Tenerife in winter

Cualquiera de las Islas Canarias, las Islas Afortunadas son un lugar maravilloso en invierno para los que venimos del frío.  For all seasons for everybody. Pero acabo de pasar una semana en Tenerife, que entre otras cosas me ha salvado del tremendo frío que hacía en Madrid por entonces. Pasar de los 4’C a mediodía a los 21’C es un regalo del cielo. Pasar del aspecto yermo de la naturaleza invernal de centro peninsular a la exuberante variedad de flora tinerfeña, debido a su clima subtropical durante todo el año, más que un regalo, una realidad plena de belleza, deleite para la vista que impregna cuerpo y espíritu.

But I just spent a week in Tenerife, which among other things saved me from the tremendous cold that it was in Madrid at the time. Going from 4’C at noon to 21’C is a gift from heaven. Volcán Teide / Teide volcano.

He encontrado en Tenerife algunas cosas que no estaban la última vez que estuve, hace muchos años. Un teleférico que sube desde la estación base en las faldas del volcán Teide, a 2.356 metros de altitud hasta los 3.555 metros en la estación de llegada, la Rambleta. 2.482 metros de subida que cubre en ocho minutos. El volcán Teide es el pico más alto de España, que alcanza los 3.718 metros de altitud sobre el nivel del mar.

I have found some things in Tenerife that were not there the last time I was there, many years ago. A cable car that goes up from the base station on the slopes of the Teide volcano, at 2,356 meters of altitude to 3,555 meters at the arrival station, La Rambleta. 2,482 meters of ascent that it covers in eight minutes. Arriba hace frío y viento fuerte. El sol es radiante. El azul celeste completamente limpio. Las nubes están por debajo de esa altura. Afortunadamente ese día no son muchas y permiten ver, allá abajo, el majestuoso Atlántico, y desde un punto de la Rambleta,  la Isla Gran Canaria y desde sus varios puntos las Siete Cañadas del Teide y el Valle Ucanca.

Se puede hacer senderismo a varios puntos, quizá el más interesante sea la vereda que lleva a Pico Viejo, el más largo también, con vistas a las islas Gomera, El Hierro y La Palma. Aparte de esta hay otras siete opciones senderistas, la más corta,  Fortaleza, con poco más de 400 metros de camino.

Desde el Puerto de la Cruz, mi punto de partida, hasta la estación base del teleférico subimos en autobús, en guagua en lenguaje canario, adoptado en algunos territorios americanos. Una experiencia para la vista, poder visualizar en 43 kilómetros desde el nivel del mar hasta los 2.356 metros toda la variedad de la flora, desde la exuberancia subtropical de la zona costera, hasta el paisaje lunar de las Cañadas y zonas cercanas, tan ricas en minerales, aquí por ejemplo, la maravillosa obsidiana. Pasando por el valle de la Orotava, el territorio de la endémica laurisilva, los pinares víctima de un espantoso incendio, con pinos que se resisten a morir y siguen dando brotes verdes.  Pregunto a nuestra guía, Wanda, si el incendio fue espontáneo o provocado. “Provocado”, dice. “¿Se sabe quién ha sido, han sido juzgados y condenados”? “No, -responde- solo hay fundadas sospechas, incluso de trabajadores forestales del Parque Nacional del Teide, sería su forma de reivindicar mejoras laborales”.

Uno se queda sin palabras. Para los turistas alemanes que comparten la excursión debe ser algo incomprensible. En Alemania prácticamente no existe la piromanía. Es el único país de Europa en el que el área de bosque ha aumentado desde después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su sistema muy extenso de bosques comunitarios, hacen imposible esta tendencia patológica tan común en España.

Loro Parque.

Otra cosa que no estaba en mi primera visita a Tenerife. El Loro Parque, en las afueras del Puerto de la Cruz. Fue creado, ¡cómo no! por alemanes, padre e hijo, Wolfgang Kiessling e inaugurado en 1972. Por entonces su superficie era de casi 13.000 m2, contaba con unos ciento cincuenta papagayos residiendo en hábitats naturales. En la actualidad su extensión alcanza los 135.000 m2. Y ha sido reconocido por dos años consecutivos como el mejor zoológico del mundo, por su flora, fauna marina y aves principalmente, hábitats que recrean los originales naturales y sobre todo, porque es un centro de conservación y recreación de especies en peligro de extinción reconocido mundialmente. Como hito a mencionar la zona ártica creada para los pingüinos de la zona original en peligro de extinción por el cambio climático que produce calentamiento global. La sala de máquinas para reciclaje constante de las aguas de este parque ártico, es única en el mundo. O la clínica con equipamientos de última generación, que no hay en muchos hospitales, no solo de España, otro hecho a reseñar.

