido, al ex Presidente Carlos Lleras Restrepo, que quiso y admiro muchísimo a Cartagena y le dejo la gran avenida Santander que bordea la playa. El Expresidente con la construcción de esa avenida, parecía señalarnos ese destino.

I fondly remember Don Ramiro Lemaitre, the late president of the aforementioned public improvement society, and former President Carlos Lleras Restrepo, who loved and admired Cartagena greatly and left it the grand Santander Avenue that runs along the beach. With the construction of this avenue, the former president seemed to be pointing us toward that destiny.

Esta el arquitecto Dr. Humberto Rodríguez Puente, sobreviviente, gran amigo y hombre visionario, aun en plena dinámica al servicio de Cartagena, hoy inmerso en su proyecto de convertir el monumento de la virgen situado en la mitad de la bahía, en una zona de acercamiento turístico, con servicios de restaurante, a la altura de los más atractivos de otros países.

There is architect Dr. Humberto Rodríguez Puente, a survivor, great friend, and visionary, still fully engaged in the service of Cartagena, today immersed in his project to convert the monument of the Virgin located in the middle of the bay into a tourist attraction, with restaurant services, on par with the most attractive in other countries.

Esto para citar algunos de los amigos de la ciudad, porque los que amamos a Cartagena, somos muchos, y, los que la desean pervertir haciendo un turismo inapropiado, vulgar, dañino, son pocos, entre estos; hay personajes locales y ciertos extranjeros que abusan de su arrogancia por la disponibilidad económica, quizá de dudosa procedencia, y por eso creen poder comprar el mundo, o hacer del entorno parte de sus quereres.

These are just a few of the city’s friends, because there are many of us who love Cartagena, and few who wish to pervert it through inappropriate, vulgar, and harmful tourism. Among them are local figures and certain foreigners who abuse their arrogance due to their economic availability, perhaps of dubious origin, and so believe they can buy the world or make the surrounding area part of their desires.

Por fortuna estos visitantes en número son mínimos, pero hacen mucho daño, porque traen costumbres malsanas asociadas con vicios, y negocios de mal origen, entre estos la explotación de jóvenes que las pervierten con invitaciones tan malas, como dañan los juegos de suerte y azar en que se pierde todo por la avaricia, asociados a los calanchines que se aprovechan de esa debilidad para terminarlos de quebrar, prestándoles dineros para que sigan jugando. Esos son los exponentes de la corrupta usura disfrazada de un risueño servicio que la ciudad debe rechazar. Esa infamia, por desgracia, es el lunar de las ciudades turísticas.

Fortunately, these visitors are few in number, but they cause a lot of harm, because they bring unhealthy habits associated with vices and shady businesses, including the exploitation of young people who pervert them with such unsavory invitations, as well as the damage caused by games of chance in which everything is lost due to greed, associated with crooks who take advantage of this weakness to completely bankrupt them, lending them money to continue gambling. These are the exponents of corrupt usury disguised as a pleasant service that the city must reject. This infamy, unfortunately, is the blemish of tourist cities.

Cartagena and Barranquilla should join forces across 130 kilometers of beaches to form the largest and most attractive tourist destination in Colombia and one of the most striking in Latin America.

La visión de mi padre, y quizás de muchos, no estaba tan lejos de ser una realidad, y lo digo porque de Barranquilla hacia Cartagena y viceversa, ya comienzan los inversionistas a sembrar el desarrollo en esa larga franja de playa, que desde luego genera fuentes de trabajo, y mejora las condiciones de los pueblos que tradicionalmente han vivido en los intermedios de esa trayectoria , a los que hay que darles la mano, para que puedan convertirse en polos promotores de turismo, para que resalten sus costumbres culturales, pero bien orientadas.

