Pilar Tobon Escobar, founder of the World Textile Art – WTA organization, symbol of the MIFA museum house, honored at the XI WTA INTERNATIONAL ART BIENNIAL – The Four Elements

La WORLD TEXTILE ART – WTA, fue fundada en 1997 cuando la artista textil colombiana Pilar Tobón estableció su residencia en Miami, desarrollando desde aquel entonces una sólida actividad en el campo de la creatividad, promoción y gestión del arte textil con obras que exploran fibras y metales naturales, influenciadas por la rica herencia estética y simbólica ancestral de las culturas indígenas prehispánicas, especialmente la orfebrería y sus técnicas de producción.

WORLD TEXTILE ART – WTA was founded in 1997 when Colombian textile artist Pilar Tobón established her residence in Miami, developing since then a solid activity in the field of creativity, promotion and management of textile art with works that explore natural fibers and metals, influenced by the rich aesthetic and symbolic ancestral heritage of pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures, especially goldsmithing and its production techniques.

Pilar Tobón, la artifice de esta maravilla, ha expuesto en España, Japón, Estados Unidos, Colombia, Ecuador y México; y en exposiciones colectivas en Estados Unidos, Italia, España, Brasil, Bélgica, Uruguay, México, Austria y Argentina; representó a Colombia en la XI Trienal de Tapices de Lodz (2004) y en la X Bienal Internacional de Arte Textil “De Lausana a Pekín” (China, 2018). Ha sido curadora, moderadora y jurado en foros internacionales.

Pilar Tobón, the creator of this marvel, has exhibited in Spain, Japan, the United States, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico; and in group exhibitions in the United States, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Belgium, Uruguay, Mexico, Austria, and Argentina. She represented Colombia at the 11th Lodz Tapestry Triennial (2004) and the 10th International Biennial of Textile Art «From Lausanne to Beijing» (China, 2018). She has served as a curator, moderator, and jury member at international forums.

Pilar, en el año 2000, con todo el know how adquirido así como ese gran expertise que la caracteriza, hoy a nivel mundial lanza por primera vez, la primera bienal del WTA: “Renacimiento Precolombino”. La segunda bienal del WTA tuvo lugar en el Centro Cultural Ara Gallery de Coral Gables, Miami. Las siguientes bienales del WTA comenzaron una trayectoria por diferentes países, donde en cada sede un nuevo comité de organizadores aceptó el reto. El cambio de nombre a Arte Textil Mundial se debe a su crecimiento y relevancia como el único gran evento internacional nacido en América. Venezuela, Costa Rica, Argentina, México, Uruguay, España y Chile han acogido una bienal del WTA, otorgándole a cada una un carácter único. Para celebrar sus 25 años, la Bienal del WTA, en su décima edición, regresa a Miami, su ciudad de origen y es así que la XI Bienal de la WTA se celebró en Miami, con un carácter único, centrada en los Cuatro Elementos, reuniendo obras textiles contemporáneas de diferentes formatos e interactuando con artistas y público. Como siempre contando con el respaldo de los indistintos y maravillosos artistas quienes la han enriquecido con las donaciones de sus obras, de elevado valor artístico.

In 2000, Pilar, with all the know-how she has acquired and the vast expertise that characterizes her, today launched the first WTA Biennial: «Pre-Columbian Renaissance» on a global level. The second WTA Biennial took place at the Ara Gallery Cultural Center in Coral Gables, Miami. Subsequent WTA Biennials began a journey through different countries, where a new organizing committee accepted the challenge at each venue. The name change to World Textile Art is due to its growth and relevance as the only major international event born in the Americas. Venezuela, Costa Rica, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Spain, and Chile have all hosted a WTA Biennial, giving each one a unique character. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the WTA Biennial, in its tenth edition, returns to Miami, its city of origin. Thus, the XI WTA Biennial was held in Miami, with a unique character, focused on the Four Elements, bringing together contemporary textile works of different formats and interacting with artists and the public. As always, it has the support of the diverse and wonderful artists who have enriched it with donations of their works of high artistic value.

