CB: ¿Cómo recuerdas tus primeros pasos en la música, siendo aún un niño en el barrio de Parreta? How do you remember your first steps in music, as a child in the Parreta neighborhood?

De mi infancia recuerdo mi llamada a la música desde el periodo escolar en mi propia casa donde siempre escuchaba y veia programas musicales atentamente que en aquellos tiempos acontecían. Escuchaba temas en la radio y los interpretaba al mismo tiempo allí en el barrio donde me crié La Perreta (Valencia)

From my childhood, I remember being drawn to music from school at home, where I would always listen to and watch music programs that were on at the time. I would listen to songs on the radio and perform them at the same time, in the neighborhood where I grew up, La Perreta (Valencia).

CB: ¿Quiénes fueron tus primeros referentes musicales cuando empezaste a cantar en los coros escolares? Who were your first musical role models when you started singing in school choirs?

Como cantautores, es decir siguiendo mi ideología y las canciones que más prestaba mi atención fueron las que en su dia eran conocidas como canciones «comprometidas» de los grandes interpretes como Serrat, Lluis Llach, Patxi Andion, Victor Manuel, Victor Jara etc……

As singer-songwriters, that is to say, following my ideology and the songs that I paid most attention to were those that were known in their day as «committed» songs by great performers such as Serrat, Lluis Llach, Patxi Andion, Victor Manuel, Victor Jara, etc.

FORMACIÓN Y VOCACIÓN / TRAINING AND VOCATION

CB: ¿Qué te motivó a continuar con la música durante tus años de estudio? What motivated you to continue with music during your years of study?

El motivo de mi continuidad en la música fue el tener amigos vinculados al teatro y a la música donde interpretamos temas un tanto comprometidos en aquellos tiempos realizándolos en escuelas tanto públicas como privadas, obteniendo gran éxito.

The reason I continued in music was having friends involved in theater and music, where we performed songs that were somewhat difficult at the time, performing them in both public and private schools, achieving great success.

CB: ¿Cómo influyó tu paso por obras musicales como Jesucristo Superstar en tu identidad artística? How did your involvement in musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar influence your artistic identity?

El musical de Jesucristo Superestar motivo mucho ya que en aquella época también era algo «novedoso» y todo lo interpretaba con mi compañero «Toño y su guitarra», interpretaciones de varios fragmentos de tan maravillosa obra y varios personajes lo que me motivo pues vi que podía ser un artista polifacético con muchos tonos y tesituras diferentes.

The musical Jesus Christ Superstar motivated me a lot since at that time it was also something «new» and I performed everything with my partner «Toño and his guitar», interpretations of various fragments of such a wonderful work and various characters, which motivated me because I saw that I could be a versatile artist with many different tones and ranges.

CB: ¿Qué te llevó a presentarte en la Escuela Superior de Música del Micalet y cómo marcó ese momento tu carrera? What led you to study at the Micalet School of Music, and how did that moment shape your career?

El motivo que me llevó a presentarme y examinarme en dicha escuela era porque estaba totalmente prohibido trabajar como profesional sin estar acreditado, por lo que podrían sancionar al local en el que me presentase así que me titulé exitosamente tras una prueba final con un gran jurado para proseguir con mi vocación.

The reason I decided to apply and take the exam at that school was because it was strictly forbidden to work as a professional without being accredited, which could lead to sanctions against the establishment where I applied, so I successfully graduated after a final exam with a grand jury to pursue my vocation.

TRAYECTORIA COMO CANTAUTOR / CAREER AS A SINGER-SONGWRITER

CB: ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia actuando como cantautor en pubs y salas por toda la Comunidad Valenciana y parte del país? What was your experience like performing as a singer-songwriter in pubs and clubs throughout the Valencian Community and parts of the country?

Mis inicios fueron en aquellos tiempos en el que recorrí muchos Pubs y salas de audición. Aprendí de todos ellos y la forma de conectar con el público. De hecho, fui ganador como cantautor mi guitarra y yo en un Festival de aquel entonces llamado Festival de la Canción del Turia (Bugarra) con el tema de Lluis Llach (El Bandoler) y otro de Patxi Andion (El Maestro). Hoy en dia dicho festival ya no se realiza.

My beginnings were back in those days, when I toured many pubs and listening rooms. I learned from all of them and how to connect with the audience. In fact, I won a prize as a singer-songwriter at a festival then called the Turia Song Festival (Bugarra) with a song by Lluis Llach (El Bandoler) and another by Patxi Andion (El Maestro). That festival no longer takes place today.

CB. ¿Qué aprendiste de los grandes referentes como Serrat, Víctor Manuel o Lluís Llach durante la Transición Española? What did you learn from great figures like Serrat, Víctor Manuel, and Lluís Llach during the Spanish Transition?

