HERNANDO ARTUZ FATHER AND SON. MUSICAL HERITAGE OF THE CARIBBEAN FOR COLOMBIA.

Antes de entrar en la interesante vida musical de los NANDOS, quiero reconocer mi gratitud a doña Gema Hannaber, por abrirme las puertas de la Cantata. A ella la conocí hace muchos años, cuando desempeñaba la gerencia de la Chevrolet en Villa Country de la ciudad de Barranquilla, año 2009.

Before entering into the interesting musical life of the NANDOS, I want to acknowledge my gratitude to Mrs. Gema Hannaber, for opening the doors of the Cantata to me. I met her many years ago, when I was managing Chevrolet in Villa Country in the city of Barranquilla, in 2009.

Nunca me imaginé, que tiempo después, apareciera nuevamente en la escena, tan distinguida dama, ahora como el eje fundamental que organiza los encuentros para quienes les gusta la música y el canto. Por supuesto, que aquel desconocido comprador, además forastero, como era mi caso, jamás mi casual visita a la distribuidora de autos, pudo quedar en su retina, por la cantidad de clientes que visitan esas salas de ventas. Pero, eso no me ocurrió a mí, porque fue tan buena su atención, que me impresiono, para regresar de comprador.

I never imagined that some time later, such a distinguished lady would appear on the scene again, now as the fundamental axis that organizes meetings for those who like music and singing. Of course, that unknown buyer, also a stranger, as was my case, my casual visit to the car dealership could never remain in his retina, due to the number of clients who visit those sales rooms. But, that didn’t happen to me, because their service was so good that it impressed me to return as a buyer.

Solo el tiempo nos cambió de lugares, porque Gema, siempre será la gran presentadora para ofertar lo que nos pueda hacer felices: Ayer fueron los autos, hoy es la música.

Only time changed our places, because Gema will always be the great presenter to offer what can make us happy: Yesterday it was cars, today it is music.

Cuando se me invito a formar parte de la CANTATA de la que, al principio, tuve mis dudas, pensé, que sus participantes eran todos liricos, con voces de soprano, barítono y tenores, en sus diversas tonalidades- Lo pensé y analicé, porque me sentía, como con canto de gallo basto en corral de finos.

When I was invited to be part of the CANTATA of which, at first, I had my doubts, I thought that its participants were all lyrical, with soprano, baritone and tenor voices, in their various tonalities. I thought about it and analyzed it, because I felt like a coarse rooster crowing in a fine corral.

Descartado ese alto nivel de lo clásico, que, dicho sea de paso, me encanta, entre a formar parte de la Cantata, y… gracias Gema, y por ella, conozco a nuestros invitados de hoy: Don Hernando Artuz hijo, porque a su padre lo conocía.

Having discarded that high level of classical music, which, by the way, I love, I became part of the Cantata, and… thank you Gema, and because of her, I know our guests today: Don Hernando Artuz Jr., because at his father knew him.

Artuz padre, fallecido, fue un maravilloso músico, que le siguió los pasos su padre, sin alcanzar su dimensión, no por falta de la materia prima, yo diría que por carencia de constancia y orden.

Artuz Sr., deceased, was a wonderful musician, who followed in his father’s footsteps, without reaching his dimension, not because of a lack of raw material, I would say because of a lack of consistency and order.

Don Hernando Artuz padre, lo conocí en mi ciudad natal, Cartagena de indias, en el club social, que lleva el mismo nombre, precisamente para las festividades del 11 de noviembre, fecha de nuestra independencia. “Tropibomba” era el nombre de la orquesta, y la “A número uno”, de las cuales fue su director. Durante varios años, nos alegró en las diversas temporadas que convocaba el Club para sus fiestas bailables, como las Novembrinas y decembrinas.