My father’s vision, and perhaps that of many others, wasn’t so far from reality. I say this because, from Barranquilla to Cartagena and vice versa, investors are already beginning to sow development along that long stretch of beach, which will certainly generate jobs and improve the conditions of the towns that have traditionally lived in the middle of that path. They need a helping hand so they can become tourism hubs, so they can highlight their cultural customs, but with a well-targeted approach.

Desde el hotel las Américas, localizado en una margen de la Boquilla se inicia esa proyección maravillosa y espectacular de urbanismo. Está Barcelona, que es todo un bello complejo residencial maravilloso. Está Sirena del Mar, con un espectacular hospital de última generación, rodeado de residencias, y edificios, lagos y medios de distracción que parecen de fantasía.

From the Hotel Las Américas, located on a bank of the Boquilla, this marvelous and spectacular urban planning project begins. There’s Barcelona, a beautiful residential complex. There’s Sirena del Mar, with a spectacular state-of-the-art hospital, surrounded by residences, buildings, lakes, and recreational facilities that seem like fantasy.

A quince minutos, camino a Barranquilla, pero aun en Cartagena, esta la Urbanización BAHIA DEL SOL, localizada junto al caserío: Arroyo de las Canoas, que es una comunidad de pescadores, de gente buena, a la que hay preparar para que se beneficien del turismo y puedan mostrar la esencia de sus costumbres, con preparación y buena presentación.

Fifteen minutes away, on the way to Barranquilla, but still in Cartagena, is the BAHIA DEL SOL Urbanization, located next to the hamlet: Arroyo de las Canoas, which is a fishing community, of good people, who must be prepared to benefit from tourism and be able to show the essence of their customs, with preparation and good presentation.

BAHIA DEL SOL, pensando en aportarle al desarrollo de Cartagena, insistió en sacar avante su proyecto que viene en curso desde años, pero ahora combinado con la vivienda de libre gusto, buscando una visual agradable típica, versátil, y “descomplicada”, pero buscando dentro de la informalidad, la formalidad con sus reglamentos comunitarios que son los que facilitan la sana convivencia, y una mejor armonía colectiva.

BAHIA DEL SOL, aiming to contribute to the development of Cartagena, insisted on moving forward with its project, which has been in progress for years, but now combined with housing of free taste, seeking a pleasant, typical, versatile, and «uncomplicated» appearance, but seeking within informality, formality with its community regulations that are those that facilitate healthy coexistence, and greater collective harmony.

Ya algunos de los que han construido, han levantado cabañas, como CASA ADELA, para vivir o arrendar, que resultan de gran atractivo, y, lo más importante, es que la sociedad gestora del proyecto, mantiene unos precios cómodos, que, para la zona, son muy asequibles, sobre todo en un área que, a la vuelta de pocos años, la inversión se verá ampliamente compensada por la valorización.

Some of those who have built have already built cabins, like CASA ADELA, for living or renting, which are very attractive. Most importantly, the project management company maintains affordable prices, which, for the area, are very accessible, especially in an area where, in a few years, the investment will be more than offset by appreciation.

Sería bueno que el alcalde de Cartagena Dr. Dumek Turbay, gestor del cambio de la ciudad, con mas aciertos que fallas, piense en llevarles el agua potable a esa zona, como también la regularización de otros servicios, para que los asuman las empresas directamente y no por delegación, porque a veces por facilitar, se llega a mal interpretar.

It would be good if the mayor of Cartagena, Dr. Dumek Turbay, who has led the city’s change, with more successes than failures, considered bringing drinking water to the area, as well as regularizing other services, so that these companies assume them directly and not through delegation, because sometimes, in order to simplify matters, they lead to misinterpretation.

El país solo puede cambiar su cara, si pensamos en que todos tenemos espacios para que la libertad esté representada en el trabajo, y el goce sano y leal, sea el premio de reputarnos como dueños de una propiedad que logramos conseguir a base de esfuerzo.

The country can only change its face if we believe that we all have spaces where freedom is represented in our work, and that healthy and loyal enjoyment is the reward for considering ourselves owners of a property we have earned through hard work.