Mi aprendizaje fue determinante, de ellos aprendí lo que es interpretación, expresión y cultura musical. Y es que aquella música y mi personalidad estaban muy compenetradas. Tanto la música como las letras me llegaban al corazón y descubrí grandes cosas a traves de sus mensajes. Lo aprendí todo expresión y cultura musical.

My apprenticeship was crucial; from them, I learned about interpretation, expression, and musical culture. That music and my personality were deeply intertwined. Both the music and the lyrics touched my heart, and I discovered great things through their messages. I learned everything about musical expression and culture.

CB. ¿En qué momento sentiste que la música se había convertido ya en una forma de vida para ti? At what point did you feel that music had become a way of life for you?

Cuando participo en la VOZ SENIOR, el estar ahí se convirtió en mi referente para saber que iba por el buen camino. Ahí comprendí que lucharía para que la música siga siendo parte de mi vida.

When I participated in the SENIOR VOICE competition, being there became my benchmark for knowing I was on the right path. That’s when I realized I would fight to keep music a part of my life.

COLABORACIONES Y ESCENARIOS COMPARTIDOS / COLLABORATIONS AND SHARED SCENARIOS

CB: ¿Qué significó para ti compartir escenario con figuras como Amaya de Mocedades, Betty Missiego o Joan Bautista Humet? What did it mean to you to share the stage with figures like Amaya de Mocedades, Betty Missiego, and Joan Bautista Humet?

Significó mucho porque, estar cantando como telonero, con orquesta y con artistas de tremenda envergadura, y más que yo he sido autodidacta en esto pues lo que hice fue observar mucho y aprender mucho de ellos que era quines eran. Convirtiéndose en mi vida en oportunidades maravillosa para mi crecimiento artístico. Y el solo estar ahí ya era un premio.

It meant a lot to be singing as an opening act, with an orchestra and with artists of tremendous stature, and even more so since I’ve been self-taught in this, what I did was observe a lot and learn a lot from them, who they were. My life became a wonderful opportunity for my artistic growth. And just being there was a reward in itself.

CB: ¿Algún encuentro o anécdota que guardes con especial cariño de esas experiencias? / Any encounters or anecdotes that you hold dear from those experiences?

Una anécdota más casual que recuerdo fue con Moncho Borrajo con quien estuve en un local de Valencia, una vez que me escuchó me dijo: ¿Qué haces tu cantando canciones de los demás, con esa voz tan bonita y tan potente que tienes? Canta lo tuyo… – Ay maestro – le respondí- Para eso necesito compositores.. Y otra anécdota fue que cuando estaba actuando artistas muy conocidos como Joan Bautista Humet, y me toco salir a mi al escenario hubo un silencio total, es decir mucha atención y me dijo el dueño del local: «Esto no había sucedido antes, hubo un gran silencio total contigo más que con otras figuras…

A more casual anecdote that I remember was with Moncho Borrajo with whom I was in a club in Valencia, once he heard me he said to me: What are you doing singing other people’s songs, with that beautiful and powerful voice of yours? Sing your own thing… – Oh maestro – I answered – For that I need composers… And another anecdote was that when very well-known artists like Joan Bautista Humet were performing, and it was my turn to go on stage there was total silence, I mean a lot of attention and the owner of the club said to me: «This has never happened before, there was a great total silence with you more than with other figures…

VERSATILIDAD Y EVOLUCIÓN ARTÍSTICA / VERSATILITY AND ARTISTIC EVOLUTION

CB: ¿Cómo fue tu incursión en orquestas del norte de España y en agrupaciones de música latinoamericana? How did you get involved with orchestras in northern Spain and Latin American music groups?

Mi incursión sobre todo en orquestas del Norte de España fue muy importante ya que éramos contratados desde Valencia para realizar toda la temporada allí y me sirvió mucho para endurecerme ya que las actuaciones eran muy extensas y solo iba yo como cantante en un principio. Aprendí mucho, claro que si, en lo que va de interpretación y variedad de estilos.

My foray into orchestras in northern Spain, especially, was very important, as we were hired from Valencia to perform the entire season there. It really helped me toughen up, as the performances were very long and I was the only singer at first. I learned a lot, of course, in terms of interpretation and variety of styles.

CB: ¿Qué aprendizajes te dejó trabajar con tríos, cuartetos y repertorios de folclore argentino, chileno o paraguayo? What lessons did you learn from working with trios, quartets, and repertoires of Argentine, Chilean, and Paraguayan folklore?

