Dome of San Pedro Claver, 200 years of history in Cartagena de Indias

En este 2025 la Cúpula de la Iglesia de San Pedro Claver de Cartagena de Indias, cumple 200 años de construida por el Ingeniero Arquitecto Frances Gastón Lelarge, quien se inspiró en la cúpula de Miguel Ángel, de San Pedro en Roma.

In 2025, the dome of the Church of San Pedro Claver in Cartagena de Indias celebrates 200 years since it was built by the architect Frances Gastón Lelarge, who was inspired by Michelangelo’s dome of St. Peter’s in Rome.

La ubicación de este monumento es todo un privilegio teniendo en cuenta que se encuentra en la Plaza San Pedro Claver, entre la Santa Teresa y la Aduana. El santuario está conformado por la Iglesia que lleva el mismo nombre y es donde reposan los restos de San Pedro Claver, el defensor de los Derechos Humanos, y el museo dedicado a honrar su memoria y que funciona en un antiguo claustro colonial perteneciente a la orden de los jesuitas.

The location of this monument is a privilege, considering its location in Plaza San Pedro Claver, between Santa Teresa and the Customs House. The sanctuary consists of the church of the same name, where the remains of Saint Pedro Claver, the human rights defender, rest, and the museum dedicated to honoring his memory, which operates in a former colonial cloister belonging to the Jesuit order.

Precedente histórico / Historical precedent

La historia de la cúpula se remonta a inicios del siglo XVII, cuando llegaron los primeros sacerdotes jesuitas a la relativamente recién fundada ciudad. Este conjunto arquitectónico fue creciendo y consolidándose al mismo tiempo que la ciudad, siendo testigo de los hechos históricos que han formado la identidad de este territorio.

The history of the dome dates back to the early 17th century, when the first Jesuit priests arrived in the relatively newly founded city. This architectural complex grew and consolidated alongside the city, bearing witness to the historical events that have shaped the identity of this area.

El diseño del mirador tiene una cúpula de media naranja apoyada en un tambor, siendo un elemento más bien sencillo, que cumplía la función de filtrar la luz y el viento a través de las ventanas del tambor para que pasaran al interior de la iglesia. 

The design of the belvedere features a half-orange dome resting on a drum, a rather simple element whose function was to filter light and wind through the drum’s windows into the church.

Este diseño del siglo XVIII fue reemplazado en la segunda década del siglo XX, respondiendo a las actualidades estilísticas de esa época.

This 18th-century design was replaced in the second decade of the 20th century, reflecting the stylistic trends of the time.

Esto, le otorgó a la Iglesia una mezcla muy marcada de estilos que facilita evidenciar la evolución arquitectónica del bien inmueble.

This gave the Church a very marked mix of styles that makes it easy to see the architectural evolution of the property.

Exposición Colectiva / Collective Exhibition

A través de una convocatoria pública, se invitaron a pintores de Cartagena y Nacionales enviar propuestas creativas sobre la Cúpula de San Pedro Claver tesoro arquitectónico en el Centro Histórico de Cartagena de Indias. Programa de exposiciones temporales del Santuario Museo San Pedro Claver recibió a 20 expositores locales y nacionales que presentan sus proyectos artísticos con diferentes técnicas y formatos que muestran en sus obras su mirada a la cúpula de este Santuario y su relación con la ciudad, en el Salón Pacho Aldana del Museo.

Through a public call, painters from Cartagena and the nation were invited to submit creative proposals about the Dome of San Pedro Claver, an architectural treasure in the Historic Center of Cartagena de Indias. The San Pedro Claver Sanctuary Museum’s temporary exhibition program welcomed 20 local and national exhibitors who presented their artistic projects using different techniques and formats. Their work showcases their perspective on the dome of this Sanctuary and its relationship with the city. This exhibition, held in the Pacho Aldana Hall of the Museum

Destacamos las obras presentadas por los artistas Vanessa Periñan, Eder Trespalacios, Esperanza Gonzales, Mauricio Mayorga, Lorenzo Albarrán, Jeannette Siccard, Juan Carlos Suarez, Juan Sebastián Cassiani, Juan Sebastián Julio, Nathalie Melchiari, Tere Perdomo Escobar esta ultima pintora en su obra se destaca una mirada al interior de la cúpula y a sus vitrales.

Showcases the works presented by artists Vanessa Periñan, Eder Trespalacios, Esperanza Gonzales, Mauricio Mayorga, Lorenzo Albarrán, Jeannette Siccard, Juan Carlos Suarez, Juan Sebastián Cassiani, Juan Sebastián Julio, Nathalie Melchiari, and Tere Perdomo Escobar. The latter painter’s work features a look at the interior of the dome and its stained-glass windows.

Con un excelente concierto de canciones interpretadas por Simón Olano, muchas dedicadas a la querida ciudad de Cartagena, se clausuro esta jornada inaugural, que permanece abierta en el museo.

This inaugural event, which remains open at the museum, concluded with an excellent concert of songs performed by Simón Olano, many of them dedicated to the beloved city of Cartagena.