This XI WTA Biennial Event is a grand tribute to Pilar Tobón who on this occasion presented her TEXTILE ART RETROSPECTIVE organized by the Curators of the 11th Biennial, Yosi Anaya and María Ortega, and their jurors Biret Tavman, Ewa Latkowska-Żychska, Ieva Krumina, Kinor Jiang, Paulina Ortiz, Susan Taber Avila:

• Yosi Anaya investigadora-docente en el Instituto de Artes de la Universidad Veracruzana en México, dedicada a la intersección de las tradiciones textiles y las artes visuales. Experta como comisaria múltiples exposiciones y cuenta con varios artículos publicados sobre percepciones y prácticas culturales en torno a las diferentes voces en el ámbito textil. Organizadora de eventos internacionales, ponente y conferencista. Jurado en diversos paneles y concursos artísticos, así como que cuenta con una gran diversidad de premios y distinciones. Presidiendo la VI Bienal Mundial de Arte Textil – Aire, celebrada en tres ciudades de México, con 35 exposiciones, talleres y recorridos culturales. Fue . Fue codirectora de la XI Bienal de la WTA – Los Cuatro Elementos. Consejera de la WTA desde sus inicios.
• Maria Ortega, artista, comisaria y gestora cultural dueña de una trayectoria artística y profesional vinculada al arte textil contemporáneo y al arte de la fibra, dedicándose a promover y dar a conocer este movimiento. María quien hace unos años fuera entrevistada por la CEO de La Agencia Mundial de Prensa, tiene una trayectoria rica en organizaciones de alto nivel y comisariado con más de 25 exposiciones nacionales e internacionales, así como encuentros culturales paralelos. Directora y comisaria de la X Bienal WTA – 25 años en España, actualmente codirectora de la XI Bienal WTA – Los Cuatro Elementos.

• Maria Ortega, artist, curator, and cultural manager with an artistic and professional career linked to contemporary textile and fiber art, dedicated to promoting and raising awareness of this movement. Interviewed a few years ago by the CEO of the World Press Agency, María has a rich career in high-level organizations and curatorships, with more than 25 national and international exhibitions, as well as parallel cultural events. Director and curator of the 10th WTA Biennial – 25 years in Spain, currently co-director of the 11th WTA Biennial – The Four Elements.

Esta Bienal conto así mismo con la presencia del consul de Colombia en Miami Oscar Fernando Marmolejo Roldari, quien hizo entrega del reconocimiento a Pilar Tobón por sus treinta años de labor en el arte textil y por ser fundadora de la WTA WORLD TEXTILE ART ORGANIZATION.

This Biennial was also attended by the Colombian Consul in Miami, Oscar Fernando Marmolejo Roldari, who presented recognition to Pilar Tobón for her thirty years of work in textile art and for being the founder of the WTA WORLD TEXTILE ART ORGANIZATION.

Por tal motivo, Pilar, como artista de honor inauguró el 4 de marzo en la casa museo MIFA, el WORLD TEXTILE ART con su RETROSPECTIVA «EL PASADO CON EL PRESENTE», junto con la exposición de LOS CUATRO ELEMENTOS, obras de artistas de diferentes países convocados por la Gestora para este Grandioso evento.

For this reason, Pilar, as an honored artist, inaugurated WORLD TEXTILE ART on March 4th at the MIFA museum, with her RETROSPECTIVE «THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT», along with the exhibition of THE FOUR ELEMENTS, works by artists from different countries invited by the Management Committee for this Grand event.

Para esta ocasión las cuatro galerías de LA CASA MUSEO MIFA, vistieron de gala los XI salones BIENALES de la WTA para la RETROSPECTIVA de la artista Pilar Tobón, y las obras de LOS CUATRO ELEMENTOS, «Aire, Tierra, Fuego y Agua» realizadas por artistas de MEXICO, URUGUAY, CHILE, U.S.A., COLOMB IA, ARGENTINA, entre otros.