Tuve el honor de conocer y colaborar con formaciones latinoamericanas donde descubrí, la maravillosa música que aportaban a este país. Desconocida aún en aquella época. Muchos vinieron a España por temas políticos y golpes de estado en sus respectivos países. Igualmente todo ello me enriqueció enormemente, descubriendo temas maravillosos de los cuales no se habían escuchado aquí por lo que me puse en marcha para aprender más..

I had the honor of meeting and collaborating with Latin American groups, where I discovered the wonderful music they contributed to this country. It was still unknown at the time. Many came to Spain due to political issues and coups d’état in their respective countries. All of this also enriched me enormously, as I discovered wonderful works that hadn’t been heard here, so I set out to learn more.

CB: ¿Te consideras un artista que ha sabido adaptarse sin perder su esencia?. Do you consider yourself an artist who has been able to adapt without losing his essence?

Si, me considero un artista que ha sabido adaptarse a cualquier situación sin perder mi esencia, algo que llevo adonde vaya.

Yes, I consider myself an artist who has known how to adapt to any situation without losing my essence, something I take with me wherever I go.

MEDIOS Y RECONOCIMIENTOS / MEDIA AND RECOGNITION

CB: ¿Qué recuerdas de tus participaciones televisivas en TV7 y À Punt TV? What do you remember about your television appearances on TV7 and À Punt TV?

En TV7 fui como artista invitado por una gran artista como es Maria Abradelo y en A PUN TV como retados con la canción «Delailah». Fueron momentos maravillosos en una época sobre todo en la de A PUNT TV ya que el Covid aún estaba rondando.

On TV7, I was a guest artist with a great artist like Maria Abradelo, and on A PUN TV, I was challenged with the song «Delailah.» They were wonderful moments, especially during the time at A PUNT TV, when Covid was still rife.

CB: Fuiste parte del homenaje oficial a Nino Bravo. ¿Qué implicó para ti interpretar a un símbolo tan grande de la música española? You were part of the official tribute to Nino Bravo. What did it mean to you to play such a symbol of Spanish music?

El ser elegido para interpretar el Memorandum Oficial de Nino Bravo, fue algo «inmenso» y al mismo tiempo de mucho riesgo por lo que supone tan gran cantante al cual siempre le he tenido un gran respeto. Fue definitivamente una de las actividades más importantes de mi vida ya que fui elegido por la propia familia de él.

Being chosen to perform Nino Bravo’s Official Memorandum was a huge undertaking, and at the same time, a huge risk, given the significance of such a great singer, for whom I have always had great respect. It was definitely one of the most important events of my life, since I was chosen by his own family.

CB: En La Maredeueta interpretas nuevamente a Nino Bravo, pero también a Juan Camacho. ¿Qué representa eso en este punto de tu carrera? In La Maredeueta, you play Nino Bravo again, but also Juan Camacho. What does that represent at this point in your career?

En dicho musical en «La Maredeueta» interpreto nuevamente y con mucho orgullo al gran Nino Bravo y Juan Camacho, esto representa la confianza que pone el Productor hacia mi persona como profesional y esto hace que siga mi objetivo.

LA VOZ SENIOR / THE SENIOR VOICE

CB: ¿Cómo viviste tu selección entre 36.000 candidatos para La Voz Senior? How did you experience your selection from among 36,000 candidates for The Voice Senior?

Mi participación en la primera edición de LA VOZ SENIOR fue para mi como un sueño que jamás pensé que podrían elegirme tras observar el nivel tan alto de los demás participantes. Todo ello lo viví con mucha tensión y nerviosismo pero aprendí a controlar esa «presión» para ir más relajado y seguro. Aquello imponía muchísimo.

My participation in the first edition of LA VOZ SENIOR was like a dream come true for me. I never thought I’d be chosen after seeing the high level of the other contestants. I experienced it all with a lot of tension and nerves, but I learned to manage that «pressure» to be more relaxed and confident. It was incredibly challenging.

CB: ¿Qué sentiste cuando David Bisbal te eligió para su equipo? How did you feel when David Bisbal chose you for his team?

El hecho de llegar al asalto a la final con el gran David Bisbal, fue algo muy difícil de describir y más cuando el comentaba que mi potencial estaba para ser un Nino Bravo o un Camilo Sexto, lo cual me emocionaba y me daba un subidón ya que viniendo de los grandes, esto me daba mucha fiabilidad para poder alcanzar alguna buena meta.

Reaching the final against the great David Bisbal was very difficult to describe, especially when he mentioned that I had the potential to be a Nino Bravo or a Camilo Sexto. This excited me and gave me a boost, since coming from the greats gave me a lot of confidence to be able to achieve a good goal.

CB: ¿Qué te dejó emocional y profesionalmente esa experiencia televisiva? What did that television experience leave you with emotionally and professionally?