Don Hernando Artuz Sr., I met him in my hometown, Cartagena de Indias, at the social club, which bears the same name, precisely for the festivities of November 11, the date of our independence. “Tropibomba” was the name of the orchestra, and “A number one”, of which he was its director. For several years, we were happy during the various seasons that the Club held for its dance parties, such as Novembrinas and Decembrinas.

Terminados sus estudios dentales, renuncio a estos, y prefirió ver más y mejor, las sonrisas sonoras, que las incomodas por el ruido de las fresas.

Once he finished his dental studies, he renounced them, and preferred to see more and better, sonorous smiles, rather than those made uncomfortable by the noise of the burs.

La música provoca satisfacciones muy grandes, como leer un buen libro, o hablar con alguien que despierte simpatías y cero toxicidades.

¿Qué bello escuchar al piano o la guitarra, un bolero? O… a toda una orquesta en pleno, para regalarnos un porro adobado con el swing popular de nuestra gente y música caribe que contagio las nostalgias andinas, para darles alegría. Ese fue el propósito de don Hernando el grande al contribuir con sus melodías contagiando de alegrías, como también lo hicieron otros ilustres maestros de la música popular, como Lucho Bermudez, Pacho Galán, Toño y su Combo. La orquesta de Perez Prado, y la Sonora Matancera. La Villos Caracas. Fue una época de oro musical de Cartagena. Ahí entre esos grandes estuvo Artuz.

How beautiful to hear a bolero on the piano or guitar? Or… to a full orchestra, to give us a joint marinated with the popular swing of our people and Caribbean music that infects Andean nostalgia, to give them joy. That was the purpose of Don Hernando the Great when he contributed with his melodies, spreading joy, as did other illustrious masters of popular music, such as Lucho Bermudez, Pacho Galán, Toño y su Combo. El maravilloso Barranquillero nos regaló momentos inolvidables. Por eso la Capital lo absorbió y lo hizo trasladar a, Bogotá y debido a su forma artística de interpretación, como también de arreglista y pianista, es llamado por una organización musical de CURACAO y lo contratan como director y pianista de BOY DAP, que, entre otras cosas, era un destacado cantante curazoleño, falleció a los 88 años de edad.

The wonderful Barranquillero gave us unforgettable moments. That is why the Capital absorbed him and had him moved to Bogotá and due to his artistic form of interpretation, as well as an arranger and pianist, he was called by a musical organization in CURACAO and they hired him as director and pianist of BOY DAP, which, Among other things, he was a prominent singer from Curacao, he died at 88 years of age.

Durante los tiempos de oro, de BOY DAP, el famoso cantante decía: Artuz, me acompaña también, que interpreta hasta mis sentimientos y los traslada al piano-. Eso hizo, durante más de cinco años, hasta que se trasladó a Cali al intercontinental como director de orquesta.

During the golden times of BOY DAP, the famous singer said: Artuz, he accompanies me too, who interprets even my feelings and transfers them to the piano. He did that for more than five years, until he moved to Cali to the intercontinental as an orchestra director.

Su hijo, de nombre Hernando Artuz, heredo toda la sapiencia musical de su padre, que, no así su capacidad organizativa y la perseverancia, que vence los obstáculos y no permite desfallecer.
Mientras su padre fue un pianista connotado, su hijo, con arte y exquisito gusto, ejecuta la guitarra, es arreglista y compositor, además tiene muy buena voz.

His son, named Hernando Artuz, inherited all of his father’s musical wisdom, but not his organizational ability and perseverance, which overcomes obstacles and does not allow him to give up. While his father was a renowned pianist, his son, with art and exquisite taste, plays the guitar, is an arranger and composer, and also has a very good voice.

Valga la oportunidad, para decirle a NANDO hijo, en estas notas que con respeto y cariño les dedico, que cuando se tiene un padre de tan connotada, figura y resonancia, los hijos que le siguen, están obligados a no dejar caer la fama, sino por el contrario, enaltecerla como un homenaje de amor y gratitud.