For this occasion, the four galleries of LA CASA MUSEO MIFA, dressed up the XI BIENNIAL halls of the WTA for the RETROSPECTIVE of the artist Pilar Tobón, and the works of THE FOUR ELEMENTS, «Air, Earth, Fire and Water» made by artists from MEXICO, URUGUAY, CHILE, U.S.A., COLOMBIA, ARGENTINA, among others.

Verdaderamente cuando se observa con detenimiento las obras de Pilar Tobón, se concluye que en ellas hay una búsqueda de crecimiento artístico en las que la artista ha realizado con entrega laboriosa y gran maestría, su condensación de conocimiento nutridos en el dominio de técnicas muy especiales, en las que Pilar expresa un gran movimiento artístico, definido en la creación de formas y figuras con dibujos alucinantes, estampados de vivos colores, que con sus manos inquietas crea elevado trabajo artístico, producto de su ingenio y creatividad en sus esculturas de diferentes formatos en las que están impresas fragmentos de metales, piedras, encajes, orfebrería y borlas antiguas.

Truly when one observes Pilar Tobón’s works carefully, one concludes that they contain a search for artistic growth in which the artist has carried out with laborious dedication and great mastery, her condensation of knowledge nourished in the mastery of very special techniques, in which Pilar expresses a great artistic movement, defined in the creation of shapes and figures with hallucinatory drawings, brightly colored prints, which with her restless hands creates elevated artistic work, a product of her ingenuity and creativity in her sculptures of different formats in which fragments of metals, stones, lace, goldsmithing and antique tassels are printed.

En esta nueva edición, la prestigiosa XI Bienal Internacional de Arte Textil Contemporáneo 2025 se centra en el hilo conductor de nuestra existencia: los Cuatro Elementos, que nos activan, nos penetran, nos moldean, nos dan vida y sustento se inauguró de forma espectacular.

In this new edition, the prestigious XI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art 2025 focuses on the common thread of our existence: the Four Elements, which activate us, penetrate us, shape us, give us life and sustenance.

En la cuatro galerias del MIFAse ubicaron XI salones bienales de la WTA, cada una dedicada a la exposición de LOS CUATRO ELEMENTOS, entre formas y figuras los artistas participantes se compenetraron a plasmar con fibras naturales inmersas en su creatividad, la elaboración de exóticas mezclas de colores preparados con los naranjas y sepias, para obtener el rojo del FUEGO, los azules siena para conseguir el azul del AGUA, los verdes esmeralda mezclados con cafe para concebir el auténtico color TIERRA y el blanco grisáceo para crear el AIRE a través de las manos inquietas del artista. Todas estas obras muy intensas e intrigantes. La diversidad es preponderante en donde más de 100 artistas diferentes interpretan su elemento a través de la fibra. En la ceremonia de inauguración, se anunciaron los reconocimientos a la excelencia por formato: tres primeros, tres segundos y tres terceros lugares, además de 9 menciones honoríficas. In the four galleries of MIFA, the XI WTA biennial salons were located, each dedicated to the exhibition of THE FOUR ELEMENTS, between shapes and figures, the participating artists interacted to capture with natural fibers immersed in their creativity, the elaboration of exotic mixtures of colors prepared with oranges and sepias, to obtain the red of FIRE, sienna blues to obtain the blue of WATER, emerald greens mixed with brown to conceive the authentic color EARTH and grayish white to create AIR through the restless hands of the artist. All of these works are intense and intriguing. Diversity prevails, with more than 100 different artists interpreting their elements through fiber. Este evento fue sin lugar a dudas como la misma Organización lo dijo, «Una invitación para reflexionar sobre los 4 elementos y a disfrutar de la creatividad plasmada en obras de artes textil o de fibra volcada en torno a dichos elementos».

This event was, without a doubt, as the organization itself stated, an invitation to reflect on the four elements and to enjoy the creativity captured in works of textile or fiber art centered around these elements.