Se puede y se debe pasar el día en el Loro Parque. Para desplazarse a él desde el centro del Puerto de la Cruz hay un tren gratuito que parte de la plaza de los Reyes Católicos. Nada más llegar me apunto a una visita guiada, no solo orientativa, también para conocer  lugares que sin ella, seguramente no hubiera descubierto. Lugares que ya he mencionado. Y luego, el resto del día, para seguir viendo, ya con la orientación hecha. Ver todos los hábitats que se han ido incluyendo con el paso de los años, como la maravillosa “Aqua Viva”, “Animal Embassy”, espectáculos de delfines, leones marinos, orcas y loros, cada uno en su hábitat y con sus entrenadores, en horario concertado.

Más o menos, eso es Loro Parque, primer zoológico de Europa en recibir el certificado de “Humane Conservation” con la máxima calificación al mejor parque zoológico de Europa, por la American Humane Conservation Association.

Complejo Martianez de César Manrique

Las piscinas naturales  o charcos de agua de mar, separadas del océano por una barrera natural de rocas volcánicas, siempre estuvieron ahí. Hasta que llegó César Manrique, el gran artista nacido en Lanzarote,  maestro en crear y combinar arquitectura, escultura  y decoración con la naturaleza local. Así surgió el complejo Lago Martianez en el Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. Sus 100.000 metros cuadrados son Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) con categoría de Jardín Histórico desde 2005.

Pirámides de Guïmar

El Parque Etnográfico y Jardín Botánico Pirámides de Güimar obtuvo el premio a la categoría Mejor Práctica de Turismo Sostenible General 2021, concedido por Turismo de Tenerife como parte de su concurso anual de Prácticas Turísticas Sostenibles. El Jardín Sostenible fue creado en colaboración con la Universidad de La Laguna.

Y, ¿qué decir de la gastronomía? / And what can we say about gastronomy?

Paraíso para los amantes del pescado fresco, del día, hasta el punto que hay días que no se encuentra alguno porque no ha entrado ese día. (A mí me pasó con las sardinas, que adoro, y no habían entrado ese día).  En todas partes se van a encontrar las deliciosas papas arrugadas, que aliñadas con cualquier mojo picón, verde o rojo, suave o picante son una guarnición absolutamente deliciosa. He de decir que el mojo picón puede aliñar muchos otros platos con éxito asegurado. Bueno, no hace falta decir, que me he convertido en fan del mojo picón.

Paradise for lovers of fresh fish, of the day, to the point that there are days when none is found because it has not arrived that day. (It happened to me with sardines, which I adore, and they hadn’t come in that day). Everywhere you will find the delicious wrinkled potatoes, which when seasoned with any mojo picón, green or red, mild or spicy, are an absolutely delicious garnish. I have to say that mojo picón can season many other dishes with guaranteed success. Well, needless to say, I have become a fan of mojo picón.

Y también me he convertido en fan de los quesos canarios y de su presentación de queso de cabra (creo) frito y caramelizado.

No sé de donde proceden las carnes que se comen en Tenerife, si de la Península o del cercano sur de Marruecos. Carnes asadas, al estilo tinerfeño, tiernas, jugosas, deliciosas, que he visto cortar a la vista de los comensales en el restaurante del hotel donde me he alojado, el Tenerife Playa, del que brevemente diré que al rellenar la encuesta de valoración de los distintos servicios que ofrece, he puesto en todos ellos la calificación máxima, por justo merecimiento. Y ya que hablamos de gastronomía, decir que su buffet, de desayuno y cena, es en cuanto a variedad y calidad de cinco estrellas. Todo sale de las cocinas del hotel.

Roasted meats, Tenerife style, tender, juicy, delicious, which I have seen cut in full view of the diners in the restaurant of the hotel where I stayed, the Tenerife Playa, of which I will briefly say that when filling out the evaluation survey of the different services it offers, I have given all of them the maximum rating, due to just merit. And since we’re talking about gastronomy, let’s say that its breakfast and dinner buffet is five-star in terms of variety and quality. Everything comes from the hotel kitchens.

Y para final una crítica.… / And finally a criticism.

Menos mal que al hacer mi equipaje de regreso puse dentro de la maleta que facturé, ¡gracias a Dios! todos mis cosméticos. Porque si no la hubiese facturado, por tamaño y peso, me temo que hubiesen requisado todos, como pasó con lo único que puse en mi mochila de mano, dos tarros de crema facial y corporal de aloe vera canario. Uno apenas empezado, y otro sin abrir, que pensaba regalar.

Mi recomendación: Visiten Tenerife y cualquier otra de las Islas Canarias, principalmente Lanzarote y La Palma. Son un ejemplo de diversidad  microclimática, flora autóctona que las convierte en auténticos jardines botánicos naturales. Y su riqueza única en minerales, por la presencia de diversos tipos de volcanes.