Una emoción muy grande ya que la televisión es impresionante, tanto el plató como los concursantes que eran profesionalmente muy conocidos en el panorama musical. Una experiencia televisiva inolvidable. Los coristas de Bony , Gonzalo , José Maria Guzman etc…. Gente de musicales famosos.

It was a huge thrill, as the television was impressive, both the set and the contestants, who were professionally well-known in the music world. It was an unforgettable television experience. The backing vocalists included Bony, Gonzalo, José Maria Guzmán, etc., all from famous musicals.

LA VOZ INTERIOR / THE INNER VOICE

CB: ¿Has sentido a lo largo de tu carrera que muchas veces no te permitieron ser tú mismo como cantante? Have you felt throughout your career that you were often not allowed to be yourself as a singer?

Si, lo he sentido a lo largo de mi carrera muchas veces ya que me tenía que someter a un repertorio a veces muy comercial tanto en orquestas como de solista.

Yes, I’ve felt that way many times throughout my career, as I’ve had to submit to a sometimes very commercial repertoire, both in orchestras and as a soloist.

CB: ¿Cómo defines esa lucha silenciosa entre cantar como te pedían y cantar como tú sentías? How do you define that silent struggle between singing as you were asked and singing as you felt?

Mi lucha silenciosa lo definia entre el poder trabajar y ganarme un sueldo.

My silent struggle was defined between being able to work and earning a salary.

CB: Si hoy pudieras cantar desde tu esencia más pura, sin etiquetas ni imitaciones, ¿cómo sonaría Ray Luis? If you could sing from your purest essence today, without labels or imitations, what would Ray Luis sound like?

Sería ser Ray Luis libre, con una muy buena trayectoria, con una muy buena programación y con un Productor de nivel, que evidentemente sonaría muchísimo mejor. Ya que en mi mente y mi corazón siempre estaba el poder realizar un proyecto musical el cual defino como Voces del Mundo. Y no pierdo la esperanza de poderlo realizar.

It would mean being Ray Luis free, with a very good track record, with excellent programming, and with a top-level producer, which would obviously sound much better. The goal of creating a musical project, which I define as Voices of the World, was always in my mind and heart. And I haven’t lost hope of being able to make it happen.

CB: ¿Cuál ha sido el precio de mantenerte fiel a tu sensibilidad y estilo, aun cuando eso no encajara en ciertos moldes? What has been the price of staying true to your sensibility and style, even when it doesn’t fit certain molds?

CB: ¿Qué representa hoy la música en tu vida? What does music represent in your life today?

Todo. Es lo que más sentido tiene en mi vida.

Everything. It’s what makes the most sense in my life.

CB: ¿Qué proyectos tienes actualmente que sientes que sí te permiten mostrarte tal como eres? What projects do you have currently that you feel allow you to show yourself as you are?

Actualmente, Estoy en un musical La Maredeueta donde represento a las mejores voces.Nino Bravo y Juan Camacho. Y si, me muestro tal como soy en dicha representación. Así mismo soy productor general de mi propio programa de radio en Hola Mundo online radio

I’m currently in the musical La Maredeueta, where I represent the best voices of Nino Bravo and Juan Camacho. And yes, I show myself as myself in that performance. I’m also the general producer of my own radio show on Hola Mundo online radio.

CB: ¿Qué le dirías a quienes aún no te han escuchado o te han encasillado como una simple “voz bonita”? What would you say to those who haven’t heard you yet or have pigeonholed you as just a «pretty voice»?

A los que no me han escuchado aún les diria que si tienen la ocasión que me vean en directo o a través de las redes sociales donde hay muchos videos que se os gustarán y a los que me encasillan como una simple voz bonita decirles que soy mucho mas que eso, soy interpretación a la vez tenor.

Si pudiese regalar una canción al mundo seria MI HEROE. Es una canción de superación y de mucho corazón del gran Antonio Orozco.

If I could give the world a song, it would be «My Hero.» It’s a song of overcoming challenges and a heartfelt message from the great Antonio Orozco.

CB: ¿Qué sueñas con lograr aún como artista, después de tanto recorrido y entrega? What do you still dream of achieving as an artist, after so much experience and dedication?

El cantar para mi es vincular todo lo hermoso que pueda llegar al corazón del público y si con ello lo sigo logrando me doy por satisfecho. Soy un cantante que le gusta expresarse e interpretar y comunicar como ser humano, emociones y sentidos.

For me, singing is about connecting everything beautiful that I can to reach the audience’s hearts, and if I continue to achieve that, I’m satisfied. I’m a singer who loves to express myself, perform, and communicate emotions and feelings as a human being.
